Chapter 10 - Two Amber Eyes and a DNA Report

The twins met their great-grandmother the next morning.

Teresa took one look at Mila and burst into tears.

That startled everyone.

Including Teresa.

She immediately wiped her face and announced, "Nobody saw that."

Leo whispered to Mila, "I saw it."

"So did I."

Teresa pointed at both of them.

"You are already trouble."

Mila smiled.

"You have Marco's eyes."

Teresa looked at her grandson.

"Unfortunately, so do you."

For three hours, our crisis disappeared beneath pancakes, toy trains, and Teresa showing the twins photographs of Marco as a child.

Mila held up one picture.

"That's Leo."

"No," I said. "That's Marco."

She looked between the photograph and her brother.

"They're the same."

Marco stared at the image.

I watched the realization hurt him again.

He had lost years.

No explanation would restore them.

But maybe there could still be years ahead.

That thought frightened me because hope was far more dangerous than anger.

Later that morning, a doctor arrived.

At my request.

Not Marco's.

DNA testing.

Marco never questioned paternity.

He hadn't once.

But legal reality mattered now because of the trust.

And because I never wanted anyone to suggest my children belonged to a fortune before they belonged to themselves.

The doctor took samples.

Mila complained.

Leo asked seventeen questions.

Marco let both children swab his mouth afterward because they thought it was funny.

Results would come quickly.

While we waited, Daniel and I went to Union Station.

Locker 317 contained three boxes.

The first held financial records.

The second held recordings and photographs.

The third held letters.

My mother's handwriting was unmistakable.

One envelope read:

FOR MY DAUGHTERS, WHEN THE TRUTH FINALLY COSTS MORE THAN THE LIE.

My hands shook.

Sofia had apparently found it years earlier.

She had never destroyed it.

Why?

Back at Teresa's house, I sat alone in the library and opened the letter.

My girls,

If you are reading this together, I am grateful. If you are reading it separately, I am sorry.

My vision blurred.

You were born eighteen months apart, but from the moment Sofia first held Elena, I knew you would either become each other's greatest protection or greatest wound.

I pressed the paper to my mouth.

Mother continued.

Your father loves you. This matters because people often imagine that harm can only come from hatred. They are wrong. Fear can damage a family just as thoroughly. Anthony is afraid of losing control. He inherited that fear from men who taught him love meant possession.

I thought of my father.

The staged separation.

The surveillance.

His silence afterward.

The Bellini-Vale trust should have been dissolved decades ago. Instead, powerful men transformed it into a symbol of legacy. If either of you becomes entangled with the Bellini family, do not let them convince you that bloodlines determine your worth.

Then a line aimed directly at Sofia.

Sofia, being overlooked is painful. But another person's love is not something stolen from you. Elena receiving affection does not mean you were denied it. Do not build your life measuring what lands in your sister's hands.

I cried then.

Because Mother had seen the wound before any of us understood it.

Next:

Elena, you forgive too quickly until the moment you don't. Then you run. Learn that leaving can save you, but sometimes staying long enough to hear the truth can save you too.

I laughed through tears.

Even dead, my mother knew me.

The letter ended simply.

Whatever happens, choose each other before you choose money, pride, or the expectations of men who believe your lives belong to them.

Love, Mom.

I sat there a long time.

Marco eventually entered.

He didn't ask what the letter said.

He sat across from me.

"They have the DNA results."

My heart jumped.

"Already?"

"Rush processing."

"And?"

He held the envelope.

"You should open it."

I almost said we already knew.

But this moment mattered.

I opened the report.

Probability of paternity: greater than 99.999%.

I stared.

Marco didn't look at the paper.

He looked at me.

"I never doubted you."

"I know."

The words came easily.

That mattered too.

He exhaled.

Then a tiny voice came from the doorway.

"What's pat... paturn...?"

Mila.

I quickly wiped my face.

"Paternity."

"What's that?"

Marco looked at me.

I nodded.

He crouched.

"It means I'm your biological father."

Mila frowned.

"What's biological?"

Leo appeared behind her.

"It means real."

My heart clenched.

Marco's face changed.

"No."

He looked at both children.

"It means we're related by blood. But that's not what makes someone real."

Leo studied him.

"You're our dad?"

Marco swallowed.

"Yes."

"Where were you?"

There it was.

The impossible question.

Marco sat on the floor.

"I didn't know where you were."

"Why?"

"Your mommy and I got separated."

"Like getting lost?"

"Yes."

Mila asked, "Did Mommy hide?"

I almost laughed.

Marco glanced at me.

"A little."

"Why?"

"Because grown-ups made mistakes."

"Did you make mistakes?"

"Many."

Leo considered this.

"Mommy says you need to say sorry."

Marco looked at me.

Then back at him.

"Your mommy is right."

He took a breath.

"I'm sorry I wasn't there."

Mila walked toward him.

"Okay."

Children.

Three years of guilt.

One okay.

Then she climbed directly into his lap.

Marco froze.

She picked up his tie.

"I don't like this."

He laughed.

"What should I wear?"

"Dinosaur shirt."

"I don't own one."

Her expression suggested this was a serious character flaw.

Leo sat beside him.

"We can buy one."

Marco looked at me.

For the first time in years, I smiled without remembering to stop myself.

A camera flash from outside shattered the moment.

Marco stood instantly.

Another flash.

Then several.

Reporters.

Daniel hurried in.

"We have a problem."

"What?"

He held up his phone.

A news website headline filled the screen.

MISSING BELLINI WIFE FOUND WITH SECRET TWINS—$2.8 BILLION TRUST DISPUTE ERUPTS.

My blood ran cold.

Below it was a photograph of me and the children in Gray Hollow.

"Who leaked it?"

Daniel's face darkened.

"Victor's people."

Then another headline appeared.

SISTER CLAIMS ELENA BELLINI UNSTABLE, CHILDREN MAY BE IN DANGER.

I stared.

"Sofia?"

"No," Daniel said. "Her attorney says she gave no statement."

"Then who?"

"Someone is using old psychiatric documents."

I almost laughed.

"I've never had psychiatric treatment."

"Exactly."

Marco read the article.

His face hardened.

Forged reports claimed I'd suffered delusions after my mother's death.

That I had abducted Marco's children.

That my identity change proved instability.

It was brilliant.

Terrible.

And designed for one thing.

Custody.

"They want the twins," I whispered.

Marco looked at me.

"Nobody is taking them."

His certainty should have comforted me.

It didn't.

Because Daniel's phone rang.

He listened.

Then said, "There's already a petition."

"What petition?"

"Emergency guardianship."

My stomach dropped.

"Filed by who?"

Daniel looked toward the front windows, where cameras flashed beyond the gates.

"Anthony Vale."

My father.

The man who claimed he wanted to undo his mistakes had just filed paperwork suggesting I was unfit to raise my own children.

Marco looked murderous.

But I felt something colder.

Understanding.

Because my father didn't want custody.

He wanted the court to freeze the trust.

And once again, my children weren't being treated as children.

They were being used as keys to a fortune.

This time, I wasn't running.

I folded the DNA report.

Then looked at Marco.

"Call the best family attorney you know."

His expression changed.

"What are you going to do?"

I glanced toward Mila and Leo.

May you like

"Fight."
