Chapter 5 - I Heard You

By afternoon, the news that Adrian Vale had awakened had reached every financial newsroom in the country.

Vale Meridian stock jumped eight percent.

Reporters gathered outside St. Catherine.

Three black SUVs appeared at the hospital entrance.

Two attorneys arrived.

So did Grant Mercer.

Marcus refused to let him upstairs.

Inside Room 814, none of that mattered.

Adrian was learning how to drink water again.

His first attempt at speaking produced a whisper so rough Claire started crying.

His second produced one word.

"Water."

Dr. Reeves laughed.

"Best thing I've heard all month."

Adrian didn't laugh.

He drank.

Rested.

Then looked around the room.

Claire sat on his left.

Marcus stood near the window.

Dr. Reeves and another physician reviewed his monitors.

Rosie sat near Lena drawing something on a hospital notepad.

The little girl had become unexpectedly calm around Adrian.

Children, Lena thought, understood less about reputation and more about presence.

To Rosie, Adrian wasn't a billionaire.

He was simply the giant sleeping man Mama talked to at work.

When Adrian woke fully again, Rosie approached the bed.

"You look less dead today."

Lena's face went white.

"Rosie!"

Adrian stared at the child.

Then, unbelievably, the corner of his mouth moved.

Almost a smile.

Rosie grinned.

"See? He's funny."

Adrian looked at Lena.

His gaze stayed there.

Lena felt suddenly self-conscious.

For two weeks she had talked to this man as though he were furniture with a heartbeat.

She had told him about rent.

Daniel.

Rosie.

Her mother's funeral.

A disastrous date she'd gone on three years earlier.

She had once spent ten minutes complaining about the price of laundry detergent.

If he had actually heard all of that—

She wanted the floor to open.

Claire noticed the look between them.

"You know her."

Adrian blinked slowly.

"Yes."

The word was faint.

But unmistakable.

Everyone became still.

Claire looked at Lena.

"How?"

Lena swallowed.

"I cleaned his room."

Adrian's eyes closed briefly.

Then opened.

"Talked."

Lena's stomach dropped.

Rosie gasped.

"You heard Mama?"

Dr. Reeves stepped closer.

"Adrian, don't strain yourself."

But Adrian looked almost annoyed.

It was the first glimpse Lena had seen of the man everyone had described.

A man accustomed to being obeyed.

He lifted one hand.

Dr. Reeves stopped.

Adrian's eyes moved to Lena again.

She stepped closer without knowing why.

He reached toward her.

His hand trembled badly.

Lena caught it.

His fingers closed around hers.

The room became silent.

The doctors.

Claire.

Marcus.

The suited security men outside the open door.

Everyone seemed to understand that something private was happening in a room full of witnesses.

Adrian swallowed.

His voice was weak but controlled.

"Lena... I heard you."

Her throat tightened.

"You heard me?"

He nodded once.

Tears filled her eyes before she could stop them.

"Oh, God."

A faint smile touched Adrian's mouth.

"Shoes."

Lena covered her face with her free hand.

"No."

Rosie jumped from the chair.

"The cereal!"

Adrian's expression softened.

"Cereal."

Claire laughed through tears.

Marcus stared at the ceiling as if determined not to become emotional.

Lena shook her head.

"Please tell me you didn't hear everything."

Adrian looked at her.

The humor vanished.

"Everything."

One word.

But its meaning shifted the room.

Marcus straightened.

Dr. Reeves noticed.

Claire noticed too.

"What do you mean?" she asked.

Adrian's eyes moved toward the door.

"Grant."

Marcus stepped closer.

"What about Grant?"

Adrian tried to speak quickly and coughed.

Dr. Reeves intervened.

"Enough. He needs rest."

Adrian shook his head.

"Important."

"Tomorrow."

"Now."

Dr. Reeves looked like he wanted to argue.

Then he saw Adrian's expression and surrendered.

"Five minutes."

Marcus closed the door.

Claire moved nearer.

Lena tried to release Adrian's hand.

He didn't let go.

His gaze shifted briefly toward her.

"Stay."

So Lena stayed.

Adrian drew a slow breath.

"Grant... came here."

Marcus nodded.

"Many times."

"He talked."

Claire leaned forward.

"About what?"

Adrian closed his eyes, concentrating.

"Transfer."

Lena's skin prickled.

She had heard the same word.

"Shares."

Marcus exchanged a look with Claire.

Adrian continued.

