Chapter 3 - When the Smile Disappeared

Alexander did not rush.

He wanted to.

Every step through the service corridor demanded restraint.

His pulse hammered.

His jaw ached from clenching it.

But Alexander knew one thing about people who manipulated others for a living.

They revealed more when they believed they were still in control.

So he walked slowly.

Quietly.

The mansion looked different now.

Nothing physical had changed.

Same pale marble.

Same chandeliers.

Same fresh flowers arranged by the entrance.

Same enormous windows overlooking Los Angeles.

But Alexander no longer saw his home.

He saw hiding places.

Blind spots.

Rooms where his daughters had learned rules he had never created.

He reached the main hallway.

Voices drifted from the living room.

Chloe.

Marisol.

Alexander stopped before they could see him.

“I want your belongings packed by tonight.”

Marisol’s voice remained steady.

“Mr. Vance hired me.”

“I’m going to be Mrs. Vance.”

“You are not yet.”

Silence.

Then Chloe laughed.

“That sounded almost disrespectful.”

“I’m only stating the truth.”

“You want the truth?”

Chloe lowered her voice.

“The truth is Alexander barely notices what happens in this house. He notices quarterly earnings, acquisitions, airports, lawyers, meetings. He doesn’t notice the people standing directly in front of him.”

Alexander closed his eyes.

The words hurt because part of them was true.

He had missed things.

Too many things.

Marisol answered.

“He notices his daughters.”

“No. He loves his daughters. That’s different.”

Alexander opened his eyes.

Chloe continued.

“Love doesn’t make a man observant.”

“Then perhaps you should not underestimate him.”

Chloe scoffed.

“Alexander believes what makes sense to him. Give him evidence and he’ll believe the evidence.”

The velvet pouch.

Marisol’s locker.

Alexander understood.

Chloe was not merely lying.

She had studied him.

She knew how he thought.

She knew he trusted documentation, patterns, tangible proof.

So she had manufactured proof.

“You put those things in my room,” Marisol said.

Alexander froze.

Chloe did not answer immediately.

Then—

“Be very careful.”

“I found the perfume bottle three weeks ago.”

“Then why didn’t you tell Alexander?”

“Because I did not know who put it there.”

“And now?”

“Now I do.”

Alexander heard footsteps.

He moved behind a column just before Chloe entered the hallway.

Her face was completely different from the one she wore around him.

Her mouth tight.

Eyes cold.

Marisol followed several feet behind.

Chloe turned.

“You have no idea what you’re involving yourself in.”

Marisol said nothing.

“You think because those girls love you, you’re protected?”

“I don’t need protection from you.”

“You should.”

Alexander stepped into view.

“From what?”

Chloe stopped.

Marisol’s face went white.

For one second, no one moved.

Then Chloe transformed.

Alexander watched it happen.

The coldness disappeared.

Her shoulders softened.

Her eyes widened.

Concern replaced hostility.

“Alec?”

Alexander nearly admired the speed of it.

Nearly.

“What are you doing here?”

He walked closer.

“My meeting was canceled.”

Chloe smiled uncertainly.

“You should have called. I would’ve—”

“Prepared?”

The smile weakened.

“What?”

Alexander glanced toward Marisol.

“Where are the girls?”

“Upstairs,” Marisol replied.

Chloe interrupted.

“They were misbehaving.”

Alexander looked at her.

“How?”

“They were being disrespectful.”

“What did they do?”

Chloe hesitated.

Alexander waited.

“Well?”

“They ignored me.”

“So you took Sofia’s rabbit.”

Something flickered across Chloe’s face.

Not guilt.

Calculation.

“How do you know that?”

Alexander said nothing.

Chloe looked toward the ceiling.

Toward the corners.

Then back at him.

Understanding arrived slowly.

“The cameras.”

Alexander watched her.

“You knew we had cameras.”

“Security cameras.”

“Yes.”

“You were watching me?”

“I was watching my home.”

“You were spying on me.”

“You planted your bracelet in Marisol’s locker.”

Marisol inhaled softly.

Chloe’s eyes widened.

“That’s ridiculous.”

“I watched you do it.”

“I can explain.”

“I’m listening.”

Chloe looked toward Marisol.

“Not in front of her.”

Alexander’s expression hardened.

“You were comfortable accusing her when she wasn’t present.”

“Alec—”

“Explain.”

Chloe folded her arms.

“Fine. I put the bracelet there.”

Marisol stared.

Alexander said nothing.

“But not for the reason you think.”

“What reason would improve this?”

“I was testing her.”

Alexander actually laughed once.

There was no humor in it.

“Testing her.”

“I suspected she’d been going through my things. I wanted to see whether she would take something valuable if the opportunity appeared.”

“You placed your bracelet inside her locked locker.”

“I—”

“That is not an opportunity, Chloe.”

She looked frustrated.

“You’re twisting this.”

“I’m repeating what happened.”

“She has been manipulating those girls against me.”

