Chapter 1 - The Lie Beneath the Chandeliers

Celeste Parrish had spent most of her adult life believing that good decisions were built slowly.

You gathered facts. You weighed consequences. You asked the right questions before committing yourself to anything that could alter the direction of your life.

Then, in less than three seconds, she broke every rule she had ever made.

The ballroom glittered behind her like nothing important had happened.

Crystal chandeliers threw warm light over marble floors. A string quartet played somewhere beyond the double doors. Wealthy donors laughed over champagne and auction paddles while Celeste stood in the coat-check alcove with a stranger she had just publicly introduced as her fiancé.

Her hands were still shaking.

The man in the charcoal suit was not.

He watched her with the same unsettling calm he had worn in the corridor.

“The shorter man had something hidden inside his jacket,” Celeste said. “He kept reaching toward it.”

The stranger tilted his head slightly.

“You noticed that from twenty feet away?”

“My brother taught me to read rooms. I worked a crisis line. And you looked like you were being cornered.”

For the first time, genuine surprise entered his expression.

“Cornered?”

Celeste frowned.

“Yes.”

A quiet breath left him. It might have been amusement.

“You thought I needed rescuing.”

“You’re welcome.”

That almost-smile returned.

It made him more dangerous-looking, not less.

Celeste crossed her arms.

“Look, whoever those men are, you should tell event security. I can get the manager.”

“No.”

The answer came gently.

Too gently.

Celeste stared at him.

“No?”

“It would create complications.”

“That is a very strange reaction for someone who was just threatened.”

His eyes rested on her face for a long moment.

“What is your name?”

She hesitated. “Celeste.”

“Celeste what?”

“Why?”

“Because five minutes ago you announced to a ballroom full of people that you were going to marry me.”

Her face heated.

“That was obviously not real.”

“Was it?”

She blinked.

He glanced toward the ballroom doors.

A photographer had captured them walking in together. Several guests had seen her holding his arm. The men from the corridor had heard every word.

Her stomach tightened.

“You’re joking.”

“I rarely do.”

“Great. Fantastic. Then consider the engagement officially canceled.”

He looked almost entertained.

“You end engagements quickly.”

“I start fake ones quickly too.”

Before he could answer, a woman in a black event-management suit appeared at the entrance.

“Celeste?”

Her supervisor, Marianne, looked pale.

Not angry.

Pale.

That was worse.

“Could I speak with you?”

Celeste stepped away from the stranger.

Marianne lowered her voice.

“Do you know who that is?”

“No.”

Marianne glanced at him, then back at Celeste.

“Adrian Vale.”

The name meant nothing.

Celeste’s expression must have shown it.

Marianne swallowed.

“Vale Holdings.”

That meant something.

Everyone in Toronto had heard of Vale Holdings, though most people could not explain exactly what it owned. Hotels. Real estate. Private logistics. Construction. Restaurants. Warehouses along the waterfront. A dozen companies that seemed to overlap like shadows.

Celeste had seen the name on hospital donation plaques.

“He’s rich,” she whispered.

Marianne looked at her as though she had announced that Lake Ontario was slightly damp.

“He is not just rich.”

The pause changed the air.

Celeste looked back at Adrian.

He had not moved.

Two men in dark suits now stood near the alcove entrance. They had not been there before.

Marianne whispered, “People say he runs half the city nobody talks about.”

Celeste felt something cold move through her chest.

“People say lots of things.”

“Yes.”

Marianne’s eyes were fixed on Adrian.

“But nobody says those things where he can hear them.”

Celeste slowly turned.

Adrian met her gaze.

There was no triumph in his face. No threat.

Only patience.

That frightened her more.

She walked toward him.

“Adrian Vale?”

“Yes.”

“You could have mentioned that.”

“You never asked.”

“I thought I was preventing you from being robbed.”

“So I gathered.”

“You let me walk through a room calling you my fiancé.”

“You were very convincing.”

“This is not funny.”

“No.”

His expression softened by a fraction.

“It is unusual.”

Celeste lowered her voice.

“What were those men doing?”

“Trying to persuade me to accept a business arrangement I had already refused.”

“With whatever was inside that jacket?”

Adrian’s gaze sharpened.

“I did not say that.”

“You didn’t have to.”

“Celeste.”

The way he said her name made her stop.

“You did something reckless tonight,” he said. “Kind. But reckless.”

“I’m aware.”

“No. I don’t think you are.”

The ballroom doors opened again.

This time the photographer from earlier approached with obvious excitement.

“Mr. Vale, Ms. Parrish—one quick photo for the charity page? The engagement moment was incredible.”

Celeste froze.

“The what?”

The photographer smiled.

“Someone already posted the candid. People are asking if the rumors are true.”

Celeste took out her phone.

Three messages.

Then eleven.

Then twenty-seven.

Her best friend, Priya, had sent only one sentence.

CELESTE, WHY ARE YOU TRENDING WITH ADRIAN VALE?

Celeste opened social media.

There she was.

Blue dress. Hand on Adrian’s arm. His face turned toward her. Her expression determined.

A caption beneath the image read:

TORONTO’S MOST PRIVATE BILLIONAIRE JUST GOT ENGAGED?

Her stomach dropped.

“That is not good,” she whispered.

Adrian looked at the screen.

“No.”

Then his own phone vibrated.

He read one message.

The calmness in his face disappeared.

It was subtle, but Celeste saw it.

“What?”

Adrian locked the screen.

“Those men from the corridor have left.”

“Good.”

“No.”

He looked toward the ballroom.

“They believed your claim.”

Celeste did not understand.

“Why does that matter?”

His eyes returned to hers.

“Because they will now believe you matter to me.”

The music from the ballroom continued.

Glasses clinked.

Someone applauded the auctioneer.

Yet the world around Celeste seemed to narrow to Adrian’s voice.

“I can make a statement tonight,” she said. “I’ll tell everyone it was a misunderstanding.”

“That would make you look vulnerable and me look dishonest.”

“I don’t care what I look like.”

“I do.”

“Why?”

“Because until I understand who was behind that conversation, I need them uncertain about you.”

Celeste stared at him.

“You want the fake engagement to continue.”

“For a few days.”

“No.”

“A week.”

“Absolutely not.”

“I will compensate you.”

Her eyes flashed.

“You think you can buy me?”

“No. I think you have tuition, debt, and three jobs.”

The blood drained from her face.

“How do you know that?”

Adrian looked toward one of his men.

The man held a tablet.

Celeste’s anger rose so fast it burned away her fear.

“You investigated me?”

“After you touched my arm and claimed you intended to marry me in front of two hostile men? Yes.”

“That is insane.”

“That is survival.”

She stepped closer.

“I am not part of your world.”

“I know.”

“Then keep me out of it.”

For the first time, Adrian looked almost regretful.

“I would like to.”

His phone vibrated again.

He read the message, then handed the screen to her.

A photograph had been taken less than ten minutes earlier.

It showed Celeste leaving the staff entrance of the hotel on a previous shift.

The image had been sent anonymously.

Below it were six words.

WE KNOW WHERE YOUR FIANCÉE WORKS.

Celeste’s breath caught.

Adrian took the phone back.

His voice became very quiet.

“Now do you understand why ending the engagement publicly may not be enough?”

For the first time that night, Celeste wished she had kept walking past the corridor.

But deep down she already knew she would have made the same choice again.

And that frightened her most of all.

Because Adrian Vale was no longer a stranger she had saved by accident.

May you like

Someone had decided she belonged to him.

And before the night was over, Celeste would learn that Adrian intended to make certain no one else could use that lie against her.
