Chapter 2 - Forty-Five Minutes Later

Claire pulled the rabbit from Lily’s hands.

My daughter didn’t scream.

That was the worst part.

A child surprised by cruelty protests.

A child familiar with it becomes quiet.

Claire carried the rabbit toward a bookshelf.

Lily followed two steps.

“Please.”

Claire placed it on the highest shelf.

Far beyond a six-year-old’s reach.

“Maybe now you’ll remember what I tell you.”

Lily stared upward.

Her lower lip trembled.

Emma stepped beside her.

“Give it back.”

Claire turned.

“What?”

Emma’s voice was small, but steady.

“It was our mom’s.”

I had never been prouder of her.

I had never hated myself more.

Claire crossed the room.

“You need to stop using your dead mother as an excuse every time someone gives you rules.”

My hand closed around the edge of the console.

Daniel looked at it.

“Alex.”

“I’m fine.”

I wasn’t.

Men had threatened me.

Betrayed me.

Stolen from me.

I had spent decades learning not to react emotionally.

But there are things discipline doesn’t prepare you for.

Watching someone make your daughter afraid inside the home you built to keep her safe is one of them.

Emma placed herself between Claire and Lily.

It wasn’t dramatic.

She simply shifted half a step.

Enough to matter.

Claire noticed too.

“Move.”

Emma didn’t.

“Emma.”

“No.”

Claire stared at her.

Then Maria entered.

She carried folded towels.

Her eyes moved from Lily to the rabbit on the shelf, then to Emma standing defensively in front of her sister.

She understood immediately.

“Girls,” Maria said gently. “Ms. Parker will arrive soon. Why don’t we get your schoolbooks?”

Claire blocked her.

“No.”

Maria stopped.

Claire pointed toward the kitchen.

“Go finish your work.”

“I was going to help them prepare.”

“I didn’t ask you to.”

Maria’s expression barely changed.

“Miss Claire, they were only reading.”

Claire laughed once.

Cold.

“You’re hired help.”

Maria remained still.

“You are not their mother.”

I stopped breathing.

“You are nobody in this house.”

The statement hit harder than Claire intended.

Because Maria had never claimed to be anything else.

After Elena died, I spent six months barely functioning.

I still worked.

Still attended meetings.

Still kept the machine around me moving.

But fatherhood became something I performed between phone calls.

Maria noticed things I didn’t.

Emma stopped eating strawberries because they reminded her of hospital breakfasts.

Lily couldn’t sleep without the hallway light on.

Emma started hiding drawings of Elena under her mattress because seeing them made me quiet.

Maria never told them to forget their mother.

She taught them that remembering someone wasn’t the same as refusing to live.

And I had allowed Claire to convince me that loyalty was manipulation.

Maria set the towels down.

“With respect,” she said, “I’m responsible for the girls while Mr. Vance is traveling.”

Claire smiled.

“No. You’re responsible for cleaning.”

“They are expecting their tutor.”

“I said upstairs.”

Lily whispered, “I want Bunny.”

Claire ignored her.

“Upstairs.”

Emma squeezed her hand.

“Come on.”

Lily didn’t move.

“Please don’t be mean to Emma.”

Claire’s head turned slowly.

“What did you say?”

Lily immediately looked down.

Nothing.

That familiar silence again.

Claire stepped forward.

In the security room, Daniel muttered a curse.

“Alex, enough.”

I was already standing.

Then Claire seized Lily’s wrist.

My chair struck the floor behind me.

Maria moved faster.

One hand closed over Claire’s forearm.

Firm.

Controlled.

“Do not touch her.”

Everything froze.

Claire stared at Maria’s hand.

“Take your hand off me.”

“Release Lily.”

“You are fired.”

“Release her.”

The strength in Maria’s voice surprised me.

She wasn’t shouting.

She didn’t need to.

Lily stared at her.

Claire released my daughter.

Maria immediately stepped between them.

Emma pulled Lily behind her.

Claire looked furious.

“You’ll regret that.”

Maria’s face remained calm.

“If protecting them costs me this job, I accept that.”

Those words cut through me.

