Chapter 5 - The Trap Inside the Trap

Tessa had known she was being followed.
That was why she left.
Not because she wanted to play hero.
Because whoever was watching the mansion had begun watching her.
She had noticed the gray sedan twice.
Then three times.
The driver changed.
The vehicle didn’t.
Tessa deliberately led them away from the estate.
Her mistake was underestimating how many people Vale had.
Now she sat inside an abandoned industrial building with plastic restraints around her wrists.
Vale stood ten feet away.
He was older than the photographs.
Thinner.
A scar ran from his left temple toward his jaw.
But his eyes were alert.
Patient.
Dangerously calm.
“You’re impressive,” Vale said.
“I get that a lot.”
“You joke when you’re frightened.”
“I joke when men give speeches.”
Vale smiled.
Beside him stood Eric Nolan.
One of Marco’s security officers.
Tessa had interviewed him.
He had been calm.
Helpful.
Forgettable.
That was the point.
“How long?” Tessa asked.
Nolan said nothing.
Vale answered.
“Long enough.”
“You cloned Cal’s credentials.”
Vale smiled.
“Very good.”
“The flower delivery?”
“Nolan.”
“The microphone?”
“Nolan.”
“The photograph of Marco sleeping?”
Vale stepped closer.
“That was me.”
Tessa’s expression remained controlled.
Inside, fear moved like electricity.
Vale had stood inside Marco’s bedroom.
Three nights ago.
Close enough to kill him.
Yet he hadn’t.
“You need the ledger,” she said.
“Yes.”
“If Marco gives it to you?”
“I disappear.”
“You expect me to believe that?”
“No.”
At least he was honest.
Tessa looked around.
Old warehouse.
Multiple exits.
Four men visible.
Possibly more.
She had left Marco enough information to understand the situation.
The problem was Marco himself.
He would come.
Of course he would.
Vale knew that too.
At 11:58 p.m., headlights appeared outside.
Vale smiled.
“Right on time.”
Marco entered alone.
Black coat.
Empty hands.
Vale frowned.
“Where is it?”
“Safe.”
“You misunderstand your position.”
Marco looked at Tessa.
Their eyes met.
She gave the smallest shake of her head.
Marco understood.
More men than expected.
“Let her go,” he said.
Vale laughed.
“You sound like your father.”
“My father is dead.”
“Because he understood when to make a deal.”
“My father spent his life making deals with men like you.”
Vale’s smile disappeared.
“And became powerful.”
“And died afraid of everything he built.”
Silence.
Marco reached inside his coat.
Several men moved.
He slowly removed the black ledger.
Vale’s eyes locked onto it.
“Put it down.”
Marco did.
Vale signaled Nolan.
Nolan approached.
Tessa watched carefully.
Marco looked at her.
Once.
Then at the overhead lights.
Tessa understood.
Nolan bent for the ledger.
The lights died.
Darkness.
Someone shouted.
Tessa dropped sideways.
A second later, emergency lights flashed red.
Marco moved toward her.
Outside, vehicles surrounded the building.
Vale cursed.
“You brought them!”
Marco reached Tessa and cut the restraints.
“I brought accountability.”
Federal agents entered from multiple sides.
Vale ran.
Nolan tried another exit and found Cal waiting.
Cal smiled without humor.
“Bad evening?”
Nolan froze.
Within minutes, the warehouse was secured.
But Vale was gone.
A tunnel beneath the building led to an adjacent property.
Marco stood beside Tessa outside.
“You disobeyed me.”
She stared at him.
“You’re beginning with that?”
“You went alone.”
“I had a plan.”
“You were tied to a chair.”
“A temporary complication.”
Marco stepped closer.
“You could have been killed.”
“So could you.”
“That’s different.”
“Why?”
He opened his mouth.
Nothing came out.
Tessa waited.
Marco looked away.
Because he knew the answer.
It wasn’t different.
Not anymore.
Cal approached.
“Sorry to interrupt your argument.”
“We’re not arguing,” Marco said.
Tessa spoke simultaneously.
