Chapter 17 - What the Creek Remembered

Years passed.

Dry Creek grew.

The railroad brought businesses.

The old saloon became a hotel.

Sheriff Burke retired, though he continued interfering in everyone’s affairs.

Daniel grew into a strong young man.

Naelli established a small school near Cottonwood Creek where children learned reading, arithmetic, local history, and practical knowledge of the land.

She insisted history include everyone.

Not only victories.

Not only tragedies.

Truth.

One afternoon Daniel found Elias beneath the old cottonwood.

“What are you doing?”

“Thinking.”

“That sounds dangerous.”

Elias looked at him.

“You've been spending too much time with Naelli.”

Daniel sat.

“Was this really where you met?”

“Yeah.”

“How old?”

“Eleven.”

“And you remembered her for thirty years?”

Elias looked at the creek.

“Some people leave your life without leaving you.”

Daniel absorbed that.

“Were you angry?”

“For a long time.”

“At who?”

“Everybody.”

“Did it help?”

“No.”

Daniel nodded.

Then asked, “What did?”

Elias looked toward the schoolhouse where Naelli was laughing with children.

“That.”

Forgiveness had not erased history.

Justice had not restored the dead.

Love had not made suffering meaningful.

But together, they had prevented pain from becoming the only thing their lives contained.

May you like

That mattered.
