Chapter 12 - The Ledger in Clem’s Office

Eda escaped through the roof.

Barely.

She returned with the ledger.

Mabel compared it to her copied pages.

Perfect match.

Names.

Payments.

Harland's signatures.

Clem's payments.

Pike's routes.

Everything.

But Silas had been arrested while Eda was gone.

Harland moved quickly.

He placed Silas in the town jail and announced an attempted escape would justify deadly force.

Everyone understood the message.

Silas was supposed to die before the federal marshal arrived.

Eda refused.

At noon she walked into town carrying the ledger.

Seven women followed.

Then Clara.

Margaret.

Nine rescued women.

Then Mrs. Talbot.

The blacksmith.

The preacher.

Ranchers.

Workers.

Families.

Dozens.

Harland stepped onto the courthouse stairs.

“Disperse.”

Nobody moved.

Eda lifted the ledger.

“You wanted this?”

Harland stared.

“Here it is.”

He ordered deputies forward.

Amos appeared.

Then came another sound.

Horses.

A federal marshal rode into town with six officers.

Harland's face changed.

For the first time, Eda saw fear.

She smiled faintly.

“You should have bid eight dollars.”

The marshal took custody of the ledger.

Silas was released.

Harland was detained.

Clem was transferred to federal custody.

But the case wasn't over.

Because powerful men had names inside that book.

And powerful men rarely surrendered quietly.
