Chapter 15 - The Man Behind the Betrayal

Mercer Street was evacuated at 7:12 p.m.
Police blocked both ends.
Fire engines waited nearby.
Residents stood beneath blankets in neighboring buildings.
Mrs. Donnelly complained loudly about being removed from her apartment.
Harper found her immediately.
“You're okay?”
“I was until some twenty-year-old policeman tried carrying me downstairs.”
“He was helping.”
“I have legs.”
Harper hugged her.
Mrs. Donnelly softened.
“Don't do that. People will think I have feelings.”
Harper laughed despite everything.
Then she looked toward her building.
Apartment 3B was dark.
Anthony was inside.
Alone, according to thermal surveillance.
Why?
Nobody knew.
Luca stood beside the police commander and federal agents.
The legal lines surrounding his life had changed quickly.
Days ago, Luca's men would have handled Anthony privately.
Tonight, official authorities controlled the street.
Harper noticed Luca repeatedly looking toward the building.
“What?”
He lowered his voice.
“Anthony asked for me.”
“Of course he did.”
“He says he'll surrender if I enter alone.”
“No.”
Luca almost smiled.
“Interesting.”
“What?”
“Apparently you can say it.”
“I'm not pretending to be reasonable.”
“He's unstable.”
“Exactly.”
Elena Park approached.
“We won't authorize it.”
Luca nodded.
“Good.”
Harper stared.
“You're not going?”
“No.”
She blinked.
“I expected an argument.”
“I’m trying something new.”
“What?”
“Not being an idiot.”
“I'm proud of you.”
Then Anthony called Harper.
Her phone vibrated.
Unknown number.
She answered before anyone stopped her.
“Hello?”
“Harper.”
Anthony's voice.
Luca immediately moved closer.
“What do you want?”
“You.”
“No.”
“Not inside.”
Harper frowned.
“What?”
“Look at the third-floor window.”
She did.
A small light appeared.
Anthony stood behind the glass.
“Your mother lived here once.”
Harper froze.
“No.”
“Before you.”
“How do you know?”
“I put her here.”
Harper looked at Luca.
Anthony continued.
“Apartment 3B belonged to a friend of mine thirty years ago.”
Harper's skin prickled.
“This wasn't random.”
“Your current apartment?”
“Yes.”
“How?”
“Your mother chose it intentionally.”
Harper shook her head.
“She moved there when I was in college.”
“She remembered the building.”
“Why?”
“Because that's where she hid Antonio Moretti.”
The world seemed to stop.
Harper looked toward Luca.
He heard through the speaker.
Anthony laughed softly.
“History has a sense of humor.”
Luca whispered, “My father was in 3B?”
“Before renovations. Before Harper was born.”
Anthony continued.
“Katherine brought Antonio there after Thomas had him attacked.”
Harper frowned.
“You said Thomas and Antonio became allies.”
“Eventually.”
“Why are you telling me this?”
“Because everyone wants to make Katherine a saint and me a monster.”
“Aren't you?”
Silence.
Then Anthony said, “I loved her.”
Harper closed her eyes.
Of course.
Another secret.
“Did she love you?”
“Once.”
Thomas, standing nearby, heard.
His face went hard.
Anthony continued.
“Katherine chose Thomas. Then she left him. Antonio protected her. Everyone got something from her except me.”
Harper's disgust grew.
“She wasn't something to possess.”
“You sound like her.”
“Good.”
Anthony's voice sharpened.
“She took everything.”
“No. You lost everything yourself.”
Silence.
Harper continued.
“You betrayed your friends. Manipulated families. Threatened people. Burned a store. Helped arrange an ambush.”
“You know nothing.”
“I know enough.”
“Then come inside.”
“No.”
“Afraid?”
“Yes.”
The answer surprised him.
Harper continued.
“I'm terrified. But fear doesn't mean I owe you anything.”
Luca looked at her.
Pride in his eyes.
Anthony became quiet.
Then he said, “The building burns in five minutes.”
The call ended.
Police moved immediately.
Fire teams prepared.
Luca grabbed Harper's arm.
“We move back.”
She did.
No argument.
A negotiator called Anthony.
No answer.
Two minutes.
Three.
Then a third-floor window opened.
Anthony appeared.
