Chapter 14 - The Woman Who Had Helped Him Betray Me

Britney asked to meet again.

This time, I agreed.

We sat in a private room at the federal courthouse.

She had changed.

Less frightened.

More ashamed.

“I’m going to plead guilty,” she said.

“To what?”

“Fraud. Conspiracy.”

“Why tell me?”

“I don’t know.”

“Yes, you do.”

She looked down.

“I want you to know I’m not pretending I was innocent.”

That mattered.

Not enough for forgiveness.

But enough for truth.

“Did you ever hate me?”

She looked surprised.

“No.”

“Then how did you do it?”

Her eyes filled.

“Because I didn’t think about you as a real person.”

The answer hit me.

She continued.

“Vale called you an asset holder. My father called you Daniel’s girl. Bradley called you complicated.”

I almost laughed.

“I was pregnant in front of you.”

“I know.”

“You came to my house.”

“I know.”

“You touched my belly at the Christmas party.”

Britney covered her face.

“I know.”

I stared at her.

“That’s what I can’t understand.”

“I can’t either.”

Finally, she lowered her hands.

“I got very good at dividing myself into pieces. What I did for Vale was one piece. What I did with Bradley was another. You were somewhere outside all of them.”

“That’s convenient.”

“It was.”

I respected that she didn’t ask forgiveness.

She gave me information instead.

Bradley had resisted the final divorce scheme.

Not enough to stop it.

But enough that Vale threatened him.

The insurance cancellation had been Bradley’s idea.

That surprised me.

“Why?”

Britney looked ashamed.

“He wanted to create financial panic.”

“To make me sign faster.”

“Yes.”

So even his worst act hadn’t been ordered.

That mattered too.

I needed to know exactly what belonged to Bradley.

Not blame everything on larger villains.

He had made choices.

At trial, those choices would matter.

And in my healing, they mattered even more.

Arthur Bellini was charged with conspiracy, financial crimes, obstruction, and offenses connected to my father’s death.

Thomas faced separate charges.

Vale cooperated in exchange for consideration.

Britney cooperated too.

Bradley pled guilty to multiple financial charges.

The newspapers turned everything into headlines.

BILLIONAIRE HEIRESS DISCOVERED AFTER HOSPITAL DRAMA

I hated that one.

I hadn’t been “discovered.”

I had been alive the whole time.

People simply hadn’t cared who I was until money made the story interesting.

So I stopped reading articles.

I focused on my sons.

Eli reached four pounds.

Then four and a half.

Noah followed more slowly.

One afternoon, a nurse placed both boys against my chest.

For the first time, I held them together.

I cried so hard I laughed.

Dominic stood in the hallway.

“Come in,” I said.

He entered cautiously.

“Meet your great-nephews properly.”

“Which one is which?”

“That’s Eli.”

He pointed.

“Noah.”

“Wrong.”

He frowned.

I laughed.

For the first time since the hospital nightmare began, it was real laughter.

Dominic smiled.

“You did that on purpose.”

“Maybe.”

He looked at the babies.

“Your father would—”

He stopped himself.

I noticed.

“What?”

“You told me not to speak for dead people.”

I smiled.

“Good memory.”

He nodded toward the twins.

“Then I’ll speak for myself.”

He touched Eli’s tiny foot.

“I’m glad they’re here.”

That was enough.

The next day, Noah had another apnea episode.

Then another.

Doctors changed his treatment.

I sat beside him all night.

At three in the morning, I realized something.

I had spent weeks chasing truth because I thought once every secret was uncovered, I would feel safe.

But safety didn’t work that way.

There would always be risk.

Illness.

Loss.

People making choices I couldn’t control.

The goal wasn’t to eliminate uncertainty.

It was to build a life where uncertainty didn’t make me surrender myself.

That was the life I wanted for my sons.

Not wealth.

Not power.

Choice.

And to give them that, I needed to make one decision about Bradley.

Would I erase him completely?

Or allow him, someday, to earn a place in their lives?

I didn’t have the answer.

May you like

Then Noah’s monitor alarm sounded.

And every philosophical thought disappeared.
