Chapter 3 - The Photograph in Dante’s Safe

Elena left the terrace with one question burning through her mind.

Photographs.

Of her.

Before tonight.

Dante was no longer beside Richard Aldridge.

She found him near the ballroom entrance.

“We're leaving.”

Dante looked at her face.

“What happened?”

“You tell me.”

His expression became guarded.

“Not here.”

That was answer enough.

Twenty minutes later they were inside Dante’s penthouse.

The moment the door closed, Elena removed the diamond ring.

She placed it on the table.

“Explain.”

Dante removed his jacket.

“Marcus spoke to you.”

“He said you had photographs of me.”

Silence.

“Is that true?”

“Yes.”

Elena stared.

“How long?”

“Several weeks.”

Her stomach turned.

“You've been following me?”

“Watching.”

“That's supposed to sound better?”

“No.”

“Why?”

Dante walked toward the windows.

Elena followed.

“No. You don't get to become mysterious now. You knew my name. My mother. My job. My bus route. You knew my ring size.”

Dante turned.

“Yes.”

“Why?”

He was silent for several seconds.

Then he crossed to a wall panel.

A fingerprint scanner appeared.

The panel opened.

Behind it was a safe.

Dante removed a folder.

He placed it on the table.

“Read it.”

Inside were financial documents.

Photographs.

Property records.

Elena recognized Richard Aldridge.

Then her father.

She froze.

The photograph had been taken more than fifteen years earlier.

Her father, Mateo Reyes, stood beside a younger Richard Aldridge.

“What is this?”

“Your father worked for Aldridge Development.”

“No. Dad was a mechanic.”

“Afterward.”

Elena looked up.

“After what?”

Dante pulled out another document.

“Before he became a mechanic, Mateo Reyes was an accountant.”

She stared.

“My father never told me that.”

“He had reasons.”

Dante explained.

Fifteen years earlier, Richard Aldridge’s company had been involved in an illegal financial scheme using shell corporations to acquire properties from families facing foreclosure.

Mateo discovered it.

He copied records.

Then he threatened to expose Richard.

“What happened?”

Dante's voice lowered.

“He disappeared from the company.”

“My father quit.”

“That’s what you were told.”

Elena felt dizzy.

“He died in a car accident.”

“I know.”

She stared at Dante.

“Are you saying Richard caused it?”

“No.”

The answer came firmly.

“I don't have evidence of that, and I won't lie to you.”

“Then what do you have?”

“Evidence that Richard threatened your father days before the accident.”

Elena sank into a chair.

The room seemed to tilt.

“Why do you care?”

Dante looked toward the city.

“Because Mateo wasn't the only person investigating Richard.”

“Who else?”

“My father.”

Elena looked up.

Dante's face had changed.

The coldness remained, but beneath it was something she had not seen before.

Pain.

“My father trusted Richard Aldridge,” Dante said. “It cost him everything.”

Dante’s father had invested millions with Richard.

When the scheme began collapsing, Richard shifted liability onto his partners.

Dante’s family nearly lost their legitimate businesses.

His father died several years later.

Dante had spent years rebuilding what remained.

“And now you want revenge.”

“I want proof.”

“Through me?”

“You were a connection.”

Elena stood.

“So that's why you approached me.”

“At first.”

The words hurt more than they should have.

“At first?”

Dante looked at her.

“When I saw you leave that ballroom, the plan changed.”

“How convenient.”

“Elena—”

“You used me.”

“Yes.”

The honesty stunned her.

No excuse.

No manipulation.

Just yes.

Dante continued.

“And you have every right to walk away.”

Elena grabbed her purse.

“That's exactly what I'm doing.”

He didn't stop her.

She reached the elevator.

“Elena.”

She turned.

Dante held the folder.

“There is something else.”

“I don't care.”

“You will.”

He removed an envelope.

The handwriting on the front made Elena’s heart stop.

Her name.

Written in her father's hand.

ELENA.

She crossed the room.

“Where did you get that?”

“A safe-deposit box connected to one of my father's companies.”

“Open it.”

“I haven't.”

“Why?”

“It belongs to you.”

Her fingers shook as she opened the envelope.

Inside was a letter.

My little Elena,

If you're reading this, then something happened before I could fix the mistake I made.

Your mother knows nothing.

Keep it that way unless you have no choice.

Richard Aldridge isn't the man he pretends to be.

But neither is the Salvatore family.

Trust evidence, not names.

And whatever happens, remember that you are not responsible for the choices your father made.

I love you more than anything.

Dad.

Elena read it twice.

Then a third time.

“What mistake?”

Dante shook his head.

“I don't know.”

She looked at him.

“You expect me to believe that?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because lying now would be stupid.”

Despite everything, she almost believed him.

Almost.

She returned the letter to the envelope.

“I’m going home.”

Dante nodded.

“I'll have someone drive you.”

“No.”

“Elena—”

“I took three buses here. I can take three buses home.”

“It’s after midnight.”

“I don't need your protection.”

Dante's jaw tightened.

But he didn't argue.

“I'll call you tomorrow.”

“Don't.”

She entered the elevator.

The doors began closing.

Dante stood motionless outside.

For some reason, Elena wanted him to stop her.

He didn't.

The doors closed.

By the time Elena reached her apartment, exhaustion had replaced anger.

She unlocked the door.

Something felt wrong.

Nothing obvious.

Just instinct.

She switched on the light.

Her tiny living room looked normal.

Then she saw the envelope beneath her door.

No stamp.

No name.

Inside was another photograph.

Her father.

Richard Aldridge.

And a third man.

Elena stared at him.

Younger.

No beard.

But unmistakable.

Dante’s father.

On the back someone had written:

ASK DANTE WHAT HIS FATHER AND YOURS WERE REALLY DOING TOGETHER.

Her phone rang.

Unknown number.

Elena answered.

“Hello?”

Silence.

Then a woman spoke.

“Elena Reyes?”

“Yes.”

“You don't know me.”

“Who is this?”

“My name is Sofia Romano.”

Elena remembered the name.

Romano.

Dante's attorney.

“I worked for Dante’s father,” Sofia continued.

“What do you want?”

“To warn you.”

Elena looked at the photograph.

“About Dante?”

“No.”

Sofia paused.

“About your father.”

Elena stopped breathing.

“What about him?”

“Mateo Reyes didn't discover Richard Aldridge’s operation.”

The woman’s next words shattered everything Elena thought she knew.

May you like

“He helped create it.”
