Chapter 7 - Someone Was Watching

Ethan had known Adrian Vale for fifteen years.
They met at Wharton.
Built their first small investment partnership at twenty-five.
Survived a failed deal together.
When Ethan formed Cole International, Adrian became one of the first people through the door.
He was not merely an employee.
He was family.
At least Ethan had believed he was.
“No.”
The word came quietly.
Gabriel understood.
“I checked the timestamp three times.”
“Could he have had a legitimate reason to be there?”
“At two seventeen in the morning?”
“He had access.”
“So did three other executives.”
Ethan looked at the grainy image.
Adrian was younger.
Hair longer.
But unmistakable.
Claire watched him absorb the betrayal.
“Did he know about us?”
“Yes.”
“How much?”
“Everything.”
That answer frightened her.
Adrian had known Claire planned to spend that night at Ethan's apartment.
He knew the private elevator codes.
He knew Ethan's travel schedule.
He had access to internal financing files.
“Could he have given my father the documents?”
Gabriel answered.
“Possible.”
Ethan's jaw tightened.
“Don't approach him.”
“I wasn't planning to.”
“We watch.”
Claire expected Ethan to confront Adrian immediately.
Four years earlier, he might have.
Fatherhood had altered his instincts.
Now information mattered more than emotional satisfaction.
On Monday, Ethan returned to New York for twenty-four hours.
He hated leaving Noah.
Noah hated it too.
“You're coming back?”
“Yes.”
“When?”
“Tomorrow night.”
“Promise?”
Ethan crouched.
“I promise.”
Noah held out his little finger.
Ethan looked at it.
“What is this?”
“Pinky promise.”
“I don't remember agreeing to this contractual system.”
Noah hooked his finger around Ethan's anyway.
“Now you did.”
Ethan smiled.
“Tomorrow.”
On the flight to Manhattan, Gabriel briefed him.
Adrian had been communicating with Martin Hale through encrypted accounts.
Not constantly.
Once or twice a year.
The most recent exchange occurred three weeks earlier.
Right before Rourke began watching Claire.
“Why now?” Ethan asked.
“Could be the Hartwell anniversary audit.”
“Or something triggered them.”
“What?”
“Maybe Victor learned Claire planned to contact me.”
“Was she?”
Ethan didn't know.
He thought of their conversation.
He intended to ask.
At Cole International headquarters, Adrian greeted Ethan with a grin.
“Finally.”
He hugged him.
Ethan returned the gesture.
It took everything he had not to reveal what he knew.
“I hear Maine has you hostage.”
“Weather delay.”
“For four days?”
Ethan shrugged.
“I liked the coffee.”
Adrian laughed.
“Who was she?”
“What?”
“The woman in the photographs.”
Ethan watched him.
Too casual.
Claire's identity was public now.
Adrian knew exactly who she was.
“You don't read tabloids?”
“Trying to pretend I have standards.”
Ethan smiled.
“Claire.”
Adrian performed surprise beautifully.
“Whitmore?”
“Yes.”
“After four years?”
“Yes.”
Adrian shook his head.
“That's insane.”
“You have no idea.”
They walked into the boardroom.
For the next two hours Ethan behaved normally.
He reviewed quarterly results.
Questioned forecasts.
Rejected an acquisition proposal.
Adrian presented revenue projections.
No one watching would have known Ethan suspected the man beside him had helped destroy four years of his life.
After the meeting, Adrian poured two drinks.
“To women who return from the dead.”
Ethan did not touch his.
“Funny phrase.”
“What?”
“Return from the dead.”
Adrian smiled.
“Figure of speech.”
Ethan watched him.
“Martin Hale returned too.”
The glass paused halfway to Adrian's mouth.
Less than a second.
But Ethan saw.
“Who?”
“Victor's attorney.”
“The one who drowned?”
“Apparently not.”
Adrian recovered.
“That's bizarre.”
“Very.”
“Where is he?”
“Don't know.”
Ethan took the glass from the desk and set it aside.
