Chapter 7 - The Friend Who Lied

Natalie had told me she did not know where the original ledger was.
At 2:16 in the morning, I watched her pick it up from my patio.
I called Rebecca.
Then Michael.
Then I did absolutely nothing reckless.
I stayed where I was.
The cameras recorded Natalie entering.
They recorded her leaving.
And the next morning, when Natalie called me, I answered normally.
“Morning.”
“Claire, are you okay?”
“Yes.”
“Have you heard from Ryan?”
“No.”
A lie for a lie.
“Why?”
“No reason.”
I stared at the paused image of her holding the ledger.
“Natalie?”
“Yes?”
“Where were you last night?”
Silence.
Then she disconnected.
Ten minutes later, she called back.
“Can we meet?”
“At Rebecca's office.”
“No lawyers.”
“Then no meeting.”
Another pause.
“Fine.”
Natalie arrived at noon carrying the ledger.
She placed it on Rebecca's table.
“I was going to bring it here.”
“Why didn't you call me?”
“Because I panicked.”
“Why were you at my house?”
“Ryan contacted me.”
That surprised me.
“When?”
“Yesterday.”
“What did he want?”
“He said he was leaving something that could destroy all of us.”
“All?”
She nodded.
“Me. Mason. Diane. You.”
“What about him?”
A bitter smile.
“He thinks he's already destroyed.”
Rebecca asked, “Why did you retrieve it?”
“Because there's a page in there with my signature.”
“The February transfer?”
“Yes.”
“You already admitted that.”
“Not that one.”
Natalie opened the ledger.
Near the middle was a folded document.
She removed it.
I read the heading.
Consulting Compensation Agreement.
Natalie had received $120,000 from Northbridge.
I looked at her.
“You said Ryan offered you money and you refused.”
“He offered me money when I left.”
“This was earlier.”
“Yes.”
“What was it for?”
“I thought it was a performance bonus.”
“You didn't question why a shell company paid it?”
“I didn't know Northbridge was a shell then.”
Maybe true.
Maybe not.
But the days of trusting people because I liked them were over.
Rebecca copied the document.
Then we examined the ledger.
It was devastating.
Payments matched transfers.
Initials matched entities.
Dates corresponded with meetings captured on my cameras.
But one section made no sense.
Repeated payments labeled C.B.
My initials.
Claire Bennett.
$90,000.
$140,000.
$275,000.
Natalie stared at me.
“Did you receive these?”
“No.”
“Then somebody wanted it to look like you did.”
We traced one account.
The beneficiary was a company called CB Innovations.
Registered two years earlier.
I had never heard of it.
The registration included my name.
My old email address.
And a signature that looked almost perfect.
Ryan had not only been removing money.
Someone had apparently created a trail pointing toward me.
If investigators discovered it without context, I could look involved.
That was why Ryan had written:
YOU’RE NOT AS INNOCENT AS YOU THINK.
He had built an escape route.
And I was standing at the end of it.
Rebecca immediately contacted the appropriate investigators and turned over the ledger.
Transparency was our protection.
By afternoon, forensic accountants were tracing CB Innovations.
The registered mailing address led to a private mailbox.
The account had received more than $1.1 million.
Most of it had then been transferred elsewhere.
“To where?” I asked.
Rebecca looked at the report.
“A brokerage account.”
“Whose?”
“We don't know yet.”
That evening, Ryan finally surrendered himself to face questions related to the barbecue incident under the applicable process.
His attorney released a statement denying broader wrongdoing and saying financial allegations would be addressed through proper channels.
I did not respond publicly.
Instead, I sat at Elena's kitchen table eating soup.
For the first time in days, the world became quiet.
Elena sat across from me.
“What happens if you get Bennett back?”
I stared into my bowl.
“I don't know.”
“You want it?”
That question should have been easy.
It wasn't.
I had spent years resenting Ryan for taking the company from me.
But did I actually want to return?
“I want what happened acknowledged.”
“That isn't the same thing.”
“No.”
“What do you want after that?”
Nobody had asked me.
Not Ryan.
Not Rebecca.
Not reporters.
Not even me.
“I want my life back.”
Elena smiled.
“Which one?”
I looked at her.
“The old one or the next one?”
That stayed with me.
Because revenge had begun to feel like another way of letting Ryan control my future.
If every decision I made was about defeating him, then he was still at the center.
I did not want Ryan at the center anymore.
But before I could decide what came next, Rebecca called.
“We identified the brokerage account.”
“And?”
“It belongs to a trust.”
“Diane?”
“No.”
“Mason?”
“No.”
“Who?”
She hesitated.
“The beneficiary is listed as Claire Bennett.”
My stomach dropped.
“That's impossible.”
“I know.”
“Who created the trust?”
“We're working on that.”
I stood.
Then Rebecca added, “There's more. Someone accessed it yesterday.”
“Who?”
“We don't know yet.”
“How much?”
“Almost the entire balance.”
“Transferred where?”
“An overseas account.”
My name was attached to millions I had never touched.
And somebody was moving the money while Ryan's world collapsed.
That meant this was not merely old evidence.
Someone was still operating the scheme.
Ryan was under scrutiny.
Diane was being watched.
Mason had turned over records.
Natalie was sitting beside us.
So who was left?
The answer arrived the following morning.
A Bennett employee named Laura Chen called Rebecca.
Laura had served as Ryan's executive assistant for four years.
“I need to speak to Claire,” she said.
We met her privately.
Laura looked terrified.
“I know who created CB Innovations.”
My heart hammered.
“Who?”
She slid a photograph across the table.
It showed Ryan standing outside a bank.
Beside him was a man I recognized immediately.
Someone who had attended our anniversary barbecue.
Someone who had watched Ryan hurt me.
Someone who had stood in the background and said nothing.
The chairman of Bennett Home Systems.
Thomas Caldwell.
Laura looked at me.
“Ryan wasn't stealing from the company behind the board's back.”
She swallowed.
May you like
“He was doing it with the chairman.”