Empty hands.
He shouted something.
Police ordered him to show his hands.
He did.
For several seconds, it seemed he might surrender.
Then a second figure appeared behind him.
Marcus.
Harper gasped.
Marcus was holding a weapon.
Against Anthony.
Everything changed.
Luca stared.
“What the hell?”
Marcus forced Anthony away from the window.
The call came again.
This time Marcus spoke.
“Moretti.”
Luca answered.
“What do you want?”
“What everyone wants.”
“Money?”
“Freedom.”
“You picked a strange way to ask.”
Marcus laughed.
“Anthony has twelve million accessible tonight.”
Harper understood.
Marcus had been playing everyone.
Not mastermind.
Opportunist.
He had helped Anthony.
Helped Robert.
Then realized he could take the remaining money himself.
Anthony wasn't burning the building.
Marcus was.
“Release him,” Luca said.
“Why?”
“You hate him.”
“I do.”
“Then why care?”
Luca looked toward the window.
“Because I'm done watching people settle old debts with bodies.”
Harper heard it.
The final break from the man he'd been.
Marcus demanded a vehicle.
Police refused.
Negotiations continued.
Then smoke appeared.
Third floor.
“Fire!” someone shouted.
Marcus had started it anyway.
Firefighters moved.
A window shattered.
Anthony climbed halfway out.
Smoke poured behind him.
Marcus appeared again.
Then disappeared.
Luca moved instinctively.
Harper caught him.
“No.”
“He'll fall.”
“Firefighters.”
A ladder rose.
Anthony climbed out.
Seconds later, officers took him into custody.
Marcus remained inside.
Fire spread upward.
Then a figure emerged through the ground-floor entrance.
Marcus.
He ran into the alley.
Police pursued.
Vincent watched the perimeter.
“He's heading east!”
Marcus vaulted a fence.
Then suddenly stopped.
Thomas Rourke stood on the opposite side.
Harper's father hadn't followed instructions.
Again.
Marcus raised his weapon.
Thomas didn't.
He simply stepped aside.
Police rounded the corner behind him.
Marcus realized he was trapped.
For one terrible second, Harper thought he would fire.
Instead his weapon fell.
Hands rose.
The chase ended without another shot.
Firefighters contained the blaze.
Apartment 3B was damaged.
Again.
Harper stood across the street watching smoke rise.
Luca came beside her.
“I'm sorry.”
“For what?”
“Your home.”
She looked at the building.
“It stopped feeling like home about a week ago.”
“Where does home feel like now?”
Harper looked at him.
The question carried more meaning than either pretended.
“I don't know yet.”
Luca nodded.
Behind them, Anthony was placed into a federal vehicle.
Before entering, he looked toward Harper.
Not angry.
Defeated.
Harper felt no satisfaction.
Only sadness for everything people had destroyed because they confused love with possession and fear with respect.
Thomas approached.
“Harper.”
She looked at him.
“You ignored instructions.”
“Yes.”
“Apparently I inherited that.”
Luca said, “Definitely.”
Harper gave him a look.
Then Thomas smiled.
For the first time, Harper saw something of herself in him.
It unsettled her.
But didn't frighten her.
Maybe people could inherit pieces of their parents without becoming their parents.
Sirens reflected across the wet street.
Anthony arrested.
Marcus captured.
Robert charged.
The ledger secured.
The conspiracy was over.
But Luca's phone rang.
His lawyer.
Luca listened.
Harper watched.
His expression became serious.
“What is it?”
He lowered the phone.
“The federal review.”
“And?”
“They're offering an agreement.”
“What kind?”
Luca looked toward the Moretti vehicles.
His businesses.
His organization.
The empire he'd spent his adult life building.
“They want everything.”
Harper understood.
Not money.
Cooperation.
Names.
Structures.
Operations.
A complete dismantling.
“What happens if you agree?”
“I walk away from this life permanently.”
“And if you don't?”
“Years of investigations. Possible charges.”
Harper waited.
Luca looked toward the burning remains of the apartment where his father once survived because Katherine Hayes refused to leave him outside.
Then he looked at Harper.
“I think my father has been trying to tell me what to do for thirty years.”
May you like
And this time, Luca Moretti finally seemed ready to listen.
