Chapter 8 - The Secret Inside Gallagher Freight

Three days later, federal agents entered Gallagher Freight.
They arrived at 8:12 in the morning with warrants.
Ruby watched six dark jackets cross the operations floor.
Every employee stopped working.
The lead investigator introduced herself.
“Special Agent Elena Price.”
Ruby shook her hand.
“What is this regarding?”
“Historical shipping irregularities.”
Ruby’s stomach dropped.
Salvi.
Of course.
“What years?”
“Primarily the last eighteen months.”
Ruby looked toward her father’s empty office.
“How can I help?”
Agent Price seemed surprised.
“Your attorney may want you to reconsider that question.”
“My attorney will be here in twenty minutes.”
Ruby had called Gideon’s lawyer the second she saw federal vehicles.
Not Gideon.
That mattered too.
Agent Price handed her the warrant.
They wanted manifests.
Container records.
Port access logs.
Payment histories.
Ruby recognized several route numbers.
The compromised shipments.
Her father’s secret.
Ruby spent the morning walking investigators through systems.
Her lawyer arrived.
Then accountants.
Then Marcus.
Employees whispered.
By lunch, local news vans appeared outside.
The first headline hit at 12:07.
GALLAGHER FREIGHT RAIDED IN POSSIBLE PORT SMUGGLING INVESTIGATION.
Ruby stared at her phone.
The company she had saved for years was being publicly associated with crime.
Customers began calling.
Three suspended shipments.
One canceled a contract.
Another demanded an audit.
Ruby stood in the conference room while everything she loved started breaking again.
At 12:19, Gideon called.
She answered this time.
“Are you safe?”
“Yes.”
“Price is good.”
“You know her?”
“She investigated one of my competitors.”
“That doesn’t comfort me.”
“It wasn’t intended to.”
Ruby looked through the glass wall at federal agents boxing records.
“Did Salvi do this?”
“Almost certainly.”
“Can you prove it?”
“Not yet.”
“Then don’t touch him.”
Silence.
“Gideon.”
“I heard you.”
“That is not agreement.”
“It’s the closest you’re getting.”
Ruby almost smiled.
Then her voice softened.
“They found the old routes.”
“I know.”
“Customers are leaving.”
“I know.”
“If this becomes criminal—”
“It won’t.”
“How can you know?”
“Because you stopped the shipments four months ago.”
Ruby froze.
“What?”
“You changed routing protocols.”
“I changed them because our fuel costs were terrible.”
“And accidentally eliminated three compromised lanes.”
Ruby sat.
“So the illegal shipping stopped because of my restructuring?”
“Yes.”
“Did you know?”
“Not immediately.”
“When did you realize?”
“After the second month.”
Ruby stared at nothing.
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
Gideon sighed.
“Because then I would have needed to explain everything else.”
“That excuse is getting old.”
“I know.”
She almost laughed.
Agent Price entered.
Ruby lowered her voice.
“I have to go.”
“Call me if anything changes.”
“Gideon.”
“Yes?”
“Don’t come here.”
A pause.
“Why?”
“Because fifty cameras are outside.”
“I don’t care about cameras.”
“I do. This needs to be Gallagher Freight answering questions, not Gideon Rossi arriving like my criminal guardian angel.”
Silence.
Then, unexpectedly:
“Criminal guardian angel?”
“Don’t enjoy that.”
“I’m trying not to.”
Ruby ended the call before he could hear her laugh.
Agent Price sat across from her.
“Your husband?”
“Yes.”
“You two live separately?”
Ruby stiffened.
“Is that relevant?”
“Maybe.”
Price opened a folder.
“We know Mr. Rossi invested heavily in Gallagher Freight.”
“That’s public.”
“We also know your father had contact with Viktor Salvi.”
Ruby remained still.
Price placed several bank transfers on the table.
Thomas Gallagher had received money.
Not borrowed.
Received.
Two hundred thousand dollars.
Then another hundred fifty.
Then three hundred.
All routed through shell companies.
Ruby stared.
“What is this?”
“That’s what we hoped you could tell us.”
“I can’t.”
“Did your father sell access?”
“I don’t know.”
“Did he intentionally facilitate illegal shipments?”
Ruby swallowed.
“I don’t know.”
“Did Gideon Rossi know?”
Ruby looked at Agent Price.
There it was.
The real question.
This investigation was not only about Gallagher Freight.
They wanted Gideon.
Ruby chose her words carefully.
