Chapter 15 - The Table with the Money

The first camera spotted the agents before most guests did.
Within seconds, the ballroom became a room full of people pretending not to panic.
Phones rose.
Reporters moved toward the doors.
Donors whispered.
Lucian stood backstage beside Camille, Nico, and Marco.
“Do not move,” Marco said.
Lucian looked at him.
“That is unusual advice.”
“Take it.”
Detective Morales appeared through the curtain.
“They have a warrant.”
“For what?” Lucian asked.
“Search and seizure related to suspected bribery and financial crimes.”
Camille’s stomach tightened.
“Based on the planted package?”
“Likely based on a tip plus whatever documents were sent in advance.”
Nico swore.
Lucian’s face became unreadable.
Camille knew exactly what Daniel wanted now.
Resistance.
A confrontation.
Security pushing agents.
Lucian walking out.
Anything that looked like guilt.
She touched his hand.
He looked at her.
“Ask before acting.”
His jaw tightened.
Then he nodded.
The lead federal agent approached.
“Lucian Moretti?”
“Yes.”
“Special Agent Rachel Kim.”
Lucian did not extend his hand.
Camille almost corrected him.
Then decided even she had limits.
Agent Kim showed the warrant.
“We are conducting a search of foundation-controlled areas of the venue and seizing specified records.”
Lucian read it.
“May counsel review this?”
“Yes.”
“Will you allow the event to continue?”
“If it does not interfere with the search.”
Lucian looked at Camille.
She nodded.
He handed the document to his attorney, who had already appeared.
“Cooperate fully.”
Agent Kim seemed almost disappointed by how easy that was.
Camille understood.
She had probably been briefed for a different Lucian too.
The agents moved toward the secondary foundation table.
Guests watched.
Nico looked sick.
“This is going to destroy the night.”
“No,” Camille said.
“How?”
“Because we do not pretend it is not happening.”
She looked at Lucian.
“Go back out.”
His eyes sharpened.
“Now?”
“Yes.”
“While federal agents search the ballroom?”
“Especially now.”
Nico stared.
“She has officially lost her mind.”
Camille ignored him.
“The room is inventing explanations. Give them one.”
“What do I say?”
“The truth you know.”
Lucian looked toward the ballroom.
For perhaps the first time in his adult life, he had no certainty.
No guarantee.
No hidden advantage.
Only a choice about how to behave while everyone watched.
Camille waited.
Lucian straightened his jacket.
Then he walked onto the stage.
The ballroom quieted instantly.
Agent Kim looked up.
Reporters turned.
Lucian took the microphone.
No prepared statement.
No teleprompter.
No intimidation.
“Good evening.”
His voice carried.
“I had not planned to speak tonight.”
A few nervous laughs.
Backstage, Nico whispered, “That is one way to start.”
Lucian continued.
“As many of you can see, federal agents are conducting a lawful search related to allegations involving the foundation.”
The word lawful mattered.
Camille saw Agent Kim glance at him.
“We are cooperating fully.”
A murmur moved through the room.
“I have been advised not to discuss details while the search is active.”
Lucian paused.
Camille watched him breathe.
Old habits would tell him to fill the silence with certainty.
He did not.
“I can tell you this: I will not ask you to ignore what you see tonight. I will not ask you to trust my last name. And I will not insult you by pretending scrutiny is unfair simply because it is inconvenient.”
The room became still.
Camille’s throat tightened.
Lucian looked toward the scholarship students seated near the front.
“If this foundation has done something wrong, it should be found.”
Nico stared.
“If it has not, that should be found too.”
Lucian’s gaze shifted toward the Fulton residents.
“The work does not become less important because the people leading it are questioned.”
He looked toward Camille.
Only for a second.
“Someone recently taught me that respect is behavior, not image.”
A ripple of recognition moved through the room.
Camille felt her face warm.
Lucian continued.
“So our behavior tonight will be simple. We will cooperate. We will answer what we legally can. We will protect private information belonging to the people we serve. And unless authorities tell us otherwise, we will finish this fundraiser.”
Silence.
Then Senator Shaw stood.
She began clapping.
One person joined.
Then another.
The applause grew.
Not wild.
Not blind.
Solid.
Camille looked at Agent Kim.
The agent was watching Lucian differently.
Good.
Not because he had charmed her.
Because he had not made her job harder.
Lucian stepped off the stage.
Nico met him backstage.
“Who are you?”
Lucian looked tired.
“Do not.”
“That was good.”
“I know.”
Camille smiled.
“Arrogance.”
“Evidence.”
She laughed.
The search continued for forty minutes.
Agents photographed the cash and ledger.
They seized the package.
Then Agent Kim asked to speak privately with Lucian.
Camille started to follow.
The agent held up a hand.
“Counsel only.”
Lucian looked at Camille.
For a second, she saw the old instinct.
