Chapter 13 - Camille Makes Her Move

By sunrise, #RebeccaHale was trending.
People who never met my mother analyzed her marriage.
Her illness.
Her handwriting.
Her parenting.
Camille released selected documents showing Mom transferring money toward Vanessa’s trust.
Without context, the papers looked legitimate.
Then she released something worse.
A short audio recording.
My mother’s voice:
“I want Vanessa protected. Whatever happens, make sure the money reaches her.”
Authentic.
Rachel confirmed it.
My father called me.
“It’s edited.”
“Can you prove it?”
“I heard the original.”
“Where is it?”
“I don’t know.”
That was the problem.
Truth without evidence is just another claim.
Vanessa shut down her social accounts.
For the first time in years, she stopped posting.
Charles refused interviews.
Grandma’s doctor advised her to stay away from television.
Meanwhile, Orison’s acquisition committee got nervous.
Not because they believed Camille.
Because uncertainty costs money.
Three institutional partners paused financing.
Hale Industrial’s suppliers demanded faster payment.
One major customer threatened to cancel.
Marcus entered my office carrying coffee.
“You look homicidal.”
“I’m not.”
“Disappointed.”
I stared at the financial projections.
“If financing collapses, Hale loses payroll capacity in nineteen days.”
“We can bridge some.”
“Not all.”
“Personal capital?”
“Not enough liquid.”
He sat.
“Then we need the truth faster.”
The phone rang.
Thomas Wren.
Or rather, someone using a number connected to him.
I answered.
“Daniel Hale.”
A man spoke.
“You’re very much like Rebecca.”
“You knew my mother.”
“Yes.”
“You helped steal from her company.”
He laughed softly.
“Words are flexible.”
“Prison usually isn’t.”
“You assume I’m in your jurisdiction.”
“Where are you?”
“Somewhere warmer.”
I signaled Marcus to start tracing.
Thomas continued.
“Camille is going to bury you.”
“Then why warn me?”
“Because Camille believes I’m expendable.”
Interesting.
“What do you want?”
“Immunity.”
“I can’t give you that.”
“You can influence the people who can.”
“I won’t promise anything.”
“Then your father goes down with Camille.”
“He may anyway.”
Silence.
Thomas had expected me to protect Gregory.
He did not understand our family.
“What do you have?”
“The original recording.”
My heartbeat changed.
“Rebecca’s?”
“All of it.”
“Send it.”
“No.”
“What do you want?”
“A meeting.”
“Where?”
“You’ll receive instructions.”
The line ended.
Marcus looked at his laptop.
“Burner. Routing overseas.”
“Did we get anything?”
“Not enough.”
I called Rachel.
She immediately involved federal investigators.
That afternoon, Vanessa came to my office.
No makeup.
No phone in her hand.
She looked like a different person.
“I’m going public.”
“No.”
“Daniel.”
“Camille wants that.”
“She’s using me.”
“Yes.”
“So let me answer.”
“No.”
She stared.
“You don’t get to control me too.”
That stopped me.
She was right.
I leaned back.
“What do you want to say?”
“The truth.”
“What truth?”
“That I didn’t know about the trust.”
“Good.”
“That Dad raised me and Charles is biologically my father.”
“Vanessa—”
“I’m tired of people using it like a weapon.”
I said nothing.
She continued.
“And I want to apologize to you.”
“You don’t have to do that publicly.”
“Yes, I do.”
“Why?”
“Because I humiliated you publicly.”
Fair.
She held my gaze.
“For once, I want the camera to show something true.”
That evening, Vanessa posted a video.
No editing.
No music.
No beauty filter.
Just her sitting on her apartment floor.
“My name is Vanessa Hale,” she began.
“You probably know me as the woman who recorded her brother being humiliated at dinner.”
She swallowed.
“I thought it was funny.”
“It wasn’t.”
She admitted Dad had lied to her about me.
She admitted she had believed those lies because they were convenient.
She revealed Charles was her biological father.
Then she said:
“Gregory Hale raised me. Whatever mistakes he made, that part of my life was real.”
Finally:
“My brother Daniel owes me nothing. But when my life collapsed, he opened his door anyway.”
The video spread faster than the original dinner clip.
Comments changed.
Public sympathy shifted.
But at 11:07 p.m., Camille made her move.
She filed suit claiming Vanessa’s trust.
She alleged Vanessa was mentally unfit to control the assets.
And attached to the filing was a medical document.
A psychiatric evaluation.
Supposedly signed years earlier.
Vanessa stared at it.
“I’ve never seen this doctor.”
Rachel examined the signature.
My father called.
His voice shook.
“I know that report.”
“What?”
“Camille used it before.”
“When?”
“The night Rebecca changed the trust.”
Suddenly the missing piece clicked.
Camille had not only threatened my mother with me.
She had threatened to have Vanessa declared unstable if the family resisted.
The trust.
The secrecy.
The documents.

It had always been about control.
And somewhere, Thomas Wren had the recording that could prove it.
