Chapter 11 - The Secret in the Moretti Name

Dominic read the letter alone.

Mara knew immediately something was wrong.

“What happened?”

He handed it to her.

The DNA report suggested Dominic had a half-brother.

Antonio admitted the truth that evening.

Decades earlier, before marrying Sofia, he had fathered a child with a woman named Elena Russo.

He had provided money but never publicly acknowledged the boy.

“His name is Luca,” Antonio said.

Dominic’s expression was unreadable.

“You knew?”

“Yes.”

“For thirty-seven years?”

“Yes.”

Sofia sat silently.

Mara looked at her.

“You knew too?”

Sofia nodded.

Dominic stood.

“I need air.”

Mara followed him outside but stopped several feet away.

He looked at her.

“You can come closer.”

She did.

“I spent my life believing my father valued family above everything.”

“People can value something and still fail it.”

Dominic laughed bitterly.

“Is that from experience?”

“Yes.”

He looked at her.

Mara took his hand.

They found Luca two weeks later.

He wasn’t seeking money.

He owned a small restaurant outside Boston.

“I sent the letter,” Luca admitted.

“Why now?” Dominic asked.

“Because our father is getting older.”

Antonio flinched at our.

Luca continued.

“And because I was tired of existing as a secret.”

Mara understood that sentence more than anyone.

Dominic did too.

There was no instant embrace.

No miraculous reconciliation.

Just uncomfortable truth.

But truth was a beginning.

Dominic invited Luca to the wedding.

Luca hesitated.

Then accepted.

The story leaked.

Reporters descended.

Headlines called it a Moretti family scandal.

Dominic refused to hide.

At a press conference he said only:

“My brother did nothing wrong by existing. Questions about decisions made before either of us could control them should be directed toward the people who made those decisions.”

Mara watched from backstage.

When Dominic finished, she kissed him.

“What?”

“You opened his door.”

Dominic understood.

He smiled.

The phrase became private shorthand between them.

Open the door.

Make room.

Don’t hide people because their existence complicates your presentation.

The wedding date approached.

Mara chose the Moretti estate.

Not because it was grand.

Because she wanted to rewrite the memory.

She chose emerald accents.

Her mother objected gently.

“Green again?”

“Especially green.”

Dominic approved.

“Definitely green.”

The guest list included employees, Bellweather residents, investors, family, and people from the career-return program.

Grant received an invitation.

He called Mara.

“You’re serious?”

“Yes.”

“Dominic agreed?”

“He suggested it.”

Grant was silent.

“He’s a strange man.”

“You have no idea.”

The night before the wedding, Mara stood alone in the driveway.

Rain began.

Exactly like the gala.

She closed her eyes.

Two years earlier, she had stood there crying beside a dead phone.

Now the mansion behind her was filled with people celebrating her.

Dominic approached.

“You’re supposed to be avoiding me.”

“I’ve never respected that tradition.”

“You respect almost no traditions.”

“Efficient.”

Mara looked toward the gates.

“Do you ever think about that night?”

“Every day.”

“Why?”

“Because I almost stayed in the car.”

Dominic frowned.

“Your car?”

“My sedan. I had just finished a phone call. I was tired. I considered leaving through the private gate.”

Mara stared.

“If you had…”

“I know.”

She took his hand.

“Funny.”

“What?”

“Grant thought leaving me outside would protect his future.”

Dominic looked at her.

“And instead?”

“It gave me mine.”

They kissed beneath the rain.

But from an upstairs window, Sofia Moretti watched them with tears in her eyes.

Because she had a secret of her own.

One she had kept since the first night she met Mara.

May you like

And before the wedding began, she intended to tell her.
