Chapter 4 - The Mistress Changes Sides

My father wanted armed security outside every room. For once, I did not argue.
The recording was horrifying, but Evelyn warned that its context and authenticity would be challenged. Vanessa agreed to meet investigators at a law office, provided she received her own counsel and protection.
She arrived without makeup, wearing inexpensive jeans and a borrowed coat. Without my silk robe and grandmother’s pearls, she looked younger than thirty-one.
I expected satisfaction. I felt only exhaustion.
“Why did you wear them?” I asked.
“Grant said they were Whitmore property.”
“You knew they came from my grandmother. I told you at a charity dinner last year.”
Her eyes fell. “Yes.”
It was the first useful truth she gave me.
Vanessa admitted that Grant had hired her as a communications consultant eighteen months earlier. Their affair began six months later. He told her I was unstable, that we lived separately, and that divorce papers were imminent. She wanted to believe him, but she had seen us attend events together and ignored the contradiction.
He later asked her to photograph documents, deliver encrypted drives, and register consulting companies. Grant said the arrangements minimized taxes. Vanessa suspected fraud only after finding the wall of Vance records.
“Why record him?” Evelyn asked.
“Because he grabbed my throat when I asked what Mercer meant by handling Claire.”
Violence had not transformed Vanessa into an innocent person. It had finally made Grant’s nature impossible for her to ignore.
She surrendered her phone and passwords. Forensic analysts verified the recording’s metadata. Messages showed Grant ordering her to provoke me with the earrings. They also revealed that Vanessa warned him I might be pregnant after seeing prenatal vitamins in my bathroom. Grant replied: Then tonight has to work.
The plan was to make me appear violent. Vanessa would wear the pearls, I would confront her, and hidden cameras would capture a carefully edited version. Grant intended to seek an emergency declaration that I was mentally incompetent, activating the forged proxy.
Instead, his rage destroyed his own script.
“What happened to the missing microfilm?” I asked.
Vanessa looked at Grant’s old phone on the evidence table. “He burned it in the fireplace. But first he photographed it.”
She knew where the photographs were stored: a private server managed by Lionel Mercer, Grant’s chief financial officer.
Federal investigators were now involved because the diverted shipments crossed state lines. Mercer was stopped at Dallas Love Field carrying two phones and a passport under another name. Within hours, he requested a lawyer and began negotiating.
Grant responded by going public.
His statement described me as “a troubled heiress experiencing a private mental-health crisis.” He claimed my injuries resulted from a fall after I attacked Vanessa. Anonymous accounts circulated an edited clip showing me pointing at Vanessa and shouting, but omitted the blows and my expulsion into the storm.
The old Claire would have hidden until my father’s lawyers solved everything. That instinct rose again, familiar as nausea.
Then I watched Grant’s interview. He wore our wedding ring and said, with practiced sorrow, “I only want my wife and unborn child to receive help.”
He had announced my pregnancy to the world before I had told my closest friends.
I closed the laptop.
“Schedule a press conference,” I told Evelyn.
Dad looked concerned. “You don’t owe the public your pain.”
“No. But I owe myself my own voice.”
The next morning, I stood before a plain blue backdrop with no father beside me and no family logo behind me. The bruises were visible. I described neither the active financial investigation nor sealed evidence. I simply stated the documented facts of the assault and asked the public not to confuse wealth with immunity or privacy with silence.
Then I played twelve seconds of unedited security audio.
Six impacts.
Grant’s voice: You should have learned your place.
By evening, the district attorney confirmed that Grant had been arrested on charges related to domestic assault, evidence tampering, and witness intimidation.

But as officers processed him, a Whitmore attorney filed the forged proxy in civil court and demanded immediate control of my trust vote.
Grant was attempting to steal my future from inside a jail cell.
