Chapter 17 - The Truth About Why Grant Chose Me

I wanted to run straight into Valente Transportation.

Mateo physically stood in the doorway.

“No.”

“My sister is inside.”

“I know.”

“Move.”

“No.”

I shoved him.

He didn’t move.

“I swear to God, Mateo—”

“Harper.”

His voice cracked.

That stopped me.

“If you run inside and I lose you both, I will not survive it.”

The words destroyed my anger.

For one second.

Then:

“So we make a plan.”

He nodded.

Good.

Progress.

Dominic knew the underground service routes.

Isabella knew Vincent’s habits.

Rosa knew what terrified him.

Everyone who had lied finally had to work together.

That seemed appropriate.

Vincent called.

“Harper.”

“Let Emily go.”

“Come inside.”

“No.”

He laughed.

“You’re learning.”

“What do you want?”

“The ledger.”

“You already know federal investigators have copies.”

“I want the original.”

“Why?”

“Because Anthony wrote something in it nobody else noticed.”

Mateo retrieved the ledger.

We searched.

Inside the rear cover was a hidden page.

Names.

Accounts.

And one confession.

Written by Anthony Caruso:

If anything happens to me, Samuel Novak and Vincent Reese know the location of all reserve accounts.

Vincent Reese.

Not Caruso.

Rosa’s son.

His true name.

Rosa began crying.

“He knew.”

Vincent had always known who his mother was.

He hadn’t been searching for his identity.

He had been exploiting everyone’s guilt.

Then another note.

R. Jenkins copied the account keys. Daughter H. may have final sequence without knowing it.

I stared.

“Me?”

That explained everything.

Grant hadn’t selected me only because of my father.

Anthony believed my father had hidden a financial key with me.

“What sequence?”

I thought back.

Childhood.

Dad.

Numbers.

Then remembered.

Every year on my birthday, Dad gave me a ridiculous scavenger hunt.

The same four numbers always ended the final clue.

0716.

My blood went cold.

Room 716.

Mateo stared.

“The hotel room.”

“No.”

I suddenly understood.

“Grant changed the plaque to 714 so I would enter 716.”

“Yes.”

“But why that exact room?”

Luca said, “Vincent may have selected the hotel because 716 meant something.”

The room number wasn’t random.

It was bait specifically designed for me.

0716.

July 16.

My birthday.

The number my father used.

I whispered:

“The rest of the code is probably my birthday plus Emily’s.”

We combined dates.

The ledger opened through a concealed digital chip.

Thousands of account numbers appeared.

Enough money to explain decades of crime.

Enough evidence to destroy Vincent.

We sent copies to federal investigators.

Then Mateo looked at me.

“Now we get Emily.”

We entered through the underground dock.

Dominic went first.

Vincent’s men recognized him.

That distraction gave Luca’s team access.

I found Emily in my father’s old office.

Alive.

Tied to a chair.

She saw me.

“Harper!”

I ran toward her.

Vincent stepped from behind the door.

Gun in hand.

Of course.

Every nightmare in my life apparently required Vincent standing in a doorway.

“You should have stayed invisible,” he said.

I looked at Emily.

Then at him.

“You should have picked a less stubborn family.”

He smiled.

“I didn’t choose you because you were stubborn.”

“No?”

“I chose you because Robert loved you.”

My anger surged.

“You hated him.”

“He took my mother from me.”

“No.”

Rosa entered behind him.

Vincent froze.

She was crying.

“Anthony took you from me.”

Vincent’s face changed.

“Don’t.”

“I looked for you every day.”

“Stop.”

“I never abandoned you.”

“STOP!”

His weapon shook.

For the first time, Vincent didn’t look powerful.

He looked fourteen.

Rosa stepped closer.

“You were my baby.”

Vincent’s eyes filled.

Then Mateo entered.

Vincent swung the gun.

I screamed.

A shot fired.

But nobody fell.

Luca had struck Vincent’s arm.

The bullet hit the ceiling.

Seconds later, security overwhelmed him.

Mateo reached me.

“You okay?”

I nodded.

Emily shouted from the chair:

“I AM NOT.”

I laughed and cried at the same time.

We freed her.

Police arrived.

Real police.

Federal agents.

Vincent was arrested.

Dominic surrendered voluntarily.

Rosa sat on the floor, watching her son being led away.

There was no victory in her face.

Only grief.

Outside, reporters gathered.

Mateo looked at me.

“It’s over.”

I wanted to believe him.

Then a federal agent approached.

“Ms. Jenkins?”

“Yes?”

“We recovered Robert Jenkins’s missing box.”

My heart stopped.

“Where?”

“Vincent had it.”

He handed me one sealed envelope.

My father’s handwriting.

FOR HARPER—WHEN SHE FINALLY KNOWS EVERYTHING.

And suddenly, there was one final truth waiting for me.
