Chapter 16 - Ruth Callaway Opens Her Eyes

The letter was waiting when they returned.

Ruth sat beside the fireplace holding it.

“Someone came inside?” Ethan asked.

“No.”

“Then how—”

“Tommy found it beneath the front door.”

The envelope bore no name.

Inside was a copy of the final Callaway trust.

Samuel Boone had preserved it.

But the original remained missing.

A note accompanied the copy.

The original is in Samuel Boone’s chest.

Martha stared.

“My chest.”

The one in Hollister.

Her father had kept his promise until death.

Marshal Beckett sent two deputies immediately.

Three days later they returned with the wooden chest.

Martha recognized it.

Scratched cedar.

Iron lock.

Her father’s initials.

Ethan placed it on the dining table.

“Do you have the key?”

“No.”

Ruth smiled.

“Then my son finally gets to do something useful.”

Ethan broke the lock.

Inside were journals.

Letters.

Photographs.

And the original trust.

Signed.

Witnessed.

Legally valid.

It removed Elias as alternate executor.

Removed Voss entirely.

Placed temporary control, if Ruth and Ethan were incapacitated, with a neutral territorial trustee.

Blackridge’s plan had been built on a document that had no authority.

They had committed crimes for nothing.

Elias laughed when he saw it.

Then unexpectedly cried.

“My brother really did remove me.”

Ethan looked at him.

“Yes.”

“I deserved it.”

“Probably.”

Elias smiled sadly.

“Still charming.”

But Thomas had left another letter.

To Elias.

My brother,

I am angry with you, but anger is not the same as absence of love. If you ever become the man I know you can be, help Ethan rather than control him.

Elias could not finish reading aloud.

Ethan finished for him.

For twelve years both men had carried an incomplete version of Thomas Callaway.

One remembered betrayal.

The other remembered rejection.

The letter gave them something neither expected.

A chance.

The case against Silas Crowe strengthened quickly.

Blackridge’s records showed bribery.

Illegal land surveys.

Attempts to suppress medical reports.

Payments linked to Voss.

Silas was taken into territorial custody.

Voss agreed to testify fully.

His cooperation did not erase what he had done.

But it helped uncover it.

Edith Pierce received immunity in exchange for testimony.

Caleb faced lesser charges for accepting payments and providing information.

Ethan surprised him.

“I won’t ask them to excuse it.”

“I know.”

“But when this is done, there’s work here if you want it.”

Caleb stared.

“After everything?”

“You told the truth before you had to.”

“Late.”

“Still.”

Caleb’s eyes filled.

“Thank you.”

“Don’t make me regret it.”

“I won’t.”

Ruth recovered slowly.

One morning Martha entered her room and found the bed empty.

Panic hit.

Then she heard humming.

Ruth stood in the kitchen making coffee.

Martha nearly shouted.

“What are you doing?”

“Living.”

“You are impossible.”

“I learned from you.”

Martha laughed and cried at the same time.

Ethan entered.

Saw his mother standing.

Stopped.

Ruth looked at him.

“If you cry, I’ll deny seeing it.”

He crossed the room and hugged her.

Martha turned away to give them privacy.

Ruth reached out.

“You too.”

Martha joined them.

For several seconds the three stood in the center of the kitchen.

No medicine.

No threats.

No fear.

Just morning.

Later Ruth slept.

Martha packed.

Ethan found the bag.

His face changed.

“What is that?”

“Luggage.”

“I know what luggage is.”

“Congratulations.”

“You’re leaving?”

“My work here is finished.”

“No.”

Martha stared.

“No?”

“No.”

“You don’t decide that.”

“Then decide to stay.”

His directness disarmed her.

“Ethan…”

“You said ask you after Ma recovered.”

She remembered.

He had.

“What would I do here?”

“Whatever you want.”

“That isn’t an answer.”

“Run the kitchen.”

She raised an eyebrow.

“Bad answer.”

“Continue helping people.”

“Better.”

“Keep telling me when I’m an idiot.”

“Full-time position.”

He smiled.

Then turned serious.

“Stay because I love you.”

Martha stopped breathing.

Ethan looked terrified now.

The man who faced Blackridge without blinking.

Terrified.

“I don’t expect anything,” he continued. “I just can’t let you walk out believing there isn’t a reason to remain.”

Martha stepped toward him.

“There’s a problem.”

His face fell slightly.

“What?”

“You waited too long.”

“What does that mean?”

She reached up and touched his beard.

“It means I fell in love with you three chapters ago.”

Ethan frowned.

“Three what?”

Martha laughed.

“Never mind.”

Then she kissed him.

Upstairs Ruth opened one eye.

Smiled.

May you like

And went back to sleep.
