Chapter 3 - The Woman Adrian Trusted More Than His Wife

Claire replayed Vanessa’s voicemail twice.

She did not call back.

Instead, she went directly to a coffee shop crowded enough to make her feel safe.

The envelope addressed to Adrian remained inside her bag.

So did the flash drive.

Claire ordered coffee she barely touched.

Her instinct told her to destroy everything.

Her mother’s instinct had told her the opposite.

Margaret wanted Adrian to know.

That mattered.

Claire called the attorney who had prepared her divorce papers.

“Elena, I need a favor.”

“What happened?”

“If I give you something sealed, can you deliver it to Adrian without telling him where I am?”

“Yes.”

“And make sure Vanessa Reed never touches it.”

A pause.

“Claire, should I be worried?”

“I don’t know yet.”

That was the truth.

Across Chicago, Adrian was asking himself the same question.

Vanessa had been removed from every Kane system.

Her access cards were cancelled.

Her accounts were frozen pending an internal investigation.

But she had disappeared before Adrian’s security team returned to question her.

That bothered him.

What bothered him more was the hospital recording.

His attorney finally obtained it that afternoon.

Adrian sat alone when he listened.

Vanessa’s voice was unmistakable.

“This is Vanessa Reed calling on behalf of Mr. Adrian Kane regarding Margaret Bennett.”

A hospital administrator responded.

“We need immediate authorization.”

“I understand.”

“Mrs. Bennett’s condition is deteriorating.”

“I understand.”

“Then may we proceed?”

There was a pause.

Vanessa answered:

“Mr. Kane requires additional verification.”

Adrian gripped the desk.

The administrator sounded frustrated.

“We already supplied everything requested.”

“I’m afraid that isn’t sufficient.”

“Ms. Reed, delaying treatment could have serious consequences.”

“I understand.”

The recording ended.

Adrian stared at the wall.

Vanessa had known.

Not vaguely.

Not afterward.

She had known Margaret was deteriorating while Claire begged for help.

Yet Adrian could not escape the deeper truth.

Vanessa had invoked his name because everyone believed she spoke for him.

Including Claire.

Especially Claire.

The door opened.

His attorney entered.

“There’s someone here.”

“Who?”

“Claire’s lawyer.”

Adrian stood immediately.

“Is Claire with her?”

“No.”

Elena Morales entered carrying a sealed envelope.

She did not sit.

“Claire asked me to deliver this.”

“Where is she?”

“I’m not authorized to tell you.”

“Is she safe?”

“Yes.”

That single word released tension Adrian hadn’t realized he was carrying.

“Can I speak to her?”

“No.”

“Will you tell her I asked?”

“I can.”

Elena placed the envelope down.

“Her mother wanted you to have this.”

Adrian looked at Margaret’s handwriting.

FOR ADRIAN KANE ONLY.

He opened it.

Inside was a photograph.

His father.

Richard Kane.

Much younger.

Standing outside a warehouse beside Margaret Bennett.

Behind them was another man Adrian recognized instantly.

Thomas Vale.

His father’s former business partner.

A man Adrian had been told died overseas years ago.

On the back of the photograph Margaret had written a date.

Three weeks before Richard Kane’s death.

There was also a letter.

Adrian,

Your father was not a good man. You probably know that better than anyone. But before he died, he was trying to undo something he had helped create.

Adrian sat down.

Margaret described how Richard had approached her years after firing her.

He apologized.

She hadn’t forgiven him.

But she listened.

Richard told her Thomas Vale had been using Kane companies to move money without authorization.

Richard planned to expose him.

Three weeks later, Richard died in what police concluded was a single-vehicle accident.

Adrian had always accepted that story.

Until now.

Margaret wrote:

Richard gave me records because he no longer trusted anyone inside his own organization. I kept them because I was afraid. Years later, when you married Claire, I almost destroyed them. I hoped the past was dead.

It wasn’t.

Adrian’s phone rang.

Security.

“We found Vanessa.”

“Where?”

“She contacted us.”

“Why?”

“She says she wants immunity.”

Adrian almost smiled.

“For what?”

“She says Thomas Vale is alive.”

Adrian looked at the photograph.

“Bring her in.”

Vanessa arrived an hour later.

Without the tailored suit and perfect composure, she looked different.

Smaller.

Scared.

“Thomas Vale recruited me eight years ago,” she said.

Adrian remained silent.

“He wanted information about Kane businesses.”

“And Claire?”

“At first, Claire didn’t matter.”

“At first?”

Vanessa swallowed.

“Then Thomas discovered who her mother was.”

Adrian’s expression hardened.

“He believed Margaret still had Richard’s records.”

“So you targeted Claire.”

“I monitored her.”

“You humiliated her.”

Vanessa looked down.

“I needed to know whether Margaret had given her anything.”

“You delayed medical treatment.”

“I didn’t know she would die.”

“You were told her condition was deteriorating.”

“I thought they were exaggerating.”

Adrian stood.

Vanessa flinched.

He stopped himself several feet away.

“You used my distrust of my wife against her.”

Vanessa’s eyes filled with tears.

“Yes.”

“And I let you.”

Vanessa didn’t answer.

Adrian turned away.

“Where is Vale?”

“I don’t know.”

“Then why come here?”

“Because he contacted me after Claire left.”

“What did he want?”

“The records.”

Adrian looked toward her.

“He thinks Claire has them now.”

A cold silence filled the room.

“Does he know where she is?”

“I don’t know.”

Adrian immediately called his security chief.

“Claire may be in danger.”

His chief began issuing instructions.

Adrian stopped him.

“No tracking her phone. Contact her attorney first. Tell Claire exactly what we know. She decides what protection she wants.”

Vanessa looked surprised.

Months earlier, Adrian would simply have sent men.

But he finally understood something Claire had been trying to tell him for years.

Protection without choice could become another form of control.

Claire received Elena’s call twenty minutes later.

She listened quietly.

Thomas Vale.

Her mother’s records.

Possible danger.

Then Elena said something unexpected.

“Adrian specifically told them not to track you.”

Claire looked out the motel window.

“Why?”

“He said you decide what happens next.”

Claire said nothing.

That did not erase anything.

But it sounded unlike the man she had left.

“I’m moving somewhere safer,” Claire said.

“Good.”

“And I’ll examine the flash drive.”

That evening, Claire opened it on an old laptop.

Dozens of files appeared.

Shipping records.

Bank transfers.

Corporate registrations.

Then a folder labeled:

A.K.

Claire clicked it.

It wasn’t about Adrian.

It contained letters written by Richard to his son but apparently never delivered.

Claire opened the final one.

Adrian, if anything happens to me, do not trust Thomas. And do not become the kind of man I taught you to be.

Claire stared at the screen.

Then another file caught her attention.

A recent access log.

Someone had opened this flash drive six months ago.

Margaret had not done it.

She had been hospitalized then.

Claire checked the device information.

The computer used to access it belonged to a Kane company.

And the registered user was someone Claire knew.

Someone who had attended her wedding.

May you like

Someone Adrian still trusted completely.

Daniel Mercer.
