Chapter 6 - Elena’s Last Secret

Anton arrived before dawn.

By then, Victor had already opened a safe he hadn't touched in eleven years.

Inside were Elena's possessions.

Letters.

Photographs.

A violin bow.

Medical documents.

Aaliyah stood several feet away as Victor removed them.

His hands trembled.

She had never seen that before.

“What are we looking for?”

“A photograph.”

Victor searched through an album.

Then stopped.

Aaliyah saw his face.

“What?”

He handed her the photograph.

Two young women stood together outside a concert hall in Moscow.

One was Elena.

Aaliyah recognized her immediately from pictures in Victor's home.

The other woman looked almost exactly like Aaliyah.

Same eyes.

Same mouth.

Same cheekbones.

Aaliyah whispered:

“Who is she?”

Victor sat.

“Elena's younger sister.”

Aaliyah's heart began pounding.

“What was her name?”

“Danielle.”

Silence.

“No.”

Aaliyah shook her head.

“My grandmother—”

“Danielle changed her surname after leaving Russia.”

“No.”

Anton entered behind them.

When he saw the photograph, he stopped.

“You knew,” Victor said.

Anton closed his eyes.

“Yes.”

Aaliyah turned.

“Tell me.”

Anton looked at her.

“Danielle was Elena's half sister.”

Aaliyah struggled to breathe.

Victor looked equally shaken.

He had known Elena's sister briefly, but Danielle had disappeared years before Elena became sick.

“What does that make me?”

Aaliyah asked.

Victor answered quietly.

“Elena's niece.”

The room seemed to tilt.

Aaliyah sat.

The handkerchief.

The embroidered E.

Victor had given her something belonging to her aunt without either of them knowing.

Tears filled Aaliyah's eyes.

“Did Elena know about me?”

Anton nodded.

Victor stood.

“What?”

“Elena knew Danielle had a daughter.”

Victor's voice sharpened.

“She never told me.”

“She tried.”

Anton removed an envelope from inside his coat.

“I've kept this for twelve years.”

Victor stared at it.

Elena's handwriting covered the front.

For Victor. When he is ready to live again.

Victor didn't move.

Aaliyah looked at Anton.

“Why didn't you give him this?”

“Elena asked me not to.”

Victor's anger rose.

“You had no right.”

“She believed you'd open it while grief still controlled you.”

“It's been twelve years.”

“I know.”

“Then why now?”

Anton looked at Aaliyah.

“Because the condition Elena gave me has finally happened.”

Victor's expression changed.

“What condition?”

Anton answered:

“She told me to give you the letter if you ever allowed someone into your life again.”

Nobody spoke.

Victor took the envelope.

His fingers trembled as he opened it.

He read silently at first.

Then stopped.

Aaliyah touched his arm.

“What does it say?”

Victor couldn't answer.

He handed her the letter.

Elena had written it shortly before dying.

My Victor,

If you're reading this, then Anton believes you've finally done the one thing I was most afraid you would never do. You have let somebody matter to you again.

Victor looked away.

Aaliyah continued.

Elena begged him not to make grief his identity.

She told him love after her would not betray her.

Then came Danielle.

My sister has a daughter named Aaliyah. Danielle believes disappearing is the only way to protect her. I disagree, but she is frightened, and frightened people sometimes mistake distance for safety.

Aaliyah began crying.

The next lines destroyed Victor.

If you ever meet that little girl, don't protect her by controlling her. You do that when you're afraid. Listen to her instead. Let her choose.

Aaliyah looked at Victor.

Neither spoke.

Elena had described his greatest flaw twelve years before Aaliyah ever encountered it.

There was more.

Danielle had become involved with Mikhail briefly, but Aaliyah was not his daughter.

Her biological father was an ordinary American graduate student named Daniel Carter who had died in a car accident before Aaliyah was born.

Danielle had fabricated the Mikhail story later because she believed a false dangerous identity would keep people from searching for the mundane truth.

Mikhail eventually discovered the deception.

And he turned it into leverage.

“So there is no inheritance,” Aaliyah said.

“No,” Anton answered.

“No criminal empire waiting for me?”

“No.”

Aaliyah released a shaky laugh.

“Best news I've heard all week.”

Victor almost smiled.

But the danger remained.

Mikhail's plan had been psychological.

He wanted Victor attached to Aaliyah.

Then he wanted Victor frightened enough to return fully to the ruthless world Elena had persuaded him to leave.

Mikhail expected fear to transform Victor back into the man he had once been.

Victor looked at Aaliyah.

“He nearly succeeded.”

“No.”

“He did.”

Victor walked toward the windows.

“The moment I thought you were threatened, I began making calls. Reopening relationships. Preparing things I promised Elena I had finished with.”

Aaliyah joined him.

“But you stopped.”

“Because of you.”

“No.”

Victor looked at her.

“You stopped because you chose to.”

That distinction mattered.

Aaliyah took his hand.

“You don't need to become your old self to protect me.”

“I know.”

“So what happens?”

Victor looked toward Nikolai.

For the first time, his answer wasn't violent.

“We give everything to federal investigators.”

Anton stared.

“Everything?”

“Everything involving Mikhail.”

“That will expose parts of your past.”

“Yes.”

“You could lose businesses.”

“Yes.”

“Money.”

“Yes.”

Victor looked at Aaliyah.

“I've already spent twelve years learning money cannot save the things that matter.”

Within forty-eight hours, attorneys delivered years of evidence to investigators.

Shell companies.

Financial transfers.

Records.

Marcus resurfaced and agreed to cooperate.

Mikhail's network began collapsing not through revenge, but evidence.

Victor accepted that some of his own history would be examined too.

For once, control wasn't the goal.

Truth was.

Three weeks later, Aaliyah completed her final clinical assessment.

When she walked out of the hospital, Victor waited across the street.

No convoy.

No security surrounding him.

Just Victor.

Holding flowers.

Aaliyah laughed.

“Flowers?”

“Nikolai said they were appropriate.”

“Nikolai chose them?”

“I chose them.”

“I'm impressed.”

Victor kissed her forehead.

“Congratulations, Nurse Carter.”

“Not officially yet.”

“You passed.”

“How do you know?”

Victor went still.

Aaliyah narrowed her eyes.

“You investigated?”

“No.”

“Victor.”

“Your professor called.”

“My professor has your number?”

Victor looked guilty.

Aaliyah laughed.

“You're impossible.”

“I'm improving.”

Then Nikolai approached.

His expression erased their smiles.

“Victor.”

He handed him a phone.

Breaking news filled the screen.

Authorities had detained several members of Mikhail's organization.

But Mikhail wasn't among them.

Victor looked up.

“He's gone.”

Nikolai nodded.

Aaliyah felt Victor's hand tighten around hers.

Then she remembered Elena's words.

Don't protect her by controlling her.

Victor looked at Aaliyah.

And instead of ordering her somewhere safe, he asked:

“What do you want to do?”

Aaliyah squeezed his hand.

“Go home.”

Victor nodded.

Together, they did.

But that evening, a package appeared outside Victor's penthouse.

No return address.

Inside was a single object.

A photograph of Victor and Aaliyah kissing beside the Charles River.

Written across the back were five words:

You were never the target.

Below them:

May you like

Victor was.
