Chapter 7 - His New Wife Wanted Everything I OwnedThe first article appeared at 7:03 the next morning.

Its headline was carefully designed to provoke curiosity.
THE SECRET FORTUNE BEHIND A HIGH-PROFILE DIVORCE: DID CLAIRE BENNETT HIDE HER EMPIRE FROM HER OWN HUSBAND?
My phone began ringing before I finished breakfast.
Eleanor called first.
"Have you seen it?"
"I'm reading it."
The article quoted an unnamed source close to Daniel and Vanessa.
According to that source, I had maintained a secret corporate empire while encouraging my husband to believe I was financially dependent.
It suggested that my divorce settlement raised serious questions about transparency.
It also described Vanessa as a woman unexpectedly caught in a complicated financial controversy.
I put down my coffee.
"Vanessa."
Eleanor sighed.
"Almost certainly."
"Has Daniel commented?"
"Not publicly."
"What about the reporter?"
"Miriam is reviewing the article now."
I reopened the webpage.
The final paragraph quoted the anonymous source again.
Claire Bennett carefully constructed the appearance of an ordinary wife. Her reasons for concealing such extraordinary wealth deserve scrutiny.
I almost admired the audacity.
For years, Daniel had dismissed my businesses whenever I mentioned them.
Now Vanessa was attempting to turn his indifference into my deception.
By lunchtime, the article had been shared across several business gossip pages.
People who had never met me developed strong opinions about my marriage.
Some accused me of manipulating Daniel.
Others wondered how an executive could remain unaware of his wife's professional identity for twelve years.
A few asked the only sensible question.
Hadn't he read his divorce documents?
That comment made Eleanor laugh.
"Someone wrote, 'He didn't lose his wife's fortune. He lost interest in his wife before realizing she had one.'"
I smiled despite myself.
"Don't read comments all afternoon."
"Too late."
Miriam arrived carrying a folder.
"The article includes several factual inaccuracies," she said. "We're requesting corrections and preserving evidence of the source's communications."
"Do we respond publicly?"
"Not emotionally."
"Agreed."
"We can issue a short statement confirming that your corporate interests were properly disclosed during the divorce process, without publishing confidential settlement details."
I nodded.
"Do that."
Miriam sat opposite me.
"Claire, Vanessa may not stop."
"Why?"
"Because this isn't simply about money."
I looked up.
"Then what is it?"
"She spent months building her identity around being chosen over you. Your success makes that victory feel less impressive."
I considered that.
Vanessa hadn't merely wanted Daniel.
She had wanted to replace me.
His wife.
His social partner.
The woman beside him in photographs.
She assumed acquiring the position meant acquiring everything associated with it.
Now she was learning that much of what she envied had never belonged to Daniel.
That afternoon, Vanessa contacted me directly.
I recognized her number.
I had seen it on Daniel's phone too many times to forget.
Against my better judgment, I answered.
"Claire."
"Vanessa."
She sounded surprised.
"I didn't think you'd pick up."
"Neither did I."
A brief silence.
Then she said, "I think we should meet."
"Why?"
"Because this situation is becoming unpleasant for everyone."
"It became unpleasant when you began sleeping with my husband."
Her voice sharpened.
"Daniel made his own decisions."
"Yes. He did."
"Look, I don't want to fight."
"Then stop spreading inaccurate information."
"I didn't write that article."
"Of course."
She exhaled dramatically.
"Claire, you have fourteen companies. You have more money than you could possibly need."
I waited.
"And?"
"Daniel is struggling."
"That sounds like something he should discuss with his financial officer."
"He's your ex-husband."
"Correct."
"You spent twelve years together."
"Also correct."
"Don't you think you owe him some consideration?"
I leaned back.
"Vanessa, what exactly are you asking for?"
Her voice changed.
It became sweeter.
More deliberate.
"I think you should transfer the Meridian financing relationship to another institution and personally guarantee his outstanding obligations until the company stabilizes."
I stared at the phone.
Then I laughed.
I couldn't help it.
Vanessa went silent.
"Did I say something funny?"
"You married Daniel yesterday."
"And?"
"And you're already calling his former wife to ask her to finance your marriage."
"That's not what this is!"
"Then what is it?"
She lowered her voice.
"Think carefully, Claire. You wouldn't want more stories coming out."
There it was.
The real purpose of the call.
"Are you threatening me?"
"I'm encouraging cooperation."
"Then I encourage you to speak with an attorney before contacting me again."
I ended the call.
I forwarded a summary of the conversation to Miriam.
She called within minutes.
"Did she explicitly threaten publication?"
"She implied it."
"Document everything you remember."
I did.
Then I returned to work.
There were supplier negotiations to review, an employee benefits proposal to approve, and an acquisition presentation requiring my attention.
For the first time, I understood how deeply Daniel and Vanessa resented my ability to continue functioning without them.
They wanted me emotionally trapped in their marriage.
Instead, I was preparing to expand my own business.
That evening, Daniel called Vanessa into his study.
"Did you contact Claire?"
She looked up from her phone.
"Why?"
"Answer me."
"I tried to help."
"What did you say?"
"That she should stop pretending she doesn't care what happens to us."
Daniel stared.
"Us?"
"Yes, Daniel. Your problems affect me now. We're married."
He rubbed his forehead.
"Please tell me you didn't ask her for money."
Vanessa's silence answered him.
He closed his eyes.
"You don't understand what you've done."
"Oh, I understand perfectly. She made a fool out of both of us."
"No. I made a fool out of myself."
Vanessa recoiled.
"What?"
Daniel looked toward the window.
He remembered Claire sitting through long dinners while he boasted.
He remembered mocking her questions.
He remembered telling investors that his wife preferred shopping to strategy.
For the first time, he recognized the difference between what Claire had concealed and what he had refused to see.
Vanessa wasn't interested.
She opened her laptop.
"Fine. If Claire won't cooperate privately, we'll make sure people understand exactly what kind of woman she is."
Daniel turned sharply.
"Stop."
But Vanessa had already sent another message to the journalist.
This time, she claimed to possess documents.
May you like
And those documents, if published without proper context, could damage far more than my reputation.
They involved my father's estate.
