Chapter 11 - When Tommy Chose a Side

Victor made one mistake.

He trusted Tommy Russo.

Not completely.

Victor trusted no one completely.

But he trusted Tommy enough.

That was all Sadie needed.

They left Lombardi’s in two vehicles.

Victor insisted Roman ride with him.

Sadie and Evelyn rode in the second car.

Tommy drove.

One of Victor’s men sat beside him.

Sadie looked through the windshield.

Tommy’s eyes met hers briefly in the rearview mirror.

No expression.

No signal.

Yet she remembered something from earlier.

Tommy had been with Roman since they were teenagers.

He had watched Victor raise him.

He had watched Roman become feared.

He had watched Nora disappear.

And when Roman began investigating Victor, Tommy chose Roman.

Tonight he would have to choose again.

The convoy moved downtown.

Evelyn’s hands were no longer bound.

Victor no longer considered her a flight risk.

Sadie leaned toward her.

“You okay?”

Evelyn nodded.

“Terrified.”

“Me too.”

“Your mother would be furious.”

“At me?”

“At all of us.”

Sadie smiled faintly.

“That sounds like her.”

The car descended into an underground parking structure.

Tommy stopped.

Victor’s man said, “Phones.”

Sadie handed hers over.

Then they walked.

A service tunnel led toward an abandoned subway platform sealed from public use decades earlier.

Victor waited there.

Roman beside him.

Roman looked at Sadie.

She nodded once.

Fine.

Victor noticed.

“You two always did communicate too much without speaking.”

Roman said, “Jealous?”

Victor smiled.

“Perhaps.”

They walked along the dark platform.

At the far end stood an old maintenance door.

Victor inserted the first key.

Evelyn held the second.

She looked at Sadie.

Victor said, “Do it.”

Evelyn inserted hers.

Sadie approached.

The final lock waited.

Roman watched.

Sadie touched the silver key.

Then stopped.

Victor’s expression tightened.

“Nora.”

“What?”

“Open it.”

“No.”

Roman looked at her.

Victor smiled thinly.

“You did not come this far to become brave now.”

“I came this far to understand.”

She looked at him.

“You said Northstar is insurance.”

“Yes.”

“Anthony said it was evidence.”

“He was sentimental.”

“If you already have two keys, why didn’t you force my mother to give you hers?”

Victor’s face changed.

Sadie saw it.

“You couldn’t find it.”

He said nothing.

“She hid it with me because you would never think a sixteen-year-old girl mattered.”

Victor stared.

Sadie continued.

“And when Daniel discovered that years later, you killed him.”

“Nora.”

“You keep underestimating people who don’t frighten you.”

Victor stepped closer.

Roman moved.

Victor raised one hand.

His men immediately drew weapons.

Roman stopped.

Victor’s voice hardened.

“Open the door.”

Sadie looked toward Tommy.

His expression remained blank.

Then he coughed twice.

A signal?

She remembered the ride from Maine.

Tommy had coughed twice before warning Roman about a surveillance camera.

Sadie’s pulse accelerated.

She inserted the key.

The lock turned.

The door opened.

Beyond it stood a narrow room.

No gold.

No cash.

No weapons.

Just shelves.

Boxes.

Old servers.

Paper files.

Anthony Vale’s final insurance policy.

Victor stepped inside.

For the first time all night, his composure cracked.

Relief.

Twenty-two years.

He had finally reached it.

Roman followed.

Sadie entered with Evelyn.

Victor opened a box.

Photographs.

Bank records.

Recorded conversations.

He smiled.

“Do you understand what this is?”

Roman said, “Your grave.”

Victor laughed.

“No.”

He lifted a folder.

“This owns judges.”

Another.

“Senators.”

Another.

“Police commissioners.”

He looked at Roman.

“This is power.”

Roman’s expression remained calm.

“No.”

Victor frowned.

Roman said, “It’s fear.”

Sadie’s heart moved.

Anthony’s words.

If Roman learns the difference between power and fear.

Victor stared at him.

“Your father said things like that near the end.”

“And you killed him.”

“I saved what he built.”

“You never understood what he built.”

Roman looked around.

“He was trying to end you.”

Victor’s face hardened.

“He was weak.”

“No.”

Roman stepped closer.

“He was late.”

The words landed.

Victor raised the remote from Lombardi’s.

Roman stopped.

“Still think I’m bluffing?”

Sadie watched Victor’s thumb.

Tommy entered the room behind them.

