Chapter 9 - The Woman Who Sent Evelyn

Mrs. Chen had vanished six hours before federal agents reached her apartment.
Her phone remained on the kitchen counter.
Passport in a drawer.
Suitcase untouched.
That meant either someone had taken her unexpectedly or she'd prepared an escape so carefully she intended investigators to find nothing.
Damien preferred the second possibility.
At least it meant she was alive long enough to answer questions.
Evelyn stared at the photograph recovered from the apartment.
It showed her leaving a grocery store two months before the agency placement.
"They were watching me."
Agent Bell nodded.
"Probably."
"Why?"
"We believe Vale thought Thomas Mercer had contacted you."
"He hadn't."
"He may not have known."
Damien tapped the message.
SHE KNOWS WHERE.
"Where what?"
"The ledger?" Adrian suggested.
Evelyn shook her head.
"If they believed I knew where the ledger was, why place me here?"
"To make you search for it," Damien said.
Everyone looked at him.
"Think about it. Vale knew my father's instructions existed but not exactly what they said. He knew Evelyn was Mercer's daughter. He places her inside my household."
"Then watches what I do," Evelyn finished.
"If you suddenly started investigating Bellemont, they'd know."
Agent Bell nodded slowly.
"The attempted intrusion may have been designed to force movement."
Evelyn folded her arms.
"Except I never searched Bellemont."
"Until after the attack."
Damien looked grim.
"They created the reaction they needed."
Adrian swore quietly.
The realization changed the investigation.
They had not been responding to random events.
They had been following a trail someone intentionally built.
Vale wanted Bellemont opened.
Evelyn wanted answers.
Damien wanted his sons protected.
All three desires had pushed them toward the same house.
But Vale hadn't anticipated Lucas's recording.
He hadn't anticipated Evelyn's training.
And he certainly hadn't anticipated Thomas Mercer still being alive.
Mrs. Chen became the remaining loose end.
The children, meanwhile, faced a different problem.
They were afraid to return to ordinary life.
Theo refused to sleep alone.
Lucas asked for security details before going downstairs.
When the elevator chimed, both boys looked toward Evelyn.
Damien noticed.
So did she.
That afternoon Evelyn asked him to remove the guards from inside the main living room.
"No."
"They're making it worse."
"They're keeping everyone alive."
"They're making Lucas count guns instead of windows."
Damien frowned.
"He shouldn't be counting either."
"Exactly."
"What are you suggesting?"
"Visible normality. Invisible security."
He hated the idea.
Which increasingly meant she was probably right.
They compromised.
Guards remained on the floor but outside the family rooms.
Camera alerts became silent.
Emergency drills stopped temporarily.
For three days, Evelyn did something she hadn't done since arriving.
She behaved only like a nanny.
They baked cookies.
They built the largest wooden fortress Theo had ever attempted.
They watched an animated movie.
Lucas complained it was childish while knowing every song.
Damien worked from home.
Occasionally he looked up from his laptop and found himself listening to Evelyn laugh.
Something about the sound changed the penthouse.
Celeste's absence had transformed the home into a carefully maintained waiting room.
Beautiful.
Expensive.
Quiet.
Evelyn made it messy.
Theo's socks appeared under sofas.
Flour landed on marble counters.
Lucas left books open.
Life returned.
On the fourth evening, Damien found Evelyn on the terrace alone.
"Cold?"
"No."
"It is."
"I'm from Pennsylvania."
"That's not immunity."
He handed her a coat.
She accepted.
Below them the city glittered.
"Thomas is staying?" Damien asked.
"For now."
"How are you?"
"Complicated."
"That's not an emotion."
"It's seventeen emotions wearing one coat."
Damien smiled.
"I understand."
She looked toward him.
"Do you?"
"More than I want to."
Silence.
Then she asked, "What happens to Vincent?"
"Federal charges."
"You could protect him."
"I could."
"Will you?"
"No."
Evelyn nodded.
"Even though he tried to protect your sons."
"He endangered them first."
"Fair."
"Would you protect your father if he broke the law?"
The question surprised her.
"I don't know."
"That's honest."
"I've had forty-eight hours to get used to him being alive. I'm not ready for moral hypotheticals."
Damien laughed.
Her shoulder brushed his.
Neither moved.
Then Adrian called.
Mrs. Chen had used an emergency credit card.
Gas station.
One hundred seventeen miles south.
Security footage showed her alone.
