Chapter 7 - The Life He Stayed For

Noah had not been kidnapped.

Not yet.

They found him sixty yards from the house.

He was standing in the snow without a coat.

A man was beside him.

Adrian reached them first.

Daniel came seconds later with a weapon drawn.

“Step away from the boy!”

The stranger raised both hands.

Noah looked confused.

“Adrian?”

Adrian pulled him behind his body.

“Are you hurt?”

“No.”

The stranger spoke.

“I wasn’t taking him.”

Daniel shoved him against a tree.

“Name.”

“Lucas Bell.”

Adrian froze.

Elena arrived breathless.

“Who?”

Lucas looked at her.

“I knew your brother.”

Everything stopped.

Elena stared.

“Evan?”

Lucas nodded.

“I worked with him.”

“Why were you outside?”

“I’ve been trying to reach Adrian for three days.”

Adrian’s voice was ice.

“So you approach my four-year-old son through the woods?”

“I saw him climb out the window.”

Noah immediately said, “I was exploring.”

Elena grabbed him.

“You never do that again.”

“I’m sorry.”

She wrapped him in her coat.

Adrian looked at Lucas.

“Start talking.”

---

Lucas Bell had been a junior auditor at Moretti Capital.

Evan trusted him.

Four years earlier they discovered Victor’s scheme.

Not just stolen money.

Bribes.

Construction kickbacks.

Political payments.

Victor had siphoned millions from Moretti projects while building a network powerful enough to protect him.

Evan copied the records.

Then he died.

Lucas panicked.

He disappeared.

“Victor thought Evan gave the files to Elena,” Lucas said.

Elena stared.

“He didn’t.”

“I know. He gave them to me.”

“Where are they?”

Lucas reached into his coat slowly.

Daniel stopped him.

“Easy.”

Lucas pulled out a flash drive.

“I’ve had them four years.”

Adrian looked furious.

“You let a man die and sat on evidence?”

Lucas flinched.

“I was twenty-five. Victor sent photographs of my parents’ house.”

“And now?”

“Both my parents died last year.”

That silenced everyone.

“I have nobody left for him to threaten.”

Elena looked at the drive.

“What’s on it?”

“Enough to destroy Victor.”

Adrian’s jaw tightened.

“Then why hasn’t he killed you?”

“He doesn’t know I still have it.”

“Why come now?”

Lucas looked at Noah.

“Because I saw the photographs online. I realized Victor found a new pressure point.”

Noah sat at the table coloring while the adults spoke quietly.

Elena kept one hand on his shoulder.

Adrian inserted the drive into Daniel’s secured laptop.

Files opened.

Transfers.

Emails.

Recorded calls.

Contracts.

Names.

Victor Salazar had not simply stolen from Moretti.

He had built a criminal ecosystem inside it.

Adrian read silently.

His face drained.

“What?” Elena asked.

He turned the screen.

One document carried Adrian’s electronic signature.

“Did you sign that?”

“No.”

Daniel leaned closer.

“It looks authentic.”

“It isn’t.”

Lucas nodded.

“Victor prepared several.”

Adrian understood immediately.

“If we release this evidence, people will think I approved the transactions.”

“Yes.”

“How bad?”

Daniel scrolled.

“Potential federal charges.”

Elena stared.

“You could go to prison.”

“If prosecutors believe the signatures are real.”

Lucas said, “Evan documented the forgery process. But proving it could take years.”

Adrian stood.

“Send everything.”

Daniel looked at him.

“To whom?”

“Federal prosecutors. The SEC. The board. Every major lender.”

Elena stared.

“Adrian.”

He looked at her.

“That could destroy your company.”

“Yes.”

“Your hotels.”

“Maybe.”

“Your reputation.”

“Yes.”

“Your entire life.”

“No.”

He looked at Noah.

“My entire life is sitting at that table drawing a purple horse.”

Noah looked up.

“It’s a dinosaur.”

Adrian blinked.

“Of course it is.”

Noah returned to coloring.

Elena’s throat tightened.

Adrian looked at Daniel.

“Send it.”

Daniel hesitated.

“Once it goes, there’s no controlling what happens.”

“That’s the point.”

The sentence hit Elena.

No controlling what happens.

Adrian had spent his life preventing exactly that.

Now he pressed send.

---

The consequences arrived within hours.

Moretti Group shares plunged.

News vans appeared outside corporate headquarters.

The board demanded Adrian resign temporarily.

Three partners froze projects.

Federal agents raided Victor Salazar’s Manhattan office.

Victor disappeared.

By midnight his face was everywhere.

