Chapter 13 - The Boardroom War

Monday morning arrived with cameras outside Hayes Development headquarters.

Reporters shouted questions as Daniel stepped from the car.

"Mr. Hayes! Did your company conceal charitable fraud?"

"Is your uncle under investigation?"

"Who is Maya Carter?"

"Is the woman living with you?"

Daniel kept walking.

Maya watched from another vehicle.

She hated being there.

But she had agreed to testify privately to the board about the threatening messages and Noah's recovery.

Claire sat beside her.

An unlikely alliance.

"You can still leave," Claire said.

Maya looked at her.

"You'd like that?"

Claire sighed.

"I owe you an apology."

Maya waited.

"I judged you."

"Quickly."

"Very."

"Also loudly."

Claire almost smiled.

"Yes."

Maya looked out the window.

"Why?"

Claire answered after a moment.

"Because you frightened me."

Maya laughed.

"Me?"

"You appeared and Daniel started listening to things he'd ignored for years."

"That's not frightening."

"It is when you've spent eleven years managing his life."

Maya turned.

Claire's honesty surprised her.

"I thought you were chaos."

"Still might be."

"Maybe he needed some."

They entered through the underground garage.

The boardroom occupied the forty-second floor.

Richard Vale sat at the far end.

He hadn't fled.

He wore a gray suit and smiled when Daniel entered.

Police hadn't arrested him.

Yet.

The attempted attack involving the SUV was difficult to prove because the vehicle had been stolen.

Victor's shooting investigation hadn't produced enough direct evidence.

Richard's fingerprints at the mansion established trespassing at most; his attorneys claimed he had longtime family access.

He knew exactly how to stay one step behind criminal charges.

Daniel placed the red ledger on the table.

Richard's smile disappeared.

"Where did you find that?"

Daniel sat.

"Good morning to you too."

Board members exchanged uneasy looks.

Richard leaned back.

The meeting began.

His strategy was simple.

He argued Daniel had concealed major financial irregularities.

That Daniel's judgment had deteriorated after Elena's death.

That his son had recently wandered from an inadequately secured estate.

That Daniel had then allowed an unknown homeless woman into his residence and business affairs.

Maya listened through the adjoining conference room.

Her face burned.

Claire whispered, "Don't react."

"I'm not."

"You're grinding your teeth."

Maya stopped.

Inside, Richard continued.

"This isn't personal."

Daniel almost laughed.

"It's entirely personal."

Richard shook his head.

"We are responsible for thousands of employees."

"And eleven million dollars?"

Board members shifted.

Richard's face stayed calm.

Daniel opened the ledger.

"My father documented every early investment into this company."

Richard's jaw tightened.

"Thomas kept informal notes."

"He recorded repayment of your initial contribution in full."

"Not legally binding."

"No."

Daniel nodded.

"But the bank records on Elena's flash drive are."

Richard's face changed.

Daniel continued.

"You moved company money because you've spent twenty years telling yourself my father cheated you."

"Careful."

"You used my mother's dormant account."

"Prove it."

"Federal investigators are doing that."

Richard smiled.

"Investigations take time."

Daniel looked around the boardroom.

"Then let's talk about judgment."

He removed another document.

"Community Bridge Foundation lost eight hundred thousand dollars while I wasn't paying attention."

Maya heard several people gasp.

Daniel continued.

"That's on me."

Richard looked surprised.

Daniel wasn't defending himself.

He was confessing.

"I let grief become an excuse to disengage from anything Elena touched because remembering her hurt."

Daniel's voice remained steady.

"That failure created space for people like Victor to steal and people like Richard to hide larger crimes."

A board member asked, "Are you admitting negligence?"

"Yes."

Richard smiled.

Daniel continued.

"And I'm fixing it."

Richard's smile vanished.

"We recovered the stolen foundation funds through insurance and emergency reserves this weekend. I've personally reimbursed every dollar not covered."

"You can't buy your way out of negligence," Richard said.

"No."

Daniel looked through the glass wall toward Maya.

"But I can stop hiding from it."

Maya felt something in her chest tighten.