Alexander’s voice became very quiet.

“Valeria is nine.”

“That doesn’t mean she can’t be influenced.”

“You asked Valeria about the archive in my office.”

Chloe’s face changed again.

This time the mask did not return fast enough.

Alexander saw fear.

Real fear.

“Who told you that?”

“My cameras.”

“That’s private.”

“My office is private.”

“Alec, listen—”

“What were you looking for?”

“Nothing.”

“What were you looking for?”

“Nothing!”

Her voice echoed through the hallway.

Marisol remained still.

Alexander looked at her.

“Go upstairs.”

“Mr. Vance—”

“Please. Stay with the girls.”

Marisol hesitated.

Then nodded.

As she walked toward the stairs, Chloe spoke behind her.

“Of course. Run back to them.”

Alexander turned instantly.

“That’s enough.”

Marisol continued upstairs without responding.

Chloe stared at him.

“So now you’re defending her.”

“I’m defending my daughters.”

“From me?”

“Yes.”

The word landed between them.

Chloe looked stunned.

Alexander had never spoken to her like that.

“You don’t mean that.”

“I watched Sofia flinch before you even touched her toy.”

Chloe looked away.

“I watched Valeria move in front of her sister.”

“Alec—”

“I watched them hold hands like they had rehearsed what to do when you became angry.”

“They’re dramatic children.”

Alexander stepped closer.

“No.”

His voice broke slightly.

“They’re frightened children.”

Chloe’s expression hardened again.

“You’re going to throw away everything we have over fifteen minutes of footage?”

“No.”

Alexander looked toward the staircase.

“I’m going to find out what happened during every minute I wasn’t here.”

Chloe crossed her arms.

“And then?”

“Then we’ll talk about the wedding.”

For the first time, she looked truly afraid.

Alexander noticed.

Good.

Because fear meant there was more.

Hector appeared at the end of the hallway.

“Mr. Vance.”

Alexander turned.

Hector rarely interrupted him.

“What?”

“I found something.”

Chloe immediately looked toward him.

“What did you find?”

Hector ignored her.

Alexander saw it.

The reaction.

Too fast.

Too interested.

“What is it?”

Hector walked closer and lowered his voice.

“Archived footage from two weeks ago. North office corridor.”

Alexander frowned.

“I was in Seattle.”

“Yes.”

Hector handed him a tablet.

The footage showed the corridor outside Alexander’s home office.

Time stamp: 1:47 a.m.

A figure approached.

Chloe.

She wore a robe.

Barefoot.

She looked behind her.

Then removed something from her pocket.

A key.

Alexander’s key.

His private office key.

She unlocked the door and went inside.

Alexander’s blood turned cold.

“I never gave her that.”

Hector nodded.

“She remained inside eleven minutes.”

The video jumped.

Chloe emerged.

She held a folder against her chest.

A blue folder.

Alexander recognized it.

Elena’s trust documents.

Chloe saw recognition on his face.

“Alec.”

He looked at her.

“What did you take?”

“Nothing.”

“The folder.”

“I put it back.”

“What did you take from it?”

“Nothing.”

“Then why did you enter my office at two in the morning?”

She said nothing.

Alexander handed the tablet back to Hector.

“Check the archive.”

Hector nodded.

Chloe stepped forward.

“Alec, don’t do this.”

Alexander stared at her.

“Do what?”

“Turn this into something it isn’t.”

He thought about Sofia looking toward the shelf.

Valeria saying, We lose things.

The bracelet planted in Marisol’s locker.

The questions about Elena’s documents.

Then he thought about Chloe telling him suspicion should make him open his eyes.

Maybe she had been right.

Just not in the way she intended.

Alexander moved toward his office.

Chloe followed.

“Alec.”

He kept walking.

“If you go through those papers without letting me explain—”

Alexander stopped so suddenly she nearly collided with him.

He turned.

“That sentence tells me there is something to explain.”

Chloe became silent.

Alexander unlocked the office.

Crossed to the fireproof archive.

Entered the code.

Opened it.

The blue folder sat exactly where it should.

For half a second, relief washed over him.

Then he removed it.

Opened the binder.

The first pages appeared normal.

Estate structure.

Life insurance.

Elena’s letters.

Guardianship documents.

Then Alexander reached the section governing the girls’ inheritance.

One page was missing.

He stared at the empty space.

Hector stepped closer.

“What was there?”

Alexander looked up.

“A provision Elena added before she died.”

“What did it say?”

Alexander swallowed.

“If I remarried while the girls were minors, their inheritance remained independently controlled.”

Chloe stood in the doorway.

Her face had become unreadable.

“Controlled by whom?” Hector asked.

Alexander did not look away from Chloe.

“Not by my future spouse.”

Silence filled the office.

Hector’s gaze moved toward Chloe.

Alexander closed the folder.

Slowly.

“Now,” he said, “I really want to know what you were looking for.”

May you like

And the expression on Chloe’s face told him the missing page was only the beginning.
