Chapter 6 - Box 317

Claire didn't cry.

That frightened Roman more than tears would have.

She stood in the Harbor Ridge lobby forty-three minutes later while the administrator explained that a woman wearing a hat and mask had presented identification in Claire's name.

"You didn't call me?"

"We did."

"No, you called a number."

The administrator looked confused.

"It was the emergency contact listed yesterday."

Claire's blood ran cold.

"My emergency contact is Mrs. Patel."

The administrator opened the file.

"Not anymore."

Roman stepped forward.

"Who changed it?"

"Online authorization."

"When?"

"Three weeks ago."

Vivian.

Or Charles.

Claire gripped the brass key.

Roman touched her shoulder.

"We'll find her."

Claire turned.

"If they hurt her—"

"They won't."

"You don't know that."

"No."

Roman held her gaze.

"But they need something from you. That keeps Lily valuable."

It was a terrible comfort.

But it was logical.

Claire nodded.

Her phone rang.

Unknown number.

Roman saw it.

"Speaker."

Claire answered.

"Hello?"

Lily's voice came through.

"Claire?"

Claire nearly collapsed.

"Lily! Are you okay?"

"I'm fine. There's a man here."

A male voice replaced hers.

"Box 317."

Claire's fingers tightened around the key.

"What about it?"

"Open it."

Roman silently signaled Dominic.

Trace.

The man continued.

"Bring what's inside to the old Mercer freight terminal in Red Hook."

"Let me talk to Lily."

"You already did."

"If you touch her—"

"Midnight."

The call ended.

Claire looked at Roman.

"I'm going."

"No."

"Don't start."

"They expect you."

"Exactly."

"They'll kill you after they get the evidence."

"Then what do you suggest?"

Roman looked at the bank across the street.

"We open the box."

Inside Box 317 was no ledger.

There was a flash drive.

And a letter.

The letter was addressed to Lily.

Claire opened it.

Her father's handwriting again.

My girls,

If this reaches you, then everything I tried to keep buried has found you anyway.

I'm sorry.

The drive contains copies of every Northstar account I could save.

But the most important file is called WINTER.

Claire inserted the drive into Dominic's secure laptop.

Folders appeared.

Hundreds.

Payments.

Names.

Dates.

Photographs.

Then WINTER.

Dominic opened it.

An audio recording.

Thomas Bennett's voice filled the room.

"My name is Thomas Bennett. If you're hearing this, Charles Mercer and Salvatore DeLuca probably know I copied their accounts."

Roman stood absolutely still.

Thomas continued.

"Daniel DeLuca is helping me. He doesn't know his brother has already authorized a contract on his life."

Roman closed his eyes.

Claire reached for his hand without thinking.

He let her.

The recording continued.

"Charles Mercer believes debt is better than violence because frightened people police themselves. But if debt fails, he uses violence."

Then another name.

"Vivian Mercer has no involvement. She's twenty-two and doesn't know what her father is doing."

Claire looked at Roman.

Vivian had been innocent then.

Not now.

Thomas's voice softened.

"If something happens to me, the money Northstar claims I owe is fraudulent. Claire, don't pay them. Lily, none of this happened because you got sick."

Claire covered her mouth.

Lily had spent six years believing exactly that.

The recording ended with one final revelation.

"The master accounts are mirrored automatically. Destroying this drive won't destroy the evidence."

Dominic sat forward.

"Where's the mirror?"

Thomas answered from twelve years in the past.

"Federal escrow server. Release code is split between two keys."

Claire looked at the brass key.

Roman understood.

"They don't need the drive."

"They need the release key."

Claire stood.

"And they think I have both."

Roman nodded.

That changed everything.

At 11:47 p.m., Claire entered the old Mercer terminal.

Alone.

At least that was what Charles Mercer believed.

Roman hated every second.

Claire wore a microphone beneath her coat.

Federal agents waited three blocks away.

Roman waited closer.

Much closer.

Charles stood inside the warehouse beside Lily's wheelchair.

Vivian was there too.

Claire stopped.

"Let her go."

Lily looked terrified but unharmed.

"Claire."

"I'm okay."

Charles held out his hand.

"The key."

Claire lifted it.

"You mean this?"

His eyes changed.

Greed.

Fear.

Relief.

All at once.

"Give it to me."

"No."

Charles smiled.

"You've inherited your father's stupidity."

"My father beat you."

"Your father died."

"But you spent twelve years looking for what he hid."

The smile disappeared.

Claire continued.

"That's losing, Charles."

Roman heard everything through the microphone.

He almost smiled.

Charles stepped toward her.

"You think Roman will save you?"

Claire's heart hammered.

"I don't need Roman to save me."

That made Roman's smile disappear.

Then return differently.

Pride.

Claire held up her phone.

"I needed you to admit why."

Charles froze.

"Why what?"

"Why you created the debt."

Silence.

Claire pushed.

"Why did you make my family pay money we never owed?"

Charles laughed.

"Because your father stole from me."

"Evidence isn't yours."

"He destroyed thirty years of work."

"You mean blackmail."

Charles's expression darkened.

"You have no idea what power costs."

"I know exactly what yours cost."

Claire looked at Lily.

"It cost us six years."

Charles reached for the key.

Claire stepped backward.

Vivian suddenly moved between them.

"Enough."

Charles stared at his daughter.

"Move."

"No."

"Vivian."

"You said Lily wouldn't be hurt."

Charles's voice hardened.

"I said move."

Vivian didn't.

For the first time in her life, she openly defied her father.

Charles struck her.

Roman moved.

Federal agents surged through three entrances.

Chaos erupted.

Roman reached Claire first.

Lily screamed.

Charles grabbed for her wheelchair.

Claire slammed herself into him.

He stumbled.

Roman caught Charles by the collar.

Every instinct in him wanted violence.

One punch.

Two.

Maybe never stop.

Then Claire said his name.

"Roman."

He looked at her.

She shook her head.

Don't become them.

Roman released Charles.

Federal agents took him.

Salvatore was arrested twenty minutes later at a private airfield.

By sunrise, Northstar's servers were in federal custody.

The debt was declared fraudulent.

Lily was safe.

Claire stood outside the warehouse as dawn colored the sky.

Roman approached.

"It's over."

Claire exhaled.

"Is it?"

His phone rang.

Dominic.

Roman answered.

His expression changed.

"What?"

Claire's stomach tightened.

Dominic spoke quickly.

Roman looked at her.

"Salvatore gave them a deal."

"What kind?"

"He gave them the second release key."

Claire frowned.

"Then that's good."

Roman didn't answer.

"Roman?"

"He also gave them a name."

"Whose?"

Roman looked toward Vivian, sitting inside an ambulance.

"The person who ordered my father's murder."

Claire waited.

Roman's face went completely still.

May you like

"It wasn't Charles."
