Chapter 14 - The Rooftop Trap

Sarno’s arrest did not immediately erase every problem.

Men like Emilio Sarno built systems.

Systems survived individuals.

Two months after New Year’s Eve, Daniel discovered someone was trying to sell copies of the Ki financial archive.

Not enough to destroy the family.

Enough to create chaos.

Octavio’s instinct was predictable.

Lock everything down.

Nomi’s instinct was equally predictable.

“No.”

They argued in her tattoo shop.

Quietly.

Which was new.

“You cannot expose yourself again,” Octavio said.

“I’m already exposed.”

“That sentence is exactly the problem.”

“You think whoever has the copies doesn’t know I’m connected?”

“I think we can minimize risk.”

“By hiding me.”

“By protecting you.”

“Same argument. New month.”

Octavio exhaled.

Nomi softened.

“You promised.”

“I promised not to control you. I did not promise to enjoy your decisions.”

“That is fair.”

He blinked.

“You’re agreeing?”

“Don’t become emotional.”

His mouth moved.

The seller wanted to meet on a rooftop.

The same rooftop where Octavio and Nomi met.

That detail made Nomi suspicious.

“This isn’t about selling documents.”

Octavio agreed.

“It’s about us.”

Exactly.

Someone wanted to exploit the location’s emotional importance.

Which meant someone had been watching after Sarno’s arrest.

Nomi volunteered to appear.

Octavio hated it.

They built the plan together.

That distinction mattered.

The meeting occurred at 11:00 p.m.

Nomi wore black.

Not because of strategy.

Because Valentina had finally forced her to buy the sparkling black dress she claimed Nomi “owed the universe.”

Octavio saw her before the operation and forgot his sentence.

Nomi smiled.

“What?”

“Nothing.”

“You stopped talking.”

“I’m aware.”

“Observation: successful.”

His eyes traveled over the dress, then returned immediately to her face.

“Cancel the meeting.”

Nomi laughed.

“Why?”

“I’ve reconsidered everything.”

“You’re ridiculous.”

“Yes.”

For one brief moment, danger disappeared.

They were simply a man and woman looking at each other.

Then Daniel spoke through the earpiece.

“Focus.”

Nomi covered her microphone.

“He really did help you practice romance, didn’t he?”

Octavio looked offended.

The rooftop was decorated for a private charity celebration.

Music.

Candles.

Guests downstairs.

Fireworks scheduled later for a winter festival.

The setting resembled New Year’s Eve enough to feel unreal.

Nomi stood near the bar holding champagne she had no intention of drinking.

Octavio approached from behind.

Part of the cover.

Anyone watching needed to believe they were distracted.

He stopped close.

“Cancel your plans.”

Nomi looked up.

“Again?”

“It worked the first time.”

“You didn’t actually say it that dramatically the first time.”

“I’m improving the memory.”

She smiled.

“Revisionist romance.”

His hand settled gently at her waist.

Exactly as agreed.

But the look in his eyes was not acting.

Nomi’s breath caught.

“Octavio.”

“Yes?”

“We’re supposed to look distracted.”

“I am.”

“Inconvenient.”

“Extremely.”

Fireworks exploded behind the skyline.

For a second, the world looked like the imagined drawing she had made before any of this happened.

Then Daniel’s voice entered her earpiece.

“Target approaching.”

Nomi shifted.

A woman walked across the rooftop.

Nomi recognized her.

Elena Vey.

Malcolm’s sister.

She carried a small black drive.

“Unexpected,” Nomi whispered.

Elena stopped.

“I’m not here to hurt you.”

“Then why the theatrics?”

“Because people are still listening.”

She looked at Octavio.

“The copies aren’t mine.”

“Whose?”

“Vincent’s attorney.”

Octavio’s expression hardened.

“He kept insurance.”

“Before surrendering.”

Nomi asked, “Why bring it to us?”

Elena looked exhausted.

“Because I’m tired of men using information to control people.”

Nomi understood immediately.

“Where is the attorney?”

“Watching.”

“From where?”

Elena glanced toward the building across the street.

Nomi followed her eyes.

A camera lens.

There.

Octavio saw it.

Daniel’s team moved.

Within minutes, the attorney was detained.

No dramatic violence.

No rooftop battle.

Just evidence.

Records.

An extortion attempt.

The final loose thread from Vincent’s old decisions.

Elena handed Nomi the drive.

“You were right.”

“About?”

“Invisible people see everything.”

Nomi stared.

“How do you know I say that?”

“Malcolm talked about you.”

Nomi’s expression softened.

“How is he?”

“Trying to rebuild.”

“His son?”

“Safe.”

Good.

That mattered.

After Elena left with investigators, Nomi remained by the rooftop bar.

Octavio approached.

“Finished?”

“Almost.”

He stood behind her.

Fireworks spread gold across the city.

Nomi looked up at him.

“This feels familiar.”

“Less helicopter.”

“Better dress.”

“Much better dress.”

She narrowed her eyes.

“Careful.”

Octavio leaned closer.

“Bambina mia.”

Nomi smiled.

“What?”

“I love you.”

The words were so simple she almost missed their weight.

He did not make a speech.

Did not demand an answer.

Did not frame it as something she owed.

He simply said it.

Nomi stared.

Octavio waited.

Her throat tightened.

“You practiced that with Daniel?”

“No.”

“Good.”

She turned fully toward him.

“I love you too.”

For once, Octavio Ki looked genuinely stunned.

Nomi laughed.

“You knew.”

“I suspected.”

“You control half the city and somehow need confirmation?”

“With you, yes.”

She touched his face.

“Good.”

Then she kissed him beneath fireworks that were no longer imagined.

Across the rooftop, Valentina secretly took a photograph.

She would later deny it.

Poorly.

And in that photograph, Nomi Marino did not look invisible.

May you like

She looked exactly where she had chosen to be.
