Chapter 14 - When Elias Finally Opened His Heart

Elias rebuilt Samuel’s porch.

Aayoka helped.

When they finished, Elias carved two small letters into the underside of one board.

S.W.

Samuel Ward.

Aayoka saw.

“He would like this.”

“You never knew him.”

“No.”

She smiled.

“But I know you.”

Elias sat on the new porch.

For years, grief had been a locked room inside him.

Aayoka had never forced the door.

She had simply waited outside until he opened it himself.

“I want to show you something.”

He took her to a hill overlooking the ranch.

Two graves stood beneath an oak.

His parents.

Beside them, a stone for Samuel.

Aayoka knelt.

Elias spoke aloud.

“This is Aayoka.”

She looked at him.

He continued.

“She walked onto the ranch and ruined my peace.”

Aayoka laughed through tears.

“She talks too much.”

“Elias.”

“She argues constantly.”

“Keep going and you walk home.”

He smiled.

Then his expression softened.

“And she taught me that being alive and living aren’t the same thing.”

Aayoka’s smile disappeared.

Elias looked at Samuel’s stone.

“I’m living again.”

Wind moved through the grass.

For once, saying goodbye did not feel like betrayal.

May you like

It felt like permission.