“My husband had concerns about certain routes.”
“Did he tell you?”
“No.”
“Why?”
“You’d have to ask him.”
Price studied her.
“Mrs. Rossi, are you protecting him?”
Ruby smiled sadly.
“At the moment, Agent Price, I’m still trying to figure out whether I should forgive him.”
Price almost smiled.
Then she closed the folder.
“There’s something you should see.”
She showed Ruby an image.
Security footage.
A warehouse.
A man walking beside Thomas.
Ruby recognized him.
Leon Marchetti.
Her heart stopped.
“When?”
Price pointed to the timestamp.
Nine months ago.
Before Ruby’s wedding.
“What were they doing?”
“We hoped you could tell us.”
Ruby stared at Leon’s face.
He had known Thomas before.
Nobody told her.
Again.
That evening, she confronted him.
Leon arrived at the apartment carrying pizza.
Ruby opened the door and held up the photograph.
His expression fell.
“Where did you get that?”
“Federal agent.”
“Wonderful.”
“You knew my father before Gideon’s deal.”
“Yes.”
“How?”
Leon entered slowly.
“Ruby—”
“No speeches. No protecting me.”
He set the pizza down.
“Your father came to us first.”
She stared.
“What?”
“He approached Gideon.”
That changed everything.
Ruby had believed Gideon found the collapsing company and proposed marriage.
Instead—
“My father suggested the deal?”
“Not the marriage.”
“Then what?”
“The ports.”
Ruby’s mouth went dry.
Leon continued.
“Thomas offered the port rights to cover his debt.”
“But he didn’t control them.”
“He claimed he did.”
“Gideon discovered the trust?”
“Not until recently.”
Ruby paced.
“So Gideon thought my father could transfer them.”
“Yes.”
“And when the deed restrictions blocked the sale…”
“The attorneys proposed family integration.”
Ruby stopped.
“Marriage.”
Leon nodded.
Ruby laughed in disbelief.
“My father sold me.”
“No.”
“Really? Because that’s starting to feel accurate.”
“He didn’t propose the marriage.”
“But he accepted it.”
Leon said nothing.
Ruby looked away.
The hurt was different from Gideon’s betrayal.
Deeper.
Gideon had met her as part of a deal.
Thomas had raised her.
Her father knew exactly what kind of sacrifice the marriage required.
And he allowed it to happen because his mistakes needed saving.
“Did Gideon know my father was hiding the true debt?”
“Not initially.”
“When he discovered it?”
“He paid the rest.”
Ruby nodded.
Five million dollars.
Another secret.
“Why?”
Leon looked at her.
“You keep asking that.”
“Because nobody gives me a straight answer.”
“Fine.”
Leon leaned against the counter.
“Because by then, Gideon loved you.”
Ruby’s breath stopped.
Leon continued.
“He’ll kill me for saying that.”
“He never said it.”
“He barely says good morning.”
Ruby turned away.
“That doesn’t mean anything.”
“It means everything.”
Leon’s voice softened.
“He canceled the liquidation three weeks after you cooked pasta together.”
Ruby looked back.
Three weeks.
That timeline.
Their kiss.
The night in the kitchen.
“You said two weeks before I found the file.”
“That’s when it became official.”
“So he started dismantling the plan earlier.”
“Yes.”
Ruby sat.
Her emotions became impossible to organize.
“He still lied.”
“Yes.”
“He still planned to destroy Gallagher Freight.”
“Yes.”
“He still called me collateral.”
“Yes.”
“But…”
Leon waited.
Ruby couldn’t finish.
Because forgiveness frightened her more than anger.
Anger protected.
Forgiveness reopened the door.
Her phone rang.
Agent Price.
Ruby answered.
“Mrs. Rossi, we found something.”
“What?”
“A second set of shipping records.”
“Where?”
“Encrypted drive from your father’s office.”
Ruby stood.
“What do they show?”
Price paused.
“They show the illegal containers weren’t authorized by Thomas Gallagher.”
Ruby stared.
“Then who?”
“The credentials belonged to someone else.”
“Who?”
Price gave the name.
Ruby’s blood ran cold.
Marcus Reed.
The supervisor who had worked for Gallagher Freight for eighteen years.
The man who brought her dinner.
The man who helped her plan against Salvi.
The man she had trusted almost as family.
And suddenly Ruby understood that the betrayal inside Gallagher Freight had never begun with Gideon Rossi.
May you like
It had been standing beside her for years.
