Chapter 9 - A Traitor in Black

Daniel Rourke had attended every Calder funeral.
Every birthday.
Every graduation.
He had sat beside June at her first college recital.
He had stood behind Rafe when Thomas Calder’s coffin was lowered into the ground.
And for the last seven years, he had served as chairman of Calder Maritime.
“He knew everything,” June whispered.
Rafe didn’t answer.
Claire stared at the recovered video.
“Elias told me Rourke saved him.”
“That’s what Rourke wanted him to believe,” Malcolm said.
“How do you know?”
“Because Thomas’s files show Rourke receiving payments from Armitage.”
He enlarged a transfer record.
Millions.
Claire looked sick.
“No.”
Rafe’s voice was quiet.
“He used your brother.”
“For what?”
“To locate the evidence.”
Claire understood.
“That’s why Elias took Adrian.”
I looked at her.
“What?”
“My brother contacted me six months ago.”
“Six months?”
“I thought it was a scam at first. Then he told me things only Elias could know.”
She sat down.
“He said he’d been living under another name. He said Thomas Calder betrayed him and Voss helped.”
“But Voss saved him.”
“I know that now.”
Rafe asked, “Who told Elias otherwise?”
Claire looked at him.
“Rourke.”
Everything aligned.
Rourke had found Elias.
Fed him lies.
Turned him against Voss.
Turned Claire against the Calders.
Then arranged the hotel attack.
But why shoot Rafe?
Malcolm answered.
“Control.”
Rafe looked at him.
“If I died, who takes Calder Maritime?”
June’s face went pale.
“The board.”
“Who chairs the board?”
Daniel Rourke.
The shooting wasn’t revenge.
It was acquisition.
Rourke wanted the empire, the evidence, and anyone capable of exposing him removed.
My phone buzzed.
A message from an unknown number.
A photograph.
Voss.
Still tied to the chair.
But alive.
Behind him stood Elias Mercer.
Older.
Thinner.
His expression hard.
The accompanying message:
MIDNIGHT. OLD SHIPYARD. BRING THE DRIVE.
Rafe looked at the time.
10:18 p.m.
“No.”
Claire stood.
“My brother will kill Voss.”
“You don’t know that.”
“I know Elias.”
“You haven’t seen him in seven years.”
The truth hit her.
Rafe turned to Grant.
“Call federal authorities.”
She nodded.
“I already did.”
He looked surprised.
“You thought I was waiting for permission?”
For the first time, Rafe smiled at a police detective.
“I’m beginning to like you.”
“Don’t.”
The FBI arrived forty minutes later.
What followed was the strangest strategy meeting I had ever attended.
Federal agents.
Boston detectives.
A mafia boss.
His security chief.
His sister.
A suspected accomplice.
And me.
A nurse who should have been home sleeping.
Special Agent Rebecca Cole took control.
“No independent moves.”
Rafe said nothing.
Cole looked at him.
“That especially means you.”
“I didn’t say anything.”
“You didn’t need to.”
The plan was simple in theory.
The flash drive would be copied.
A decoy would go to the shipyard.
Claire would make contact.
Federal teams would surround the area.
Nobody would improvise.
Rafe raised an eyebrow.
Cole pointed at him.
“Nobody.”
At 11:32 p.m., we arrived near the abandoned Charlestown shipyard.
I was supposed to remain in the command vehicle.
I hated it.
June remained at a secure location.
Claire wore a concealed microphone.
Rafe sat beside me, despite repeated instructions that he was also supposed to remain behind.
“You should be resting.”
“You should be home.”
“We’ve established neither of us makes ideal choices.”
His mouth moved faintly.
Outside, Claire entered the warehouse.
Her voice came through the receiver.
“Elias?”
Silence.
Then a man emerged.
I recognized him from the video.
Elias Mercer.
“Claire.”
Her breath broke.
“Elias.”
For one heartbreaking moment, nothing else existed.
A brother and sister separated by seven years of lies stood ten feet apart.
Claire moved forward.
Elias raised a hand.
“Drive first.”
She stopped.
“They lied to you.”
“Everyone lied.”
“Thomas saved you.”
“No.”
“I saw the files.”
Elias’s expression changed.
“Rourke said—”
“Rourke is Armitage.”
Silence.
Elias took a step back.
“No.”
“Look at me.”
“Claire—”
“Look at me!”
Her voice cracked.
“Rourke used you.”
Elias stared at his sister.
Then a second voice echoed from inside the warehouse.
“Unfortunately, she’s right.”
Daniel Rourke walked into view.
Silver hair.
Dark overcoat.
Calm smile.
Rafe went completely still beside me.
The godfather.
The trusted adviser.
The man who had helped raise him.
Rourke held a gun.
Not aimed at Claire.
At Elias.
“Move away from her.”
Federal agents immediately prepared to enter.
Cole whispered, “Hold.”
Rourke continued.
“Elias, you were useful because grief makes people predictable.”
Elias looked devastated.
“You found me.”
“Yes.”
“You said Thomas sold me out.”
“I needed you angry.”
“Why?”
“Because angry men don’t investigate carefully.”
Claire whispered, “Where’s Voss?”
Rourke smiled.
“Safe enough.”
Elias’s hands curled.
“You used my sister.”
“Yes.”
Rafe suddenly opened the vehicle door.
Cole grabbed his arm.
“No.”
“That man killed my father.”
“We don’t know that.”
Rafe looked at her.
“We both know.”
I placed a hand on his shoulder.
“Stay.”
He looked at me.
The same moment as outside the hotel.
Only now I understood what it cost him to obey.
Rourke had betrayed his father.
Targeted June.
Shot him.
Manipulated Elias.
Possibly murdered Thomas.
Every instinct in Rafe wanted to confront him.
But he stayed.
Because walking in could get Claire killed.
Rourke held out his hand.
“The drive.”
Claire gave him the decoy.
He inserted it into a small laptop.
Agent Cole whispered, “Wait.”
Seconds.
Then Rourke’s smile disappeared.
“Fake.”
Everything erupted.
Rourke grabbed Claire.
Elias lunged.
Federal agents moved.
A gunshot cracked through the warehouse.
I stopped breathing.
The command channel filled with voices.
“Shots fired!”
“Move!”
“Suspect down!”
“Medic!”
I was out of the vehicle before anyone could stop me.
Rafe followed.
Inside, Claire was kneeling beside Elias.
Blood spread across his shoulder.
Not fatal-looking.
Voss was found alive in a back office.
Rourke had been disarmed and pinned to the floor by federal agents.
I dropped beside Elias.
“Pressure here.”
Claire obeyed.
Elias looked at me.
“Elena Ward.”
“Yes.”
A weak smile.
“You always walk toward the bleeding person.”
My eyes burned.
“So I’ve been told.”
Across the warehouse, Rafe stood over Daniel Rourke.
The older man looked up.
“You became exactly what your father feared.”
Rafe said nothing.
Rourke smiled.
“A criminal pretending he protects people.”
Rafe’s fists tightened.
I watched him.
Everyone did.
He could have attacked.
He could have become exactly the man Rourke expected.
Instead Rafe stepped back.
“Take him.”
Federal agents lifted Rourke to his feet.
As they walked him past, Rourke leaned toward Rafe.
“You think this ends with me?”
Rafe looked at him.
“It ends with the truth.”
Rourke’s smile returned.
“No.”
He glanced toward June’s absent place.
“It ends when you learn who gave me her schedule.”
Rafe’s face changed.
Because only a handful of people knew June’s movements.
And one of them was standing inside the warehouse.
Wearing a black suit.
May you like
Someone Rafe had trusted for years.