"Documents."

"What documents?" Claire asked.

"Trust."

Claire went pale.

Marcus said quietly, "The restructuring?"

Adrian nodded.

Grant had apparently believed Adrian's new corporate documents had never been completed.

But Adrian knew otherwise.

"Signed," he whispered.

"Where?" Marcus asked.

Adrian's brow furrowed.

"Not office."

He looked frustrated.

Memory was there, but his body could not keep pace.

Claire touched his shoulder.

"You don't need to do this now."

Adrian ignored her.

"Elena."

Marcus frowned.

"Elena Park? Your attorney?"

Adrian nodded.

"Copy."

Marcus pulled out his phone.

"I'll call her."

Adrian squeezed Lena's hand.

Then his eyes shifted toward her.

"Other thing."

Lena felt dread.

"What?"

"You heard."

She knew immediately.

The phone call.

The transfer.

The forged electronic signature.

The payments to the car service company.

"I heard pieces."

Marcus's jaw tightened.

"Tell us."

Lena looked toward Rosie.

Claire understood.

"Sweetheart, want to show me your drawing outside?"

Rosie shook her head.

"No."

Lena almost smiled.

"Please."

Rosie reluctantly gave Claire her hand.

When they left, Lena told Marcus everything.

Grant saying the emergency authority expired Monday.

Grant saying it would not matter whether Adrian woke.

The phone call about the transfer.

The message threatening her.

The photograph of Rosie.

Adrian's expression grew colder with every sentence.

When Lena finished, Marcus said, "We already turned the messages over to police."

Adrian's eyes hardened.

"Police?"

"Detective Shaw is handling it."

"Good."

Then Adrian whispered something Lena couldn't hear.

"What?"

He tried again.

"Car."

Marcus's face changed.

"Do you remember the crash?"

Adrian closed his eyes.

For several seconds, nobody moved.

Then he nodded.

"Brakes."

Marcus looked toward Lena.

"We suspected."

Adrian's next words took visible effort.

"Weren't... failing."

His hand tightened around Lena's.

"Cut."

Silence.

Lena felt cold.

Marcus's voice became almost inaudible.

"You knew before impact?"

Adrian nodded.

"A warning came on?"

"No."

"Then how?"

Adrian stared at him.

"Grant told me."

Nobody breathed.

"What did he tell you?" Marcus asked.

"Before meeting."

Adrian closed his eyes.

"He said... car should be replaced."

Marcus frowned.

"That's not proof."

"No."

Adrian opened his eyes.

"But he knew."

A knock came.

Marcus opened the door.

One of his security officers whispered in his ear.

Marcus turned.

"Grant's attorney is downstairs with a court petition."

Claire had returned and heard him.

"For what?"

"To temporarily suspend Adrian's voting authority pending cognitive evaluation."

Adrian's jaw flexed.

Marcus almost smiled.

"He doesn't know you're talking."

"Keep it that way," Claire said.

Adrian looked at Marcus.

For the first time, the powerful man Lena had heard about appeared fully behind his tired eyes.

"Let him."

Marcus understood immediately.

"Let him think you're impaired?"

Adrian nodded.

Lena looked between them.

"What are you doing?"

Adrian turned toward her.

His voice was barely more than air.

"Listening."

The word landed with strange perfection.

For two weeks, Adrian had been trapped inside his own body while everyone else revealed themselves around him.

Now the people who thought he remembered nothing were about to discover that silence had been listening back.

Late that evening, after everyone left except Lena, Adrian slept.

She sat beside him.

For once, she had nothing to say.

At 2:06 a.m., his eyes opened.

"Can't sleep?" Lena asked.

A tiny shake of his head.

She smiled.

"Welcome to night shift."

His gaze settled on her.

"Daniel."

Lena's smile faded.

"What about him?"

"Left."

"Yes."

Adrian was quiet for a long moment.

Then he whispered, "Coward."

Lena laughed unexpectedly.

"That's medically inappropriate."

He almost smiled.

Then his eyes became serious.

"I heard... all of it."

Her throat tightened.

"You weren't supposed to."

"I know."

"That's embarrassing."

"No."

His thumb moved weakly across her knuckles.

"Kept me here."

Lena stared at him.

"What?"

He swallowed.

"Your voice."

She stopped breathing.

Adrian's eyes began to close again.

But before sleep took him, he whispered four words that frightened Lena more than all the threats Grant had sent.

May you like

"Grant heard you too."
