Chapter 8 - The Threat Beneath the Cradle

Amelia read Gabriel’s note three times.

Daniel took it from her.

“We’re leaving.”

“I’m tired of leaving.”

“This isn’t about pride.”

“I know.”

“Then pack.”

Amelia looked at the silver baby rattle.

Something inside her shifted.

Fear remained.

But beneath it grew anger.

For weeks, everyone had been moving Amelia around a chessboard.

Roman.

Gabriel.

Daniel.

Security teams.

Even people who loved her treated her like the piece most necessary to protect.

Amelia was done being a piece.

“No.”

Daniel stared.

“No?”

“I’m not spending the rest of my pregnancy running.”

“What do you propose?”

“We end it.”

Daniel almost laughed.

“You’re an architect, Amelia.”

“Restoration specialist.”

“That distinction is not helping.”

“I also spent ten years married to Roman.”

Daniel stopped.

Amelia met his eyes.

“I listened.”

“To what?”

“Everything he thought I wasn’t hearing.”

Names.

Properties.

Patterns.

How men like Gabriel moved money.

How Roman anticipated threats.

How power hid behind legal companies.

Amelia had never participated in Roman’s empire.

But she had lived beside it long enough to recognize its architecture.

And architecture was something she understood.

“Call Claire,” she said.

Daniel exhaled.

“You are becoming alarmingly comfortable giving orders.”

“Pregnancy.”

“That is not medically recognized as a management style.”

Amelia almost smiled.

Claire agreed to meet.

When she saw the note, her face hardened.

“Gabriel is losing control.”

“Why?”

“Because Roman is dismantling the financial network Gabriel wanted.”

Amelia looked up.

“Gabriel wanted Roman’s empire?”

“Parts of it.”

“He said this was revenge.”

“It was. Revenge and greed rarely stay separate.”

Claire sat.

“Gabriel believed Matteo could replace Roman. Matteo would control Baltimore, Gabriel would control Matteo.”

“And now?”

“Roman is destroying the thing they planned to inherit.”

Amelia felt unexpected pride.

She immediately resented the feeling.

“What does Gabriel have left?”

“Matteo.”

“Money?”

“Some.”

“People?”

“Fewer every day.”

“That makes him more dangerous.”

“Yes.”

Amelia looked at the note.

“We need him desperate enough to expose himself.”

Claire stared.

“What are you thinking?”

Amelia described it.

By the end, Daniel looked horrified.

Claire looked impressed.

Roman, when told, looked furious.

Amelia called him from Claire’s secured phone.

“I need something.”

Roman stood beside his office window.

“Anything.”

“Don’t say anything. Listen.”

He went quiet.

“I want you to announce that I contacted you.”

Roman frowned.

“I’m listening.”

“Say I agreed to come home.”

“No.”

She blinked.

“You said you’d listen.”

“I did. No.”

“Roman.”

“You want Gabriel to think you’re returning to the house.”

“Yes.”

“He’ll attack.”

“That’s the idea.”

“You’ll be bait.”

“No. He’ll think I am.”

Roman paced.

“Where will you actually be?”

“Safe.”

“That word has become meaningless.”

Amelia almost smiled.

“I learned that from you.”

He rubbed his forehead.

“Daniel agrees?”

“No.”

“Good. Daniel and I finally have something in common.”

“Roman.”

Silence.

“Please.”

The word changed him.

Not because it gave him authority.

Because he knew how hard it was for her to say.

“What do you need me to do?”

The plan took three days.

Roman publicly moved household security.

A florist truck delivered nursery furniture.

A doctor known to treat Amelia entered the residence.

A woman with Amelia’s hair and approximate height was photographed briefly near an upstairs window.

Rumor moved through Baltimore.

Amelia Duca had returned.

Gabriel noticed.

So did Matteo.

Encrypted communications activated.

Claire monitored what channels remained accessible.

“They’re moving,” she told Amelia.

Roman’s home became a controlled trap.

Federal agents observed from nearby properties.

Stefano coordinated private security.

Roman stood inside the nursery.

The room was almost finished.

Cream walls.

White crib.

A wooden rocking chair Amelia had chosen online months earlier.

He had assembled it after she disappeared.

Not because he expected her home.

Because he didn’t know what else to do with his hands.

Stefano entered.

“Movement near the east wall.”

Roman’s face hardened.

“How many?”

“Unknown.”

“Federal team ready?”

“Yes.”

“What about Matteo?”

“No visual.”

Roman looked at the crib.

“This ends tonight.”

