Chapter 8 - What Was Buried Beneath Calder

The answer was lithium.
Not a few scattered mineral traces.
A massive high-grade deposit beneath the eastern side of Mount Calder.
The geological report was dated 2008.
A year before the avalanche.
Estimated modern value: billions.
My father had known.
Samuel had known.
Richard Hale definitely knew.
The planned hotel expansion in 2009 had been partly a cover for geological access.
But Dad had apparently refused to let Richard turn Calder into a mining operation.
Rachel read Samuel’s notebook.
“Nathan wanted environmental review. Richard wanted extraction rights immediately.”
Grant looked at me.
“Then the avalanche delayed everything.”
“No,” Rachel said.
“It buried the access corridor.”
We looked at her.
“The workers killed in 2009 were building directly above the richest section.”
Silence.
The implications were sickening.
Richard had pushed the schedule because he needed the tunnel completed.
His premature explosive order triggered the avalanche.
Fourteen workers died because he was impatient to reach the deposit.
Afterward, public scrutiny made mining impossible.
So Richard waited.
Then Daniel married me.
My father died.
And suddenly the mountain could be acquired quietly.
I sat back.
“This was never about my shares.”
Grant shook his head.
“It was about controlling the land.”
Rachel pointed toward the reversion clause.
“And my family’s claim complicated that.”
Now Helena’s actions made more sense.
If Samuel’s heir resurfaced, ownership could revert.
Richard needed every potential claimant controlled.
Daniel was one path.
Helena another.
I wondered whether Helena even knew how deeply Richard had manipulated her.
At noon, Daniel was released pending further investigation.
The criminal evidence was serious, but prosecutors were still building the avalanche case.
Daniel called me immediately.
I ignored him.
He called again.
Then sent a message.
WE NEED TO TALK. RICHARD WILL KILL US BOTH.
I showed Grant.
“That’s encouraging,” he said.
We met Daniel inside an interview room under surveillance.
He entered without his usual confidence.
No tailored perfection.
No cameras.
No Vanessa.
“You look terrible,” I said.
He almost laughed.
“So do you.”
“Difference is, you helped cause mine.”
“Ava—”
“No speeches.”
He looked toward Grant.
“I’ll talk only to her.”
Grant remained.
Daniel understood.
“My father is alive.”
“We know.”
“He contacted me two years ago.”
“Before our wedding anniversary?”
“Yes.”
“When did you know why he wanted Calder?”
“Before I met you.”
There it was.
No more lies.
At least not that one.
“You targeted me.”
“Yes.”
The word hurt less than I expected.
“Did you ever love me?”
Daniel looked away.
“That isn’t relevant.”
“It’s the only question you seem afraid to answer.”
His jaw tightened.
“I didn’t plan to.”
“Love me?”
“Yes.”
I hated that part of me still reacted.
“So what happened on the mountain?”
“Richard told me the blast would trigger a controlled evacuation.”
“And you agreed?”
“I agreed to close the resort.”
“You gave him Martin’s access.”
Daniel said nothing.
“That’s a yes.”
“He promised nobody would be hurt.”
“And when I got hurt?”
Daniel looked at the table.
“You saw the red tag.”
“Yes.”
“You covered it.”
His voice became almost inaudible.
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because Vanessa had copies of the transfer documents. She was supposed to get off the mountain.”
I stared.
“So you chose the paperwork.”
“At first.”
“At first?”
Daniel finally looked at me.
“Then I realized if you died, Richard could no longer use you.”
I felt sick.
“That’s your defense?”
“No.”
He rubbed both hands over his face.
“I’m telling you how broken my thinking was.”
“You whispered that I wouldn’t live long enough to make things ugly.”
“I know.”
“I remember every word.”
“I know.”
For the first time, Daniel looked ashamed.
It did not change anything.
Remorse could be real and still arrive too late.
“Where is Richard holding Vanessa?”
“I don’t know.”
“He kidnapped your mistress and you don’t know?”
“He stopped answering me yesterday.”
“What does he want now?”
“The land transfer documents.”
Rachel entered.
Daniel went pale.
“You.”
“You know me?” she asked.
“I’ve seen photographs.”
“From Richard?”
“Yes.”
Rachel sat beside me.
“What happens if Calder transfers to my trust?”
“Richard believes he can force you to sell.”
“How?”
Daniel hesitated.
Then looked directly at Rachel.
“He has your father.”
Rachel stopped breathing.
“What?”
“Samuel is alive.”
Her chair scraped backward.
“You’re lying.”
“I’ve seen him.”
“Where?”
“Richard moved him constantly.”
Tears filled Rachel’s eyes.
“Why keep him alive for seventeen years?”
“Because Samuel memorized the location of the original geological core data and legal mineral claim.”
Rachel’s voice broke.
“My father has been his prisoner?”
“Not exactly.”
“What does that mean?”
Daniel closed his eyes.
“Samuel has been working with Richard.”
The room froze.
Rachel slapped him.
Grant moved, but I shook my head.
Daniel touched his cheek.
“He’s lying,” Rachel whispered.
Daniel reached into his coat slowly.
Grant’s hand moved toward his weapon.
Daniel produced a flash drive.
“Watch it.”
The video showed Richard in a warehouse.
Beside him stood Samuel Vale.
Older.
Thin.
Alive.
Not restrained.
The two men were studying Calder maps together.
Rachel made a sound I will never forget.
Then Samuel turned toward the camera.
He looked exhausted.
But free.
And he said:
“When Ava returns, the final phase begins.”
Rachel stared at the screen.
“What final phase?”
May you like
Daniel looked at me.
“The destruction of Calder Peak.”
