Chapter 17 - I Bought Back More Than a Condo

A year after Dubai, I refinanced.
Not because I needed to.
Because I wanted the paperwork clean.
New loan.
New title review.
New records.
My name.
Only my name.
When the final documents arrived, I framed one page.
Dad laughed.
"People usually frame diplomas."
"I have one."
"Photographs?"
"Have those too."
"You framed a deed."
"Yes."
"Engineer."
"Exactly."
I also renovated.
Nothing dramatic.
New paint.
Shelving.
Lighting.
The crooked grout behind the stove stayed.
I'd installed it myself at twenty-five.
Imperfection had earned historical protection.
The dining table remained by the window.
And for the first time, I hosted dinner.
Dad came.
Mom came.
Eric came.
No attorneys.
No folders.
No financial documents.
Eric brought bread.
Store-bought.
We applauded.
"Very funny."
Dinner wasn't magically comfortable.
There were pauses.
Old wounds.
Mom occasionally overexplained.
Dad sometimes withdrew.
Eric made jokes when nervous.
I became controlling when uncomfortable.
Families don't transform into different people.
They learn different responses.
At dessert, Eric stood.
"I have something."
I immediately became suspicious.
"Relax."
He handed me a small box.
Inside was a miniature brass bridge.
"What is this?"
"Found it at an antique shop."
I turned it over.
"Why?"
"Because you build bridges."
"That's painfully obvious."
"Just open the note."
I did.
You spent your whole life building bridges for everyone else.
Thanks for not burning this one completely.
I looked at him.
"That's incredibly cheesy."
"I know."
I hugged him anyway.
Briefly.
He whispered:
"I'm still sorry."
"I know."
This time, the words didn't feel useless.
May you like
Because now they had a year of behavior behind them.