Daniel turned back.

"I am also appointing an independent forensic accounting team with no prior relationship to Hayes Development."

Richard said, "You don't have unilateral authority."

"Correct."

Daniel slid resignation papers onto the table.

"If the board refuses, I resign today."

Silence.

Richard hadn't expected that.

Neither had Maya.

Daniel continued.

"You wanted my title badly enough to destroy my wife's foundation and manipulate my family."

Richard's face reddened.

"Watch yourself."

"So take it."

Daniel pushed the papers forward.

"But you won't take the truth with it."

The room erupted.

Board members whispered.

Attorneys leaned together.

Richard stood.

"You dramatic, ungrateful child."

Daniel remained seated.

There it was.

The mask cracked.

Richard continued.

"I saved this company when your father nearly lost it."

"Then you were repaid."

"I made Hayes Development possible!"

"And you've spent years stealing payment for a debt that exists only in your head."

Richard slammed his hand on the table.

"Your father promised me half!"

Daniel lifted the red ledger.

"His signed agreement says twelve percent, repaid with interest."

Richard stopped.

Everyone heard the admission.

Daniel's general counsel quietly checked the room's recording system.

Still running.

Richard realized.

His face drained.

He turned toward the door.

Two federal agents entered.

Victor had regained consciousness that morning.

And he had agreed to cooperate.

Richard Vale was arrested in the hallway.

Cameras captured everything.

But victory didn't feel like victory.

Daniel returned home exhausted.

Noah ran to him.

"Did you win?"

Daniel loosened his tie.

"I don't know."

"Did the bad guy lose?"

Maya, standing nearby, raised an eyebrow.

Daniel smiled faintly.

"Life's more complicated than that."

Noah considered.

"Did Uncle Richard get arrested?"

"Yes."

"Then he lost."

Maya laughed.

Daniel did too.

Margaret entered.

Her face carried sadness despite the relief.

"He was my brother."

Daniel hugged her.

Margaret held him tightly.

For a moment she wasn't the elegant matriarch.

She was a woman grieving someone still alive.

That evening Maya prepared to return to the transitional residence.

Noah didn't protest.

Progress.

Daniel walked her outside.

"You didn't have to come today."

"I know."

"Thank you."

Maya smiled.

"Stop thanking me every forty minutes."

"Working on it."

She started walking toward the waiting car.

Daniel said, "Maya."

She turned.

"I want to ask something."

"What?"

"The job."

She groaned.

He raised both hands.

"Different question."

"Go."

"Will you meet the foundation staff tomorrow?"

She stared.

"No commitment."

"Why?"

"Because I reopened Elena's plans."

Daniel stepped closer.

"She wanted community kitchens connected to employment services."

Maya remembered the letter.

Her own old dream.

"If I meet them, it's because the work matters."

"Agreed."

"Not because Noah likes me."

"Agreed."

"Not because you feel guilty."

Daniel hesitated.

Maya pointed.

"Too long."

He smiled.

"Mostly agreed."

"Daniel."

"Fine. Agreed."

She opened the car door.

He said softly, "And not because of whatever this is."

Maya stopped.

"What is this?"

Daniel held her gaze.

"I don't know yet."

Maya's pulse quickened.

"Then maybe don't name it."

"Okay."

"But don't pretend it isn't there either."

Daniel smiled.

"Okay."

She left.

The next morning Maya entered Community Bridge Foundation as a job applicant.

Not a homeless woman being rescued.

Not Noah's miracle.

Not Daniel's responsibility.

She spent three hours speaking with staff.

At noon the director offered her the community liaison position.

Maya stared at the contract.

The salary was reasonable.

Not extravagant.

The responsibilities were real.

She asked for two days to decide.

Then her phone rang.

The transitional residence.

Her belongings had been searched while she was gone.

Nothing valuable was taken.

Only one item.

Noah's drawing.

PLEASE COME BACK.

And on her pillow, someone had left a new photograph.

It showed Richard Vale being arrested.

Across his face was written:

May you like

HE WASN'T THE ONLY ONE.
