Chapter 8 - The Secret Hidden in Elise’s Clinic

The photograph showed Claire leaving Mercy Hospital at 6:43 on a winter morning.

She wore blue scrubs.

Hair tied back.

Coffee in one hand.

She looked exhausted.

Happy.

Ordinary.

On the back someone had written:

C. BENNETT — CONFIRMED.

Claire stared at it in Mara’s office.

“Confirmed for what?”

“We don’t know.”

Mara slid another document across the desk.

“Vale was not employed by Vincent five years ago.”

Claire looked up.

“What?”

“He joined Caruso Holdings three years later.”

“So he knew me before he knew Vincent?”

“Apparently.”

That changed everything.

Claire called Rebecca.

“Do you remember anyone named Adrian Vale?”

“No.”

“Marcus Marlowe?”

Pause.

“No. Why?”

“Elise Marlowe?”

Another pause.

Claire heard it.

“Rebecca.”

“I knew an Elise.”

Claire stood.

“When?”

“Years ago. She volunteered at Mercy.”

Claire’s skin prickled.

“What department?”

“Cardiology fundraising. She wasn’t there long.”

“Did I know her?”

“I don’t remember you speaking.”

Claire sent the photograph.

Rebecca called back immediately.

“I remember this morning.”

“How?”

“You were leaving after the Harbor Tunnel crash.”

Claire remembered.

Six-car collision.

Multiple trauma patients.

She had stayed nineteen hours.

Rebecca continued.

“There was a man asking questions about you.”

Claire’s throat tightened.

“What questions?”

“Whether you had family. Whether you were married.”

“And you didn’t think that was strange?”

“He said he was from a nursing recruitment agency.”

“Was it Vale?”

“I don’t know.”

Claire sat down.

Elise had not appeared in Vincent’s life by chance.

Neither had Vale.

But why Claire?

The answer arrived from Westbridge Clinic.

A detective obtained records tied to Elise’s supposed cardiac emergency.

One record stood out.

Five years earlier, Elise had been treated at Mercy Hospital after a minor accident.

Claire searched her memory.

Nothing.

Then Rebecca found the old staffing log.

Claire had been assigned.

The memory returned slowly.

A blonde woman.

Twenty-something.

Car accident.

No serious injury.

Upset.

Claire had stayed after her shift because the woman was afraid to call her family.

Elise.

Claire had treated her kindly.

So why target her years later?

Vincent found the missing connection.

Marcus Marlowe.

Five years ago, his investment company was under federal scrutiny.

One of the executives who agreed to testify against him had been hospitalized after the Harbor Tunnel crash.

Claire helped save that man.

His name was Samuel Pierce.

Samuel later provided evidence that cost Marcus millions and sent two associates to prison.

Claire had never known.

To her, Samuel Pierce was simply another patient.

To Marcus, Claire Bennett was the nurse who had kept a dangerous witness alive.

It sounded absurd.

Until they found Adrian Vale’s emails.

Marcus had tracked several people connected to the case.

Claire among them.

Years later, when Claire married Vincent Caruso—the business rival Marcus blamed for triggering the investigation—she became useful twice over.

Elise’s assignment had been simple.

Get close to Vincent.

Create instability.

Gain information.

The affair became a weapon.

The storm became an opportunity.

Claire listened while Mara explained the findings.

When she finished, Claire sat silently.

“So Elise chose Vincent because of me?”

“Partly.”

“And Vincent chose Elise because…”

Mara did not answer.

Claire did.

“Because Vincent wanted to.”

No conspiracy changed that.

It mattered.

Claire refused to let him hide behind manipulation.

That evening Vincent called.

“I assume Mara told you.”

“She did.”

“I want you and Ethan moved somewhere secure.”

“No.”

“Claire.”

“You’re doing it again.”

“What?”

“Deciding.”

He stopped.

Claire continued.

“You could ask.”

A pause.

Then:

“Would you consider moving temporarily somewhere with stronger security?”

Claire almost smiled.

“No.”

Vincent sighed.

“Worth trying.”

“But I’ll accept additional police protection.”

“Good.”

“Police. Not your men.”

“Understood.”

She hesitated.

“Vincent?”

“Yes.”

“Why did you sleep with her?”

Silence.

Perhaps he expected anger.

The question was quieter than that.

“I don’t know.”

“Try.”

He took a long breath.

“I was selfish.”

“That’s not an explanation.”

“No.”

Another pause.

“You were pregnant. Happy. Building something real.”

“And that scared you?”

“Yes.”

Claire closed her eyes.

Vincent continued.

“My father left when I was eight. My mother taught me never to need anyone because needing someone gave them power.”

Claire listened.

“When you became pregnant, I realized I needed you.”

“So you betrayed me before I could hurt you.”

“Yes.”

“That’s pathetic.”

“Yes.”

His agreement made it harder to stay angry.

Not impossible.

Just harder.

“I’m not forgiving you.”

“I know.”

“I may never.”

“I know.”

Claire looked toward Ethan’s crib.

“What happens if Elise is charged?”

“Then she answers for what she did.”

“And you?”

“I already am.”

Claire frowned.

“What does that mean?”

“The board is investigating my use of private emergency resources.”

“You could lose control of Caruso Holdings.”

“Yes.”

“Are you fighting it?”

“No.”

That surprised her.

“Why?”

“Because I sent the convoy.”

Claire said nothing.

He continued.

“No one forced me. Elise manipulated the circumstances, but the decision was mine.”

For the first time since the storm, Claire felt something toward Vincent that was not anger.

Not love.

Not forgiveness.

Respect, perhaps.

Small.

Unsteady.

Dangerous.

Before she could answer, someone knocked on her door.

Three sharp taps.

Claire froze.

“Claire?”

Vincent heard the silence.

“Who is it?”

“I don’t know.”

The knock came again.

Claire moved toward Ethan.

“Don’t open it,” Vincent said.

“I wasn’t going to.”

Her phone buzzed.

A text from an unknown number.

Ask Vincent what happened to Samuel Pierce after he testified.

Claire stared.

Then another message appeared.

Some people survive the first time. They don’t survive forever.

Vincent’s voice sharpened through the phone.

“Claire, talk to me.”

She picked up Ethan.

May you like

And outside the apartment, the hallway light went out.
