Chapter 11 - The Secret Preston Never Expected Her to Find

Marlo called Elias before pride could interfere.

He answered on the first ring.

"Marlo?"

"They called."

Twenty minutes later, he was back.

She played the recorded threat.

Elias listened twice.

"You're not going."

"Obviously I'm going."

"No."

"They threatened Poppy."

"Which is exactly why you're not going."

"You don't get to decide."

"Neither does whoever called."

Marlo stepped closer.

"They want Dad's evidence."

"We'll give them something."

"What?"

"A copy."

"They'll know."

"Eventually."

A plan formed.

Not Elias's plan.

Not Marlo's.

Theirs.

Preston became part of it unexpectedly.

When he learned about the threat, he arrived furious.

"I'll take Poppy."

"No."

"Marlo—"

"No."

"She'll be safer at my house."

"Your lawyer created this."

"And I'm trying to fix it."

Marlo stared at him.

Then Poppy appeared upstairs.

"Dad?"

Preston looked up.

Something changed in his face.

He hadn't seen her since the bakery confrontation.

Poppy descended slowly.

"Are you still trying to take me?"

No adult in the room moved.

Preston swallowed.

"No."

"Why?"

"Because I was wrong."

Poppy considered that.

Children had a terrifying ability to strip adulthood of excuses.

"Are you sorry?"

"Yes."

"To Mom or me?"

Preston looked at Marlo.

"Both."

Poppy nodded.

"Okay."

Then she walked into the kitchen for juice.

Preston stared after her.

"That's it?"

Marlo almost smiled.

"She's seven."

"I spent twenty thousand dollars on lawyers and she just said okay."

"Don't mistake okay for forgiveness."

He nodded.

"I won't."

Later, Preston revealed something Graham hadn't expected him to remember.

Years earlier, Graham had once asked about Marlo's father's possessions.

At the time, Preston had assumed it was casual conversation.

Now it mattered.

"He asked whether Samuel left anything valuable."

"When?"

"Before our divorce."

Marlo felt sick.

Graham had been searching for the evidence long before the custody case.

The custody petition wasn't the beginning.

It was an opportunity.

Lena contacted investigators.

They agreed to monitor Pier Nine.

Midnight approached.

Marlo wore a wire.

Elias hated it.

"You don't have to do this."

"Yes, I do."

"No."

"My father spent eleven years waiting for somebody to finish what he started."

She looked at him.

"I'm finishing it."

At 11:57, Marlo walked alone toward the pier carrying a metal toolbox.

Fog rolled over the harbor.

Footsteps approached.

Graham Voss emerged.

No expensive suit.

No polished lawyer.

Just a frightened man in a dark coat.

"You should have given me the box years ago."

"I didn't know it existed."

"I know."

"Then why involve Poppy?"

"I needed pressure."

"She's seven."

"Nobody was going to hurt her."

"You asked whether delaying her surgery could kill her."

Graham flinched.

"That was contingency research."

Marlo stared.

"You made my daughter's life a contingency."

Graham held out his hand.

"The box."

"Why?"

"Because people far more dangerous than me want what's inside."

"Who?"

Graham looked toward the darkness.

Too late.

A gunshot cracked.

Graham fell.

Marlo screamed.

Elias appeared from behind a container and pulled her down.

Police flooded the pier.

Another shot.

Then silence.

Officers dragged a man from behind a parked truck.

Marlo recognized him from her father's photographs.

The third man beside Carlo and Graham.

Older now.

But unmistakable.

Halden Strategic's founder.

Graham was alive.

The bullet had struck his shoulder.

As paramedics worked, he looked at Marlo.

"They'll keep coming."

Marlo crouched beside him.

"No."

She looked toward the police carrying Samuel Hart's evidence.

"They won't."

For the first time in eleven years, the secret was no longer hidden in a toolbox.

It belonged to prosecutors.

Investigators.

Courts.

People who couldn't all be silenced.

But as Marlo looked across the pier, she saw Elias speaking to an officer.

Then he turned toward her.

His face carried no relief.

Only dread.

She walked over.

"What?"

Elias held out his phone.

It showed Poppy's latest hospital results.

Marlo didn't understand.

"What is this?"

Elias's voice was quiet.

"The hospital called."

Her heart stopped.

"Poppy's surgery can't wait three weeks anymore."

"How long?"

May you like

He looked at her.

"Tomorrow."