Adrian sat beside the farmhouse fireplace watching his life collapse on television.

Elena approached.

“You okay?”

“No.”

She sat beside him.

“I expected you to lie.”

“About being okay?”

“Yes.”

“I’m trying something new.”

She smiled faintly.

The news anchor reported that Adrian Moretti could face scrutiny over fraudulent documents bearing his signature.

“Elena.”

“Yes?”

“If this ends badly for me—”

“Don’t.”

“Listen.”

She did.

“My attorney has documents establishing Noah’s trust independently from the company.”

“I don’t care about money.”

“I know. But someday Noah might.”

“He likes cereal from a plastic cup.”

“Today.”

She looked at him.

“What are you saying?”

“If I’m charged, I don’t want you waiting for me.”

Her chest tightened.

“I wasn’t planning our wedding.”

A sad smile.

“I know.”

“If you go to prison for something you didn’t do, I’ll testify.”

“You don’t owe me that.”

“I’m not doing it for you.”

“For Evan.”

“Yes.”

That night, Noah refused to sleep.

Adrian sat beside him.

“Bad dream?”

Noah nodded.

“Were you there?”

Adrian’s chest tightened.

“In the dream?”

“Yes.”

“What was I doing?”

“You left.”

The words hurt more than any headline.

Adrian looked at him.

“I’m here.”

“But Mommy says people leave.”

Adrian glanced toward Elena standing outside the doorway.

“What else does Mommy say?”

“She says people can come back.”

Adrian swallowed.

“That sounds like her.”

Noah touched his hand.

“Are you leaving?”

Adrian chose the truth.

“I might have to go away for work.”

“To a hotel?”

“Maybe somewhere less nice.”

Noah frowned.

“Why?”

“Because some people think I did bad things.”

“Did you?”

“Some. Not those things.”

Noah considered this with the moral seriousness only children possess.

“Did you say sorry?”

“For the bad things I did?”

“Yes.”

“I’m trying.”

“Then maybe they forgive you.”

Adrian looked down.

“If only adults were that simple.”

Noah yawned.

“Can you do dragon voice?”

Adrian groaned.

“Again?”

“Yes.”

He read.

Halfway through, Noah fell asleep holding Adrian’s sleeve.

Elena watched from the doorway.

Her eyes burned.

---

Victor was arrested the next morning.

Not because of Adrian.

Because of Elena.

While reviewing Evan’s old files, she noticed a recurring storage company in invoices from Burlington.

She remembered Evan mentioning rented archives years earlier.

Police traced the unit.

Victor was hiding there.

Inside were passports, cash, weapons, and documents linking him directly to the threats against Noah.

It ended without gunfire.

No dramatic chase.

No impossible rescue.

Just a tired man sitting among boxes of stolen evidence while federal agents placed him in handcuffs.

Three weeks later, forensic analysts confirmed Adrian’s signatures had been forged.

Charges against him evaporated.

The board begged him to return.

He refused the CEO position.

That shocked everyone.

He remained chairman only long enough to restructure the company, install independent oversight, and create an internal fund for employees harmed by Victor’s schemes.

Then he walked away from daily control.

Elena found him outside Lantern & Pine on the first warm afternoon of March.

He had come back to Vermont.

No security convoy.

No assistants.

Just Adrian.

“What now?” she asked.

He looked at the bookstore.

“I bought a house.”

Her eyes widened.

“You what?”

“Not here.”

“Good.”

“Two miles outside town.”

“Adrian.”

“I’m not asking to move in.”

“You bought a house?”

“I wanted to be near Noah.”

She crossed her arms.

“You could rent.”

“I dislike landlords.”

She laughed despite herself.

He smiled.

Then his expression became serious.

“I’m not asking you for anything.”

“That sounds suspicious.”

“I want scheduled time with Noah. Whatever you think is appropriate.”

“You’re staying?”

“Yes.”

“For how long?”

Adrian looked toward the bookstore windows.

Inside, Noah was showing Maggie a drawing.

“As long as he wants me.”

Elena’s heart moved dangerously.

“Adrian...”

“I know.”

“What?”

“You’re not ready.”

She stared.

He gave her a small smile.

“For once, I can wait.”

Then Noah spotted him through the glass.

His entire face lit up.

He ran toward the door.

“Adrian!”

Adrian crouched as Noah crashed into his arms.

Elena stood beneath melting snow dripping from the roof.

She watched Adrian hold their son.

And realized the most frightening thing was no longer that Adrian might disappear.

May you like

It was that she was beginning to believe he wouldn’t.
