Chapter 16 - The Birthday Box

I nearly sent it back.

Then I saw the label.

For Claire. Open on Lily’s sixth birthday.

Inside was no letter from Daniel.

There were videos.

Dozens.

Daniel had backed up old phone recordings before leaving.

Lily at one.

Lily at two.

Lily dancing in the kitchen.

Lily asleep on his chest.

Lily shouting, “Mommy!”

I watched for hours.

Andrew watched beside me.

Then came one video I had never seen.

Daniel was filming Lily in the backyard.

She was three.

“What do you want to be when you grow up?” he asked.

“A doctor.”

“Why?”

“So nobody gets sick.”

Daniel laughed gently.

“That’s a big job.”

Lily considered this.

“Then I be a princess doctor.”

I laughed through tears.

The final file was Daniel.

Recorded recently.

I almost stopped it.

Then he spoke.

“Claire, I’m not sending this because I expect anything.”

He looked older.

“I found these backups and realized they belong to you.”

He paused.

“I used to think the worst thing that happened to me was losing Lily.”

His eyes lowered.

“That isn’t true. The worst thing is knowing I abandoned her when she needed me.”

He breathed slowly.

“I can’t change that.”

Then:

“But I hope you remember the days when I did love her well too.”

The screen went dark.

That sentence stayed with me.

Because it was true.

Daniel failed Lily catastrophically.

But before that, he had also carried her when she was tired.

Made pancakes.

Read stories.

Built half a cardboard castle.

Human beings resist simple categories.

Monster.

Saint.

Victim.

Villain.

Sometimes a person can love you and still fail you beyond repair.

Accepting that did not excuse Daniel.

It simply returned my memories to me.

I no longer had to throw away every happy moment because of the terrible ending.

That night, I watched Lily dancing again.

Then again.

May you like

And I smiled.

Three years after I had believed my life ended beside a hospital bed, I finally realized memory could be a home instead of a prison.
