Chapter 9 - The Altered Report

The signature belonged to Marcus Hale.

I confronted him in Washington.

He didn't deny it.

“I changed the report.”

“Why?”

“To protect the intelligence operation.”

“You erased Daniel’s final minutes.”

“I classified them.”

“You falsified them.”

Marcus looked exhausted.

“Vivian, we believed Voss still had access to government systems. If he knew Mercer survived long enough to pass information—”

“You decided truth was expendable.”

“I decided lives weren't.”

That stopped me.

There were names attached to the operation.

Sources.

Families.

People who might have died.

I understood his decision.

I didn't like it.

Those were different things.

“Why not correct it later?”

Marcus looked down.

“Because later became twenty years.”

That sentence sounded painfully familiar.

Cowardice isn't always dramatic.

Sometimes it's simply postponing the right thing until silence becomes easier.

Marcus signed a corrected statement.

Daniel’s record was restored.

So was Samuel’s testimony.

The official review moved forward.

Meanwhile, Lillian’s pregnancy advanced.

Nathan called me every time she experienced anything remotely unusual.

“Vivian, she wants pickles.”

“She’s pregnant.”

“At two in the morning.”

“Still pregnant.”

“She says the baby kicked.”

“Nathan.”

“What?”

“You have commanded SEAL teams.”

“Yes.”

“Act like it.”

“This is different.”

I laughed.

Family life terrified him more than combat.

Good.

It meant he understood what mattered.

At seven months, Lillian asked me to help choose a name.

“If it's a boy,” she said, “Daniel.”

I stared at her.

“You don't have to.”

“I want to.”

Nathan nodded.

“So do I.”

I cried in the middle of a baby store.

Lillian took a picture.

She threatened to send it to everyone who believed Rear Admiral Morgan had no feelings.

“Delete that.”

“Never.”

Life was becoming ordinary.

Beautifully ordinary.

Then Thomas called.

“I found something in Grandma’s storage unit.”

“What?”

“A box from my dad.”

Inside was a videotape.

Daniel had recorded it days before Basra.

And unlike the letters, this message wasn't intended for Robert.

May you like

It was addressed to me.
