Chapter 4 - The Other Woman

I thought discovering financial fraud would be the moment my marriage ended.

I was wrong.

It ended when Margaret said her name.

Vanessa Cole.

The room seemed to move farther away.

Daniel looked at his mother with pure fury.

“You had no right.”

Margaret laughed once.

It was bitter and broken.

“No right? You just blamed everything on me.”

I looked at Daniel.

“How long?”

He said nothing.

“How long, Daniel?”

Rebecca quietly touched my arm.

“Claire.”

“I need to know.”

Daniel finally looked at me.

“About a year.”

A year.

My mind betrayed me by immediately searching backward.

Christmas.

Our anniversary.

My birthday.

The weekend in Charleston when Daniel told me he had an emergency board issue.

The night my father had surgery and Daniel said he couldn’t come because of an investor meeting.

A year meant hundreds of lies.

“Does she work for Northstar?”

Daniel’s silence answered me.

Amy whispered, “Oh, no.”

Everything connected.

Vanessa.

Graham Pike.

Meridian.

The confidential acquisition.

Daniel hadn’t merely been stealing.

He had been helping a competitor.

And apparently building a new life at the same time.

“Did you plan to leave me after the acquisition collapsed?”

Daniel’s face twitched.

I had guessed correctly.

He moved toward me.

“Claire, this is more complicated than you think.”

I almost laughed.

Every unfaithful husband apparently received the same handbook.

“It’s complicated.”

“No. It’s actually becoming remarkably simple.”

“Vanessa has nothing to do with us.”

“She received two hundred seventy thousand dollars from an account connected to stolen company funds.”

“That doesn’t mean—”

“And you’ve been sleeping with her.”

Nobody spoke.

I looked down at myself.

Soup stains covered my blouse.

For some reason, that helped.

It reminded me how this evening had started.

Daniel had wanted me humiliated.

Small.

Gone.

Instead, every minute had exposed another piece of him.

Detective Barrett was still on the phone.

“Ms. Hartwell?”

I had almost forgotten.

“Yes.”

“We’d like you and your counsel to come in tomorrow morning.”

“We will.”

Rebecca nodded.

“Also,” he continued, “do not attempt to contact Ms. Cole.”

I looked at Daniel.

“I won’t.”

After ending the call, I picked up the divorce petition.

Daniel stared at me.

“What are you doing?”

“Finishing dinner.”

I signed it.

Right there.

On the table.

Then I handed the pen to Rebecca.

Daniel’s face changed.

“Claire.”

I looked at him.

“What?”

“You’re really doing this?”

That question nearly stunned me.

He had poured soup over my head.

Ordered me from my home.

Stolen from my company.

Compromised confidential documents.

Maintained an affair.

And somehow he was surprised I intended to divorce him.

“Yes.”

He sat down.

For the first time all evening, Daniel looked tired.

“I made mistakes.”

Margaret laughed bitterly.

“Mistakes?”

He ignored her.

“Claire, we can fix this.”

“No.”

“Eleven years.”

“You should have remembered that before tonight.”

He lowered his voice.

“You don’t want to destroy everything we built.”

I looked around the dining room.

“I’m not destroying it.”

Then I looked directly at him.

“I’m separating what I built from what you tried to steal.”

That finally broke his composure.

“You always do that!”

His fist struck the table.

Glasses rattled.

“You always make it yours. Your company. Your house. Your success.”

“Because those things are mine.”

“I helped!”

“Yes. And I paid you.”

“I was your husband!”

“And that gave you permission to steal?”

His face twisted.

“You never respected me.”

I stood.

“I trusted you with everything.”

He had no answer.

That was when headlights swept across the front windows.

A vehicle stopped outside.

Then another.

Margaret looked frightened.

“Who is that?”

Rebecca walked toward the window.

“Police.”

Daniel stood immediately.

“They can’t arrest me.”

“No one said they were here to arrest you.”

Yet.

Two officers came to the door.

They were there because Rebecca had requested assistance while Daniel retrieved personal belongings from the house.

I had known he might react badly.

After the soup, I was glad she had arranged it.

Daniel looked at me with disbelief.

“You planned this?”

“I planned for possibilities.”

One officer spoke calmly with him.

Daniel was permitted to collect clothing, medication, and essential personal items.

Everything else would be handled through attorneys.

Margaret stood.

“I’m leaving too.”

I looked at her.

“You should.”

She flinched.

For years, I had tolerated her because I thought setting boundaries would make Daniel choose between us.

Tonight I finally understood.

He had already chosen.

Again and again.

Just never me.

Twenty minutes later, Daniel came downstairs carrying a suitcase.

He stopped beside me.

The police waited several feet away.

“You’re going to regret this.”

I looked at him.

“No.”

“You think Vanessa is going to protect you?” I asked.

His eyes flickered.

That surprised him.

“Because someone just moved money into her account. If she’s smart, she’s already protecting herself.”

Daniel said nothing.

Then his phone rang.

He looked at the screen.

For the first time that evening, panic crossed his face.

Vanessa.

He declined the call.

It rang again.

Declined.

Again.

Margaret stared at him.

“Answer it.”

He didn’t.

Then my phone buzzed.

Amy had sent me a link.

A local business news alert.

I opened it.

The headline made my stomach drop.

NORTHSTAR DISTRIBUTION ANNOUNCES SURPRISE BID FOR HARTWELL MEDICAL LOGISTICS

I read it twice.

“They’re trying to buy my company.”

Daniel froze.

Amy called immediately.

“Claire, the offer went public five minutes ago.”

“How?”

“We don’t know.”

I looked at Daniel.

His expression told me he did.

“What did you give them?”

He grabbed his suitcase.

“Nothing.”

“Daniel.”

He walked toward the door.

Then stopped.

Without turning around, he said something that changed the entire battle.

“You’re worried about the wrong thing.”

My blood went cold.

“What does that mean?”

He finally looked back.

“The acquisition isn’t Graham’s real plan.”

“What is?”

Daniel smiled.

“To make your board remove you.”

Then he walked out.

And thirty seconds later, my chairman called.

May you like

“Claire,” he said, “we have an emergency.”