I had spent the night wondering if Maria had stolen a bracelet.

Meanwhile, she was willing to lose everything to protect my children.

Daniel stood.

“We should go upstairs.”

I reached for the door.

Then stopped.

On the screen, Claire smiled.

It was sudden.

Calculated.

“Actually,” she said, “you’re right.”

Maria didn’t move.

“I’m angry.”

Claire adjusted her dress.

“I shouldn’t have grabbed her.”

Emma watched her suspiciously.

Claire turned toward the girls.

“I’m sorry.”

Neither responded.

Something about the apology felt wrong.

Not because it was insincere.

Because Claire wasn’t apologizing to them.

She was changing tactics.

She looked toward the corner of the room.

Directly toward one of the cameras.

My skin went cold.

Did she know?

No.

Impossible.

The system was concealed.

Only Daniel and I had full access.

Claire smiled sweetly.

“Why don’t we all calm down?”

Daniel leaned toward the monitor.

“She looked right at Camera Three.”

“I saw.”

“You think she knows?”

“No.”

But I no longer trusted my answer.

Claire retrieved the rabbit.

She handed it to Lily.

“Here.”

Lily grabbed it and immediately retreated beside Maria.

Claire smiled again.

“See? Everything is fine.”

Then she left.

For ten seconds, nobody moved.

Maria knelt beside Lily.

“Are you okay?”

Lily nodded.

Emma shook her head.

Maria looked at her.

Emma whispered something.

The camera microphone barely caught it.

Daniel increased the volume.

“What did she say?”

He replayed the audio.

Emma’s voice came through.

“She only acts nice when she thinks Daddy might find out.”

The room tilted.

Daniel looked at me.

I couldn’t speak.

Maria whispered, “Has she done this before?”

Emma stared at the doorway.

“Yes.”

I closed my eyes.

Not because I couldn’t handle the answer.

Because I already knew what came next.

“How many times?” Maria asked.

Emma looked at Lily.

“Lots.”

Lily buried her face in the rabbit.

Maria’s eyes filled with tears.

“When?”

“When Daddy leaves.”

I opened my eyes.

Something inside me became very still.

This wasn’t an isolated moment.

It was a system.

Claire had learned my schedule.

Waited for departures.

Changed personalities.

Then changed back before I returned.

And my daughters had adapted around it.

Daniel reached for the intercom.

I stopped him.

“No.”

“Alex.”

“If I walk in now, I stop today.”

He stared at me.

“I need to know everything.”

“Your daughters have already shown you enough.”

“I know.”

My voice cracked on the final word.

I hated that.

But I continued.

“If Claire has done this for months, I need evidence of all of it. I need to know whether anyone else knows. I need to know why Emma never told me.”

Daniel’s expression hardened.

“You really want the answer to that?”

No.

But I needed it.

A notification appeared on another monitor.

CAM 07 — CLAIRE’S OFFICE.

Claire entered her private sitting room.

She shut the door.

Then she removed her phone.

Daniel enlarged the image.

Claire dialed.

We couldn’t hear the person answering.

But we heard her.

“He left this morning.”

Pause.

“Yes.”

She walked toward the window.

“Four days.”

Another pause.

Then she smiled.

“No. He doesn’t suspect anything.”

Daniel and I looked at each other.

Claire lowered her voice.

“The wedding is still on.”

My pulse slowed.

She listened.

Then said five words that changed everything.

“Once we’re married, it’s easier.”

The call ended.

Daniel turned toward me.

“This isn’t only about the girls.”

“No.”

“What do you want to do?”

I stared at the screen.

Claire placed her phone inside a drawer.

Then she opened another drawer.

And removed something wrapped in black velvet.

She set it on the table.

Even through the camera, I recognized it.

My mother’s missing diamond bracelet.

The bracelet Claire said Maria had stolen.

For the first time that morning, anger gave way to something colder.

Understanding.

Claire hadn’t merely lied to me.

She had built a case.

Against Maria.

Against my instincts.

Against everyone my daughters trusted.

And if the bracelet was in Claire’s possession, one question mattered more than all the others.

May you like

What else had she planted?