Keep her close.
Control the variable.
Then he nodded.
“Wait here?”
She smiled.
“Yes.”
He went.
Camille remained with Nico near the service corridor.
Nico paced.
“I hate waiting.”
“You are related.”
“I thought I was the fun one.”
“You are.”
“That does not sound reassuring tonight.”
Camille took his arm.
“Your speech was brave.”
“It was reckless.”
“Those are not mutually exclusive.”
“Lucian said the same thing.”
“That is alarming.”
Nico smiled faintly.
Then his phone buzzed.
Daniel.
Nico showed Camille.
A message.
YOUR BROTHER LOOKS GOOD ON STAGE. LET’S SEE HOW HE LOOKS IN CUFFS.
Camille felt anger rise.
“Do not answer.”
Nico looked at her.
She smiled tightly.
“I am allowed one command.”
He handed her the phone.
A second message arrived.
ASK CAMILLE WHETHER SHE STILL BELIEVES PEOPLE CHANGE.
Camille stared.
Daniel wanted her attention.
He always had.
This was not only about Vale.
Not only about Fulton.
Daniel had built part of the attack around proving Camille wrong.
Years ago, she had ended his contract because he believed manners could imitate character.
He had spent five years becoming more sophisticated without becoming kinder.
Now he wanted evidence that her philosophy was naive.
Powerful men did not change.
They only learned presentation.
Camille typed one sentence.
Then stopped.
Nico looked over.
“What did you write?”
NOT FOR YOU TO DECIDE.
She deleted it.
“No response.”
Nico smiled.
“Growth.”
“Do not.”
Lucian returned with Agent Kim and his attorney.
He was not in handcuffs.
Nico exhaled visibly.
“What happened?” Camille asked.
Lucian’s face was controlled.
“The cash was marked.”
Marco appeared behind them.
“Marked how?”
“Serial numbers linked to a Vantage Urban withdrawal.”
Camille stared.
Agent Kim’s expression did not change.
“That information is not yet confirmed as evidence of wrongdoing by any particular person.”
Lucian looked at Camille.
Translation: promising, not victory.
Good.
“What about the ledger?” Nico asked.
“Preliminary review shows formatting inconsistent with foundation records.”
Camille nearly laughed from relief.
Agent Kim continued.
“However, the warrant includes seizure of several financial servers. We will need cooperation tonight.”
Lucian nodded.
“You have it.”
The agent studied him.
Then said, “For what it is worth, Mr. Moretti, whoever arranged the package may have expected a different response.”
Camille smiled.
Lucian glanced at her.
“I have been told I am improving.”
Agent Kim’s mouth almost moved.
She left.
Nico stared at his brother.
“You made a joke to a federal agent.”
“I am aware.”
Camille placed a hand over her heart.
“Advanced course complete.”
“Do not become sentimental.”
Too late.
The gala resumed.
Not normally.
Nothing about the evening was normal.
But something remarkable happened.
Guests stayed.
Not all.
Some left quietly.
But most remained.
The auction reopened for three final items.
A construction company increased its housing pledge.
A university doubled the number of scholarship matches.
Senator Shaw announced a personal donation to the resident legal fund.
By eleven, the foundation had surpassed its target.
Camille stared at the total.
Nico laughed.
“They tried to kill the gala and raised us more money.”
“Do not celebrate yet,” Lucian said.
“Let me have one minute.”
Lucian looked at his brother.
Then nodded.
“One.”
Nico hugged him.
Lucian tolerated it.
Barely.
At eleven twenty, Marco received another call.
His expression changed.
“Police located Daniel.”
Camille’s pulse jumped.
“Where?”
“Vantage Urban headquarters.”
Lucian’s eyes hardened.
“Vale?”
“Not there.”
“What about Daniel?”
“Leaving with luggage.”
Nico laughed without humor.
“Hiding.”
Camille remembered Elise’s warning.
After Friday, Lucian will either be in handcuffs or hiding.
Daniel had planned for one of them to run.
It was him.
Lucian took one step.
Then stopped.
Camille watched.
He looked at Marco.
“Let the police handle it.”
The words cost him.
That made them more important.
Marco nodded.
Camille’s eyes filled.
Lucian noticed.
“What?”
“Nothing.”
“You are emotional.”
“Do not ruin it.”
A smile touched his mouth.
Then Marco’s phone buzzed again.
He read the message.
“Daniel is in custody.”
Nico exhaled.
Camille closed her eyes.
“Vale?”
Marco’s expression hardened.
“Gone.”
Lucian looked toward the ballroom doors.
“Where?”
“No one knows.”
Camille opened her eyes.
The gala had survived.
Daniel had been caught.
May you like
But Adrian Vale—the man behind the larger plan—had disappeared.
And somewhere in Chicago, a man who had lost control of his story was deciding what to do next.
