Chapter 9 - The Woman at the Restaurant

Her name was Camille.

And no, she wasn't Rodrigo's mistress.

That would almost have been simpler.

She was an investor.

At least, that was what Rodrigo had told her.

Camille owned several vacation properties along the Gulf Coast.

Rodrigo had approached her about investing in the charter company.

He claimed he and George already owned two boats.

They didn't.

He claimed they had significant capital.

They didn't.

He claimed his wife—me—was the company's financial director.

I wasn't.

He had used my professional reputation to make the business appear legitimate.

That revelation angered me more than the possibility of an affair.

My name mattered.

I had spent twelve years building it.

Rodrigo had treated it like collateral.

Camille agreed to speak with investigators.

She had emails.

Presentations.

Financial projections.

My name appeared everywhere.

Daniela Morales — Financial Strategy

I had never seen a single document.

The scheme was no longer merely marital betrayal.

It was identity misuse.

The legal consequences grew.

So did Rodrigo's desperation.

He began sending apologies.

Long ones.

I was under pressure.

George convinced me.

I wanted to give us a better life.

I never stopped loving you.

That last sentence almost made me angry.

Then I realized it didn't matter.

Love without respect is merely possession wearing perfume.

I didn't answer.

Then he sent:

Can we meet once without lawyers?

No.

The divorce negotiations proceeded.

My position was straightforward.

Restore the marital assets.

Protect my interest in the home.

Account for hidden funds.

Separate debts created without my authorization.

Rodrigo resisted.

Until Monica introduced George's recordings.

Then his attorney requested a break.

When they returned, Rodrigo looked directly at me.

“You really want to destroy me.”

I met his eyes.

“I want an accurate accounting.”

“You always reduce everything to numbers.”

“No.”

I leaned forward.

“Numbers are simply the part you can't manipulate.”

He looked away.

The settlement talks lasted six hours.

We made progress.

Not enough.

Then Monica received an email.

She read it.

Her expression changed.

“What?”

She turned her laptop.

The private account containing $38,400 had been emptied.

That morning.

Despite pending proceedings.

Destination unknown.

Rodrigo looked confused.

For once, I believed him.

His attorney whispered urgently.

Then Rodrigo said:

“I didn't move it.”

Monica asked, “Who else had access?”

His face went pale.

Nobody spoke.

Then I understood.

Teresa.

His mother.

But when investigators traced the transfer, it hadn't gone to Teresa.

It had gone somewhere nobody expected.

Lauren.

My sister-in-law.

The woman who had once handed me a chore schedule now held nearly forty thousand dollars from my husband's hidden account.

May you like

And nobody knew why.