At the remote monitoring site, Amelia watched cameras.

Daniel stood behind her.

“I hate this.”

“You’ve mentioned that.”

“If Roman gets killed because of your plan—”

“He won’t.”

“You sound confident.”

“I’m trying.”

Claire watched another screen.

“There.”

A vehicle entered the neighborhood.

Then another.

No plates.

Roman’s old organization would once have solved this through violence.

Tonight, he had chosen evidence.

Capture.

Prosecution.

A life that could someday be explained to a child without lying.

The first intruders crossed the property line at 1:13 a.m.

Federal teams waited.

Roman’s security allowed them deeper.

One entered through the service corridor.

Another cut power to the rear wing.

A third appeared near the nursery.

Roman watched through night vision.

“Where is Gabriel?”

Stefano whispered, “Not seeing him.”

Roman’s stomach tightened.

Wrong.

Gabriel would not send men to watch someone else win.

He liked control too much.

“Abort,” Roman said.

Stefano frowned.

“What?”

“This isn’t the real attack.”

At the monitoring site, Claire suddenly stood.

“Oh God.”

Amelia turned.

“What?”

Claire pointed at a map.

The communications they had been following were not originating near Roman’s house.

They were bouncing through repeaters.

The true source was closer.

Much closer.

Daniel’s face changed.

“This location.”

Claire nodded.

Gabriel had never believed Amelia went home.

He had used Roman’s trap to locate the people monitoring him.

Headlights swept across the windows.

Amelia froze.

Outside, vehicles surrounded the building.

Daniel drew his weapon.

Claire whispered, “He played us.”

The lights went out.

Amelia’s heart slammed.

A voice came through the building’s emergency speaker.

Gabriel.

“Amelia.”

Daniel moved toward the door.

Gabriel continued.

“You and Roman really are suited for each other.”

Glass shattered downstairs.

Claire pulled Amelia toward a rear corridor.

“We have an exit.”

They ran.

Another door opened ahead.

A man stepped through.

Matteo.

He smiled.

“Hello, cousin’s wife.”

Daniel raised his weapon.

Matteo already had his pointed at Amelia.

“Lower it.”

Daniel obeyed.

Matteo stepped closer.

His eyes moved to Amelia’s belly.

“Roman is tearing down everything our family built because of you.”

Amelia’s fear turned cold.

“No.”

Matteo frowned.

“He’s tearing it down because men like you proved what it was built on.”

His jaw tightened.

“You always thought you were better than us.”

“I thought I could live beside it without becoming part of it.”

“And?”

“I was wrong.”

Matteo motioned with the weapon.

“Move.”

They were forced outside.

Gabriel waited near a black SUV.

He looked pleased.

Then Claire stepped into view.

Gabriel’s expression changed.

“Claire.”

“Hello, Gabriel.”

“You betrayed me.”

She laughed softly.

“You abandoned me years ago. Betrayal requires something left to betray.”

Gabriel looked at Amelia.

“Roman ruined you too.”

Amelia shook her head.

“No. He hurt me.”

“Same thing.”

“No.”

She met Gabriel’s eyes.

“That’s the difference between you and him.”

Gabriel’s smile faded.

“Roman learned the difference.”

Sirens sounded far away.

Gabriel turned.

Matteo swore.

Claire smiled.

“I activated the emergency beacon twenty minutes ago.”

Gabriel’s face hardened.

He grabbed Amelia.

Daniel lunged.

Matteo struck him.

Amelia screamed.

Gabriel pulled her toward the SUV.

Then engines roared down the road.

Black vehicles.

Roman arrived first.

He stepped out before the car fully stopped.

His face became lethal when he saw Gabriel holding Amelia.

“Let her go.”

Gabriel pressed a weapon against her side.

“Again with that phrase.”

Roman froze.

Gabriel smiled.

“Give me your phone.”

Roman obeyed.

“Weapon.”

Roman placed it on the ground.

“Now kneel.”

Stefano shouted, “Roman—”

Roman lowered himself without hesitation.

Amelia stared.

Gabriel looked almost disappointed by how quickly he complied.

“You built an empire men feared.”

Roman looked only at Amelia.

“Not worth her.”

Gabriel’s eyes narrowed.

“You really have changed.”

“Yes.”

“That makes this less satisfying.”

He raised the weapon.

Amelia saw Matteo move behind Roman.

Saw the gun.

Roman didn’t.

“Roman!”

Matteo fired.

The shot exploded through the night.

May you like

And Roman fell.
