Chapter 3 - The Man Elena Wanted Her to Meet

Adrian did not ask Leah why she kept looking toward the edge of the ballroom.
That was the first thing she liked about him.
He seemed comfortable with silence.
The second was that he didn't treat every conversation like something to win.
"You don't dance often," he said.
"How can you tell?"
"You're concentrating."
"Maybe I'm concentrating on not stepping on you."
"Then I'm honored by the effort."
She laughed.
Across the room, Dante disappeared.
Leah told herself she didn't care.
Ten minutes later, she was still wondering where he'd gone.
"He's important to you," Adrian said.
Leah stiffened.
"Who?"
"The man you've checked for six times."
Heat rose into her face.
"I haven't."
"Seven."
She sighed.
"Is it that obvious?"
"Only if someone is paying attention."
Adrian released her hand when the music ended.
"I don't know your situation, Leah, and I don't need to. But I'm not interested in competing with a ghost."
"He's not a ghost."
"That's probably worse."
She looked at him.
Adrian smiled gently.
"I'm still happy I met you."
Before Leah could answer, Elena appeared.
Her expression was wrong.
"Leah. I need you upstairs."
"What happened?"
"Nothing bad."
Elena glanced around.
"At least I don't think so."
They entered the temporary legal office.
An envelope lay on the desk.
Leah recognized the handwriting immediately.
Her knees almost weakened.
"Where did you get that?"
"One of the foundation's archive boxes was delivered here by mistake. Bianca served on the board years ago. This was inside a sealed legal folder."
Leah touched the envelope.
Bianca had been dead for three years.
Seeing her handwriting was like hearing a voice from another room.
"For Leah, when she finally leaves."
Leah looked at Elena.
"What does that mean?"
"I haven't opened it."
"Why would she leave this with the foundation?"
"I don't know."
Leah broke the seal.
Inside was a letter.
And a key.
She read the first line.
My darling Leah, if you are reading this, then I hope you have finally learned that gratitude is not a life sentence.
Leah stopped breathing.
Elena sat beside her.
The letter continued.
Bianca wrote that bringing Leah into the estate had never created a debt.
She had watched Leah grow into someone who repaid every kindness ten times over, as though love had to be earned daily.
She feared Leah would one day mistake being needed for belonging.
Then came the sentence that made Leah's hands tremble.
Dante will try to protect you from everything except himself.
Leah closed her eyes.
"What?"
Elena whispered.
Leah kept reading.
Bianca described the key.
It belonged to a small townhouse in the city.
Bianca had purchased it years earlier and placed it in trust for Leah.
Not as payment.
Not as inheritance for service.
As freedom.
A home whose door belongs only to you.
Leah covered her mouth.
All these years.
She had had somewhere else to go.
Bianca had known.
Known exactly what Leah might become inside that estate.
Indispensable.
Loved.
And trapped by her own loyalty.
There was one final paragraph.
And if the day comes when Dante tells you that you are only family, ask yourself why a man who has faced enemies without blinking becomes frightened whenever another man makes you smile.
Leah stared at the sentence.
Elena whispered, "Bianca knew."
"Apparently everybody knew."
"Except Dante."
"No."
Leah folded the letter carefully.
"Especially Dante."
Downstairs, Dante stood near the entrance with Raphael.
"Where's Leah?"
Raphael looked amused.
"Thought you didn't care."
Dante said nothing.
Raphael's expression became serious.
"You want advice?"
"No."
"Good, because you're getting it."
Dante stared at him.
"You've spent years telling that woman where she stands. Eventually she's going to believe you."
"I never promised her anything."
"Exactly."
Dante looked toward the staircase.
Something about that sentence landed harder than expected.
Eventually she's going to believe you.
When Leah returned, she looked different.
Not visibly.
Not enough for anyone else to notice.
Dante did.
Something had settled inside her.
A decision.
Adrian approached.
"Everything okay?"
Leah nodded.
"Yes."
Then she surprised herself.
"Actually, I think it will be."
The gala ended after midnight.
Outside, rain had recently passed, leaving the marble steps shining beneath golden light.
Adrian offered his arm.
Leah took it.
They descended together.
Dante emerged behind them.
He saw Leah's hand resting on Adrian's arm.
Stopped.
Adrian said something that made her smile.
Then, beside the waiting car, he offered his hand.
Leah hesitated.
And took it.
Dante felt something inside him go cold.
"Leah."
She turned.
Their eyes met across the steps.
For a moment, nobody else existed.
Then Adrian opened the car door.
Leah looked away.
And left.
Dante stood beneath the lights long after the car disappeared.
Raphael came beside him.
"You look surprised."
Dante's voice was low.
"By what?"
"That she listened."
Dante turned.
Raphael continued.
"You told her there could never be more."
"I never said those exact words."
"You didn't need to."
That night, Leah returned to the Raviieri estate at 1:17 a.m.
She didn't go to bed.
Instead, she pulled two suitcases from her closet.
May you like
And began packing.