“But I'll find him.”
Their eyes met.
A quiet contest began.
Adrian smiled first.
“If anyone can.”
Ethan left.
Gabriel was waiting downstairs.
“He reacted.”
“I saw.”
“You want him followed?”
“Already should be.”
“He is.”
Ethan glanced at him.
“Good.”
The trap worked faster than expected.
Adrian left the office at six.
Instead of going home, he drove to an underground garage in Tribeca.
A second car entered twelve minutes later.
Martin Hale stepped out.
Gabriel's surveillance team photographed everything.
No audio.
But Adrian appeared angry.
Hale calm.
Then Hale handed him an envelope.
Adrian burned it later in his fireplace.
He didn't know a camera lens watched from a building across the street.
Back in Maine, Claire took Noah to preschool.
Security followed.
At noon, Mrs. Palmer covered the café so Claire could buy groceries.
She noticed a man near the produce aisle.
Baseball cap.
Gray jacket.
He kept appearing behind her.
Claire changed aisles.
So did he.
Her heart began racing.
She texted Gabriel's local officer.
Blue Harbor Market. Someone following.
A response came instantly.
Stay inside. Team entering.
Claire reached the checkout.
The man disappeared.
Security searched.
Gone.
When Claire returned to her car, an envelope sat beneath the windshield wiper.
She did not touch it.
Gabriel's team photographed and bagged it.
Inside was a photocopy of Noah's birth certificate.
Father line blank.
And a handwritten sentence:
ETHAN CANNOT PROTECT A CHILD WHO DOES NOT LEGALLY BELONG TO HIM.
Claire's hands went cold.
That night she called Ethan.
He answered before the first ring finished.
“Are you okay?”
“How did you know?”
“Gabriel called.”
“Someone followed me.”
“I know.”
“I want Noah out of here.”
Ethan was already standing.
“Where?”
“I don't care. Somewhere nobody knows.”
“Come to New York.”
“No.”
“Claire.”
“My father controls half the people I grew up with.”
“He doesn't control me.”
She heard what he meant.
Come where he could protect them.
Come into his world.
The exact world she had spent four years avoiding.
“What about Noah's school?”
“We find another temporarily.”
“The café?”
“Mrs. Palmer can close it.”
“My life is here.”
“I know.”
His voice softened.
“But right now, keeping that life may require leaving it for a little while.”
Claire closed her eyes.
“Where would we stay?”
“My house in Westchester.”
“Your fortress?”
“You called it that once.”
“Because it looks like a Bond villain designed a country club.”
“You'll be safe.”
Noah wandered into the kitchen rubbing his eyes.
“Mom?”
Claire looked at him.
Decision made.
“We'll come.”
Ethan exhaled.
“I'll send a car in the morning.”
“No helicopter.”
“I wasn't going to—”
“Ethan.”
“Fine.”
She almost smiled.
Then Noah tugged her sleeve.
“Is that Dad?”
The word crossed the phone.
Ethan went silent.
Claire handed Noah the device.
“Hi.”
“Hey, buddy.”
“Mom says we're going somewhere.”
“You're coming to stay with me.”
“Do you have dinosaurs?”
“I can arrange—”
“No.”
Claire took the phone.
“No purchasing dinosaurs.”
Noah giggled.
Ethan laughed.
For a few seconds, fear loosened its grip.
Then Gabriel called Ethan on another line.
Urgent.
Ethan switched.
“We intercepted Adrian leaving another meeting.”
“With Hale?”
“No.”
“Who?”
Gabriel sent the photograph.
Ethan opened it.
Victor Whitmore stood beside Adrian Vale inside a private Manhattan club.
They were shaking hands.
But the image contained one more detail.
A folder beneath Victor's arm.
The logo printed on its corner belonged to Cole International.
And beneath that logo was the name of Ethan's newest confidential acquisition.
A transaction only six people knew existed.
Adrian was not merely connected to the betrayal four years ago.
May you like
He was still betraying Ethan now.