Terrified.
She purchased water and asked the cashier for paper.
Then she wrote something and left it inside the restroom.
Police recovered the note.
Agent Bell sent a photograph.
Evelyn read aloud.
I DID NOT KNOW THEY WOULD HURT THE CHILDREN.
I SENT HER BECAUSE RICHARD TOLD ME TO.
Damien stared.
"Richard?"
His father again.
Below that were more words.
ASK THOMAS ABOUT PROJECT HARBOR.
Evelyn turned toward the guest wing where her father was staying.
Thomas was awake when they entered.
One look at their faces and he knew.
"What happened?"
Damien placed the note down.
Thomas read it.
Then closed his eyes.
"You know Project Harbor," Evelyn said.
Thomas nodded.
"What is it?"
He looked at Damien.
"Your father's escape plan."
"For what?"
"For you."
Damien frowned.
Thomas continued.
"Richard knew Vale would eventually turn against his family. Project Harbor was designed to sever every criminal connection to Cavanaugh businesses and leave the legitimate companies clean enough for you to inherit."
"Why didn't he complete it?"
"He tried."
"The ledger?"
"Part of it."
"Mrs. Chen?"
Thomas nodded.
"She wasn't originally an agency recruiter. She worked for one of Richard's private compliance teams."
Evelyn stared.
"He told her to send me here?"
"Possibly."
"Why?"
Thomas looked at his daughter.
"Because he trusted you."
She almost laughed.
"A man I never met trusted me?"
"He knew what Anna taught you."
"And?"
"He believed that if Vale ever moved against Damien's children, someone from outside the Cavanaugh family needed to be close enough to notice."
Damien became still.
"My father arranged Evelyn's placement from the grave?"
"Not exactly. He left contingency instructions."
"That's insane."
Thomas nodded.
"Richard was not a simple man."
Evelyn paced.
"So Mrs. Chen received some trigger eleven months ago."
"Probably when Vale accessed an old account or entity."
"She found me."
"Yes."
"Assigned me to Damien."
"Yes."
"And didn't tell me any of this."
"She couldn't."
Evelyn stared at her father.
"Everyone in my life seems incredibly committed to making decisions on my behalf."
Thomas winced.
She had earned that.
Damien examined the note.
"If Richard wanted Evelyn here to protect my family, why warn me about women with secrets?"
Thomas looked confused.
"Who warned you?"
"Vincent."
Their eyes met.
Vincent had known.
Perhaps not everything.
But enough.
Before they could explore further, Theo appeared in the doorway clutching his elephant.
"Miss Evelyn?"
She immediately softened.
"Hey."
"I heard talking."
"Sorry."
"Are bad people coming?"
"No."
He looked unconvinced.
Damien crouched.
"We're safe."
Theo looked between him and Evelyn.
"Both of you?"
"Both."
Theo nodded solemnly.
"Okay."
Then he climbed onto Evelyn's lap.
Damien watched her wrap the boy in the coat he'd given her.
A strange realization settled over him.
His father had manipulated events from beyond the grave.
Vale had manipulated fear.
Vincent had manipulated trust.
Mrs. Chen had manipulated Evelyn's employment.
For months, powerful adults had arranged chess pieces.
Yet none of them had anticipated the simplest force in the story.
Evelyn loved Lucas and Theo.
Not because of Richard.
Not because of Thomas.
Not because of a ledger.
Because they were children who needed her.
That was the one thing nobody had engineered.
And it was about to matter.
At 1:03 the next morning, Mrs. Chen called Damien's private number.
He answered instantly.
She whispered before he could speak.
"Don't trace this."
"Where are you?"
"There's no time."
"What did my father tell you?"
A shaky breath.
"Protect the Mercer girl until she protects your sons."
Damien looked toward Evelyn sleeping in the chair beside Theo.
"What does that mean?"
"It means Richard knew Vale's last target wouldn't be the ledger."
"What would it be?"
Mrs. Chen began crying.
"The bloodline."
Damien's body went cold.
"What?"
"Vale doesn't want your company anymore."
"Then what does he want?"
"He wants the Cavanaugh name to end."
A sound came through the phone.
Mrs. Chen gasped.
The call disconnected.
Damien immediately alerted Adrian.
But the warning remained.
The bloodline.
Lucas.
Theo.
For the first time, Damien understood that securing his empire might not save his family.
May you like
He might have to destroy the empire instead.
