Chapter 13 - Mia Remembered What Her Father Told Her

Erik Voss looked nothing like the man Elena had imagined.
He was fifty-eight.
Thin.
Gray.
Hands shaking.
Not a professional assassin.
A frightened man who had spent four years expecting his past to knock on the door.
Dante brought him to a secure federal location.
Nathan Cole conducted the interview.
Elena insisted on being present.
Voss saw her and immediately looked down.
“I’m sorry.”
Elena sat opposite him.
“I don’t want your apology.”
“I know.”
“Tell me what happened.”
Voss took a long breath.
“Gabriel hired me to frighten your husband.”
“By running him off the road?”
“He said Marco had documents.”
“So you chased him.”
“Yes.”
“Did you hit his car?”
“No.”
“Then why did he crash?”
“He looked down at something. Phone maybe. The road was wet. He swerved.”
Elena remembered Marco’s voicemail.
He had been calling her.
Her stomach twisted.
“What happened next?”
“I stopped.”
“Why?”
“I wasn’t supposed to kill him.”
“Did you help?”
“I ran to the car.”
Voss’s voice shook.
“He was bleeding. Conscious.”
Elena looked away.
Dante’s fists tightened.
“What did Marco say?”
Voss stared at Elena.
“He said your name.”
She closed her eyes.
“He kept saying Elena and Mia.”
Tears came.
She ignored them.
“Then?”
“I called emergency services anonymously.”
“And left?”
“No.”
Voss swallowed.
“A second car arrived.”
“Who?”
“I couldn’t see the driver at first.”
“Then?”
“A man walked to Marco’s car.”
“Did you know him?”
“Yes.”
Elena leaned forward.
“Who?”
Voss looked toward Dante.
“Gabriel.”
Dante did not move.
“What did he do?”
Voss shook his head.
“I left.”
“You left?”
“I knew what he intended.”
Elena’s voice became sharp.
“What did he intend?”
Voss could not meet her eyes.
“To make sure Marco never talked.”
Nathan Cole asked, “Did you see Gabriel kill him?”
“No.”
“Then your testimony establishes presence, not murder.”
Voss nodded miserably.
Elena stood.
She wanted to hate him.
Maybe she did.
But the person who mattered was Gabriel.
Voss reached into his coat.
Security moved instantly.
He froze.
“I have something.”
Dante’s men searched him.
A folded piece of paper.
Voss handed it to Elena.
“Marco gave me this.”
Her hands shook.
“He was conscious enough to give you something?”
“Yes.”
“Why didn’t you deliver it?”
“I was scared.”
“For four years?”
“Yes.”
She unfolded the page.
Marco’s handwriting.
One sentence.
Tell Mia the moon comes back.
Elena started crying.
Not because it revealed anything.
Because even half-conscious, trapped in a ruined car, Marco had thought of their daughter.
She pressed the note to her lips.
When she returned to the estate that evening, Mia was coloring at the kitchen table.
A moon.
Yellow.
Surrounded by blue stars.
Elena sat beside her.
“Why do you like moons so much?”
Mia shrugged.
“Daddy.”
“What did Daddy say about the moon?”
“That it goes away but it comes back.”
“Anything else?”
Mia colored.
“Elena.”
Dante stood in the doorway.
She looked up.
He held Voss’s testimony documents.
Mia suddenly said, “Daddy said if he didn’t come back, I should remember the song.”
Elena froze.
“What song?”
Mia hummed.
Not Clair de Lune.
A children’s tune.
Simple.
Elena recognized it.
Marco used to sing it while washing dishes.
“Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star.”
Dante sat.
“What about the song?”
Mia frowned.
“He changed words.”
“What words?”
“I don’t remember.”
Elena began humming.
Slowly.
Mia joined.
Then stopped.
“No. Daddy said…”
She thought.
“First star, second moon, third one hides the truth.”
Dante’s eyes sharpened.
“Again.”
Mia repeated it.
“First star, second moon, third one hides the truth.”
Elena whispered, “There were three keys.”
Brass star from Bunny.
Moon wall in Sicily.
Third one.
Where?
Mia kept coloring.
“Third one was Mama.”
Elena looked at her.
“What?”
“Daddy said Mama has the last one.”
“I don’t.”
Mia pointed at Elena’s neck.
She wore no necklace.
Then Mia pointed at her hand.
No ring.
Elena suddenly remembered.
Wedding ring.
The one she sold.
Her pulse exploded.
“Marco changed my ring.”
Dante frowned.
“What?”
“After Mia was born, he had the wedding ring resized.”
“Why?”
“I lost weight.”
“Who did it?”
“A jeweler in Queens.”
“Name?”
“Armand Jewelers.”
Dante’s team located the shop records.
The jeweler remembered Marco.
Very well.
He had asked for a secret compartment built beneath the setting.
Elena covered her mouth.
“The ring.”
She had sold the ring eighteen months after Marco died.
To a pawn shop.
They traced it.
Sold.
Auctioned.
Purchased by a private buyer.
Dante stared at the buyer’s name.
Richard Hale.
The missing judge.
Elena whispered, “He knew.”
Someone had tracked the ring long before Elena understood its importance.
Hale had possessed it for two years.
Now missing.
Dante’s security traced financial activity.
A hotel room booked that morning under an alias linked to Hale.
Twenty minutes away.
Federal agents surrounded the building.
Judge Hale surrendered without resistance.
Terrified.
The ring was in his pocket.
So was the original Black Ledger.
Nathan Cole stared at both.
“Why keep them?”
Hale looked exhausted.
“Insurance.”
“Against Sarto?”
“Against everyone.”
Elena took the wedding ring inside an evidence room while Cole watched.
A technician opened the hidden compartment.
Inside was another micro-storage chip.
Marco’s third key.
Star.
Moon.
Ring.
The final file was audio.
Recorded inside a car.
Gabriel’s voice.
Clear.
“Bellandi cannot reach Cole tomorrow.”
Another man asked, “You want him scared?”
Gabriel answered.
“No. I want him gone.”
Elena stopped breathing.
There it was.
The order.
Direct.
Unambiguous.
Marco had recorded the conversation before his death.
Nathan Cole closed his eyes briefly.
“We have him.”
But then another voice appeared on the recording.
Victor Sarto.
“What about the wife and kid?”
Gabriel responded.
“Leave them. Unless they find the keys.”
Dante looked toward Elena.
Sarto said, “And if they do?”
Gabriel answered without hesitation.
“Then finish the family.”
Mia’s innocent humming echoed in Elena’s memory.
For four years, Gabriel had not ignored them.
He had waited.
Watching.
Keeping Elena poor enough to control.
Close enough to find.
And now that all three keys had resurfaced, his old order had become active again.
Nathan Cole reached for his phone.
“We arrest Gabriel tonight.”
Dante’s expression hardened.
“Where is he?”
Cole’s agents tracked him.
No result.
Then Dante’s estate called.
Teresa.
Her voice was panicked.
“Elena?”
Elena grabbed the phone.
“What happened?”
“Mia is safe. But someone left something at the gate.”
“What?”
“A package.”
Inside was a photograph of Elena entering the federal building.
And a note.
You found all three keys. Now come hear the truth Marco never had time to tell you. Alone.
A location followed.
The abandoned St. Catherine’s maternity wing.
The place where Mia’s story had begun.
Gabriel wanted Elena.
May you like
And for the first time, she wanted to go to him too.