“We’re absolutely arguing.”
Cal nodded.
“Good. Vale escaped.”
Marco’s expression hardened.
“But Nolan is talking.”
The interrogation changed everything.
Vale had spent years rebuilding quietly.
He believed V-17 could restore his influence.
But Nolan revealed something more disturbing.
Vale had never intended merely to steal the ledger.
He planned to frame Marco.
Copies of selected documents had already been altered.
Transactions changed.
Dates modified.
Marco’s name inserted.
If released publicly, they would make it appear that Marco had continued his father’s criminal network.
“He wants to destroy you whether he gets the original or not,” Tessa said.
Marco nodded.
“Then we move first.”
The real V-17 was delivered to federal authorities.
Forensic experts began authenticating it.
Marco voluntarily provided records from his legitimate companies.
Tessa documented the security breaches.
Nolan provided testimony.
For the first time, Vale was losing control of the narrative.
But he still had one weapon.
Public perception.
Two days later, the story exploded online.
DUCA EMPIRE LINKED TO SECRET CRIMINAL LEDGER.
Photographs appeared.
Documents.
Anonymous accusations.
Marco’s business partners called.
Board members panicked.
Reporters gathered outside the estate.
Tessa found Marco alone in the kitchen.
He stood at the same island where they had first met.
A bowl of pears had returned.
She picked one up.
“You look terrible.”
“Thank you.”
“Have you slept?”
“Yes.”
“When?”
He didn’t answer.
Tessa sat beside him.
“Vale wants you angry.”
“I am angry.”
“He wants you impulsive.”
Marco looked at her.
“That’s more difficult.”
“Good.”
He smiled faintly.
She handed him the pear.
He stared.
“That’s mine.”
“Not yet.”
“You’ve stolen enough fruit.”
“Consider it consulting expenses.”
Marco laughed.
A real laugh.
Then his phone buzzed.
He read the message.
His expression changed.
“What?”
He handed it to her.
Vale had sent an address.
And a photograph.
Marco’s younger sister Elena leaving her apartment.
Tessa went cold.
Beneath it:
THE LEDGER FOR YOUR SISTER. NO POLICE.
Marco stood.
Tessa grabbed his wrist.
“No.”
“He has Elena.”
“We don’t know that.”
“He’s watching her.”
“Exactly. The photograph doesn’t prove he has her.”
Marco froze.
Tessa enlarged the image.
Something was wrong.
The shadows.
The storefront.
A poster in the background.
She searched quickly.
Then looked at Marco.
“This picture wasn’t taken today.”
“How do you know?”
“The store behind her closed three months ago.”
Vale was bluffing.
Marco called Elena.
She answered immediately.
Safe.
Surrounded by security.
Marco exhaled.
Tessa watched him.
“That was the point,” she said. “He wanted you to stop thinking.”
Marco sat again.
For the first time, he seemed tired.
“I almost did.”
“But you didn’t.”
“Because of you.”
Their eyes met.
The kitchen became quiet.
Again.
That strange silence that always appeared between them.
Marco reached toward her face and gently moved a loose strand of hair away from her glasses.
Tessa didn’t move.
Neither did he.
Then Cal rushed into the room.
He stopped.
“Oh.”
Marco lowered his hand.
Tessa looked away.
Cal cleared his throat.
“I can come back.”
“What is it?” Marco asked.
Cal’s expression became serious.
“We found Vale.”
Marco stood.
“Where?”
Cal turned the tablet.
A live camera feed showed a man entering a private airfield.
Vale.
A jet waited nearby.
“He’s running,” Cal said.
Tessa studied the screen.
“No.”
Marco looked at her.
“What?”
“If he were running, he wouldn’t use an airfield you could find.”
She zoomed in.
Vale looked directly toward the security camera.
Then smiled.
Tessa felt her stomach drop.
“He wants us to see him.”
Marco understood.
The airfield wasn’t an escape route.
It was another distraction.
Then the mansion alarms activated.
May you like
For the first time since Tessa Morgan entered Marco Duca’s life, every alarm screamed at once.
