Chapter 8 - The Courtroom Trap

Daniel saved the timeline for last.
He placed a large board before the judge.
Date by date.
Claim by claim.
Brooke said I followed her to Melissa's birthday.
Evidence showed I arrived first.
Brooke said I followed her to the concert.
Evidence showed I purchased my ticket seven weeks before Caleb.
Brooke said I appeared deliberately at an engagement party.
Evidence showed the bride invited me independently.
Brooke said she photographed me because she feared I was following her.
Security footage showed Brooke following me.
Brooke said the anonymous messages proved escalating obsession.
There was no evidence connecting them to me.
Meanwhile, Eric had photographed me at Brooke's request.
Brooke had possessed photographs of me from before the breakup.
And Lauren testified that Brooke feared losing Caleb long before I issued the ultimatum.
Then Daniel opened the binder.
“Your Honor, this case began with a claim that Hannah Pierce could not accept the end of her relationship.”
He turned a page.
“But the evidence shows Ms. Pierce moved away, changed routines, blocked communications, and repeatedly attempted to avoid the petitioner.”
Another page.
“The petitioner, meanwhile, documented Ms. Pierce's movements, recruited another person to photograph her, and interpreted shared social spaces as intentional pursuit even when records demonstrate Ms. Pierce was there first.”
Brooke's attorney fought back hard.
He argued that imperfect recollection did not equal fabrication.
That Brooke genuinely felt threatened.
That relationships created complicated emotions.
All true.
But the question wasn't whether Brooke had emotions.
The question was whether those emotions proved I was stalking her.
Then Brooke testified again.
Daniel approached slowly.
“Ms. Ellis, why did you photograph Hannah before her relationship with Caleb ended?”
“I was concerned.”
“About?”
“Her behavior.”
“What behavior?”
“She was controlling.”
“Did Hannah threaten you?”
“No.”
“Threaten Caleb?”
“No.”
“Follow you?”
“I believed she did.”
“Before the breakup?”
Brooke hesitated.
“No.”
“So why were you photographing her?”
Silence.
Daniel waited.
Brooke finally said, “I knew what she was capable of.”
Daniel looked toward the judge.
“Before she had done it?”
May you like
Brooke realized the trap.
Too late.