Victor said, “Close the door.”

Tommy did.

Then locked it.

Victor smiled.

“Good.”

Tommy drew his weapon.

But he pointed it at Victor.

Silence.

Victor slowly turned.

“Thomas.”

Tommy’s hand remained steady.

“Put the remote down.”

Victor looked genuinely hurt.

“I knew your father.”

“So did Roman.”

“I gave you everything.”

“No.”

Tommy glanced toward Roman.

“You taught us fear.”

Victor’s jaw tightened.

One of his men reached for a weapon.

Tommy fired into the ceiling.

Everyone froze.

“No one moves.”

Sadie’s ears rang.

Victor stared at Tommy.

“You would betray me for him?”

Tommy shook his head.

“No.”

Then he looked at Sadie.

“For them.”

Victor laughed bitterly.

“How touching.”

Sirens became audible above the tunnels.

Victor’s expression changed.

“How?”

Tommy smiled.

“Your man searched Nora’s phone.”

“Yes.”

“He didn’t search my watch.”

Victor looked at Tommy’s wrist.

Tracking beacon.

Tommy had activated it before leaving Lombardi’s.

Federal agents were coming.

Victor lunged.

Not toward Tommy.

Toward the control panel beside the servers.

Roman intercepted him.

The two men crashed into a shelf.

Files fell.

Sadie pulled Evelyn backward.

Tommy restrained Victor’s men.

Roman and Victor struggled.

Victor was older.

Roman stronger.

But Victor fought desperately.

He reached for the remote.

Sadie saw it slide across the floor.

Toward her.

She grabbed it.

Victor stopped.

“Nora.”

Sadie looked at the device.

One button.

“Give it to me.”

“No.”

“You don’t understand what it controls.”

“Then explain.”

Victor glanced toward Roman.

Then smiled.

“It doesn’t control buildings.”

Sadie’s stomach tightened.

“What?”

“It controls the archive.”

Roman looked around.

“Failsafe.”

Victor nodded.

“One button wipes every digital record and ignites the paper vault.”

Evelyn went pale.

Sadie stared at the remote.

Twenty-two years of evidence.

Victor’s crimes.

Daniel’s work.

Anthony’s death.

All of it could disappear.

Victor held out his hand.

“You press that accidentally and your brother died for nothing.”

Sadie’s fingers tightened.

Federal agents pounded at the outer door.

Victor smiled.

“Give it to me.”

Sadie looked at Roman.

For years she believed power meant having the ability to destroy something.

Roman had believed the same.

Victor still did.

Sadie lowered the remote.

Then handed it to Evelyn.

Victor frowned.

Evelyn smiled.

“Anthony changed the failsafe before he died.”

Victor’s face went blank.

“What?”

Evelyn turned the device over.

“The red button doesn’t destroy Northstar.”

She pressed it.

Every server in the room came alive.

Lights blinked.

Victor stared.

Evelyn looked at him.

“It uploads it.”

Roman almost laughed.

Victor lunged.

Too late.

Across multiple monitors, progress bars appeared.

UPLOAD 12%.

26%.

41%.

Victor screamed for the first time.

“STOP IT!”

Roman stood in his path.

“No.”

Victor struck him.

Roman barely moved.

Upload 63%.

Victor looked toward Tommy.

“Shoot him!”

Tommy lowered his weapon.

“No.”

78%.

Victor turned toward Sadie.

“You don’t know what you’re releasing.”

Sadie stared back.

“I know exactly what I’m releasing.”

89%.

The door burst open.

Federal agents flooded the room.

Sloan entered.

“Everybody down!”

Victor remained standing.

95%.

He stared at Roman.

“You think this makes you free?”

Roman shook his head.

“No.”

100%.

UPLOAD COMPLETE.

Roman looked toward Sadie.

“It makes me accountable.”

Agents handcuffed Victor.

For the first time in twenty-two years, Victor Hale no longer controlled the room.

Yet as Sloan examined the uploaded files, her expression changed.

“Roman.”

He looked toward her.

“What?”

She held up a document.

“This archive contains evidence against you too.”

Sadie felt the victory turn complicated.

Roman nodded once.

“I know.”

Sloan stepped closer.

“I have to take you in.”

Roman looked at Sadie.

There was fear in his eyes.

But no resistance.

He held out his hands.

Sadie’s throat tightened.

Roman Vale had finally helped destroy the man who created him.

Now he would have to face what he himself had become.

May you like

And this time, Nora could not save him.
