Chapter 10 - What Grant Had Already Signed

The police found no forced entry.
That meant whoever entered the penthouse either had a key, had been admitted, or knew enough about the building to bypass normal security.
Grant denied everything.
Victoria did too.
By Tuesday morning, my life had become a headline.
WHITAKER MERIDIAN CEO PLACED ON LEAVE.
FAMILY ASSET DISPUTE ROCKS BILLION-DOLLAR FIRM.
I stopped reading.
Rachel didn't.
“Public pressure matters.”
“So does blood pressure.”
She took my phone away.
“Fair.”
I relocated temporarily to a hotel under another name.
Not because I believed Grant would hurt me.
Because I no longer knew what to believe.
Lena disappeared.
Martin entered negotiations with investigators.
Victoria hired three law firms.
Grant sent flowers.
I sent them back.
Then he sent a letter.
I didn't open it.
Rachel did.
“He wants to meet.”
“No.”
“He says he can explain.”
“He had eight years.”
“He claims Victoria manipulated the transactions.”
That got my attention.
“Of course he does.”
“He also says Northstar wasn't his idea.”
“Do you believe him?”
“No.”
“Neither do I.”
Rachel hesitated.
“But we found something.”
She opened her laptop.
A document appeared.
Personal guarantee.
Signed by Grant Whitaker.
Dated nine months earlier.
The guarantee tied Grant personally to an enormous company obligation.
“If Whitaker Meridian defaults,” Rachel said, “Grant could lose almost everything.”
“How much?”
“His liquid personal assets won't cover it.”
“Then why take the risk?”
“He thought the company would recover.”
“And when it didn't?”
“He used my assets.”
“Yes.”
I stared at the signature.
Grant's real signature.
Strong.
Confident.
He had already signed away his own safety before he began stealing mine.
Then Rachel opened another document.
A side letter.
This one involved Victoria.
“She guaranteed part of it too.”
“So they're both trapped.”
“Yes.”
“And my signature was their escape.”
“Yes.”
I leaned back.
The cruelty suddenly became ordinary.
Not a grand conspiracy.
Not some brilliant master plan.
Fear.
Greed.
Desperation.
Grant had built an empire on being the smartest person in every room.
Then the numbers turned against him.
Instead of accepting failure, he decided my future was expendable.
“What about Lena?”
Rachel looked uncomfortable.
“What?”
“We found payments.”
“To her?”
“Yes.”
“How much?”
“Three million.”
My chest tightened.
“For the affair?”
“Maybe not.”
Rachel showed me the dates.
The first payment happened before Lena claimed the affair began.
“She lied.”
“About something.”
I called Lena.
No answer.
Again.
Nothing.
Then a text arrived.
I'm sorry.
I typed:
For what?
No response.
At noon, Paul called from the theater.
“Mrs. Whitaker, there's something you should see.”
Security footage.
Friday night.
Before Grant arrived with Lena.
Lena had entered the theater alone.
She went upstairs.
Into an administrative corridor.
She met someone.
Victoria.
My mother-in-law had been inside my theater less than an hour before her son arrived with his mistress.
The coincidence was impossible.
“What were they doing?” I asked.
Paul changed cameras.
Victoria handed Lena an envelope.
Lena opened it.
Then shook her head.
They argued.
Finally Lena took it.
Three million dollars.
An engagement-looking diamond.
A secret meeting.
Suddenly I understood.
The ring might truly have been payment.
But payment for what?
Rachel called Lena again.
This time she answered.
“Tell her,” I said.
Rachel put the phone on speaker.
“Lena, we have footage of you with Victoria.”
Silence.
Then crying.
“I didn't want this.”
“What did she pay you for?” I asked.
“She hired me before Grant and I ever slept together.”
“To do what?”
“Watch him.”
“Why?”
“Because she knew he was losing control.”
My skin prickled.
“Of the company?”
“Yes.”
“And then?”
“She wanted proof.”
“Proof of what?”
“That Grant was moving money without her approval.”
Rachel and I exchanged looks.
Victoria wasn't simply helping Grant.
She had been spying on him.
“Then why help with Northstar?”
“She wasn't helping him.”
Lena's voice cracked.
“She was preparing to take the company from him.”
Everything shifted.
Grant had been stealing from me to save his empire.
Victoria had been building Northstar to seize that empire from Grant.
And Lena had been working both sides.
“What was the diamond for?”
“Silence.”
“About what?”
Lena began crying harder.
“The baby.”
My entire body went cold.
“What about my baby?”
A long silence.
Then Lena whispered:
“Grant ordered a private investigation before you got pregnant.”
“Into what?”
“Into your father's trust.”
“Why?”
“Because there is a clause nobody told him about.”
I gripped the phone.
“What clause?”
“If you have a child, control of a major portion of the family holdings eventually passes through you to that child.”
My daughter.
Grant wasn't merely losing access to my assets.
Once she was born, some structures became even harder for him to reach.
The pregnancy hadn't created his plan.
It had accelerated it.
And suddenly his words from the theater returned.
The baby will be taken care of.
I had thought they sounded cold.
May you like
Now they sounded like something else.
A deadline.
