Chapter 11 - My Son Finally Told the Truth

Dominic's most important apology happened almost a year after the SOLD sign.

Not in court.

Not in front of Margaret.

Not while crying.

It happened at Sunset Manor.

Harold's Chair was hosting a family workshop.

Dominic stood before thirty people.

He told them:

“I used to say my wife manipulated me.”

Then he paused.

“She did manipulate me.”

Another pause.

“But I used that fact to avoid saying something harder.”

The room was silent.

“I betrayed my mother because I wanted the money too.”

I felt my throat tighten.

Dominic continued.

“I knew she hadn't agreed to sell her house. I convinced myself she'd eventually understand because admitting the truth would mean admitting I was stealing her choice.”

Nobody moved.

“That is what financial abuse can look like. Sometimes the person doing it tells himself he's helping.”

Afterward, he found me in the hallway.

“You okay?”

“Yes.”

“Was that too much?”

“No.”

I hugged him.

The first real hug since everything happened.

He held on.

And for the first time, neither of us needed to pretend the past hadn't happened.
