Chapter 5 - The Family Dinner Nobody Finished

Margaret insisted everyone come.

Nobody wanted to.

That was precisely why she insisted.

The Whitmore townhouse on East Seventy-Third Street had been in the family for nearly ninety years.

Claire hated it immediately.

Not because it was ugly.

Because it was beautiful.

Museum beautiful.

Every object seemed to have a pedigree.

Every painting seemed to know how much it cost.

Claire arrived wearing jeans.

Adrian looked at them when she entered.

“What?”

“Nothing.”

“You looked.”

“I observed.”

“You people need a less creepy word for staring.”

He almost smiled.

Margaret sat at the head of the dining table.

Richard sat at the opposite end.

Two other family members were present.

Victoria Whitmore, Richard's daughter.

Forty-three.

Perfect posture.

Perfect blond hair.

Perfect expression of someone already irritated by Claire's existence.

Beside her sat Thomas Whitmore, a distant cousin and family attorney.

Claire had met lawyers before.

Thomas looked like he had been born wearing cufflinks.

Margaret didn't waste time.

“Claire is Lila.”

Victoria set down her wine.

“We don't know that.”

“The preliminary DNA result came this morning,” Adrian said.

Claire looked at him.

“You didn't tell me.”

“I received it twenty minutes ago.”

“And?”

He looked directly at her.

“Margaret is your maternal grandmother.”

Claire felt the room shift.

She had expected it.

That didn't matter.

Expectation and reality were different animals.

Margaret began crying.

Claire didn't.

She looked at the table.

At the silverware.

At the untouched food.

At Richard.

He seemed smaller than he had in the restaurant.

Victoria spoke first.

“So what happens now?”

Claire looked at her.

“What do you mean?”

“Legally.”

Adrian's expression cooled.

“Victoria.”

“What? We should pretend nobody is thinking it?”

Claire leaned back.

“Thinking what?”

Victoria looked at her.

“You are Evelyn's daughter.”

“Apparently.”

“That affects the trust.”

There it was.

Not mother.

Not lost child.

Trust.

Money.

Claire laughed.

“Good to know we've reached the important part.”

Margaret slapped the table.

“Enough.”

Victoria didn't flinch.

“We need clarity.”

Claire stood.

“You can have all the clarity you want.”

She looked at Margaret.

“I didn't come here for money.”

“I know.”

“I'm serious.”

“I know.”

Claire looked at Victoria.

“I don't want your house. Your company. Your trust. Whatever else you're protecting.”

Victoria's expression softened slightly.

“I'm protecting my children.”

“From me?”

“From chaos.”

Claire stared.

“You mean from losing money.”

“I mean from a stranger appearing after twenty-eight years.”

Adrian spoke.

“She didn't appear.”

Everyone looked at him.

“We found her.”

Victoria rolled her eyes.

“Wonderful distinction.”

“It matters.”

“Why?”

“Because Claire didn't ask for any of this.”

Victoria looked at him.

“And you believe everything she says?”

“Yes.”

The room went quiet.

Claire looked at Adrian.

He hadn't hesitated.

Victoria noticed too.

Something changed in her face.

Interesting.

Richard finally spoke.

“Everyone is missing the point.”

Margaret looked at him.

“You don't get to decide the point.”

Richard ignored her.

He looked at Claire.

“Your mother lied to you for thirty years.”

Claire stiffened.

“Don't.”

“Rebecca stole you.”

“She saved me.”

“Then kept you.”

“She thought you were dangerous.”

Richard laughed softly.

“Convenient.”

Adrian leaned forward.

“Explain the clinic.”

Richard's face hardened.

“What about it?”

“You controlled Black Harbor.”

“Through a holding company.”

“Why was Evelyn there?”

“She was unstable.”

Margaret rose.

“My daughter was grieving!”

“She threatened people.”

“Who?”

“Me.”

Claire stared.

Richard continued.

“She accused me of kidnapping her child. She accused Daniel of conspiracy. She claimed Michael had been murdered.”

“Was he?”

Richard looked at her.

“No.”

Claire took out Daniel's letter.

“Daniel thought differently.”

Richard saw it.

The color left his face.

“Where did you get that?”

“Evelyn kept it.”

Richard stood.

“Give me that.”

Adrian rose too.

“No.”

“That's family property.”

Claire laughed.

“Which family?”

Richard stopped.

Good.

Claire unfolded the letter.

“Daniel wrote that Michael discovered payments to private investigators.”

Richard's mouth tightened.

“Daniel was a drunk.”

Margaret closed her eyes.

Adrian's face went still.

Claire noticed.

“Was he?”

Richard looked at Adrian.

“Your father destroyed himself with guilt.”

Adrian's voice was quiet.

“Be very careful.”

Richard stared at him.

“He let Evelyn disappear.”

“So did you.”

“I kept this family alive.”

Margaret slapped him.

The sound cracked through the dining room.

Everyone froze.

Richard touched his cheek.

Margaret's hand shook.

“You kept a company alive.”

Her voice broke.

“You destroyed my children.”

Richard stared at her.

“You don't know what happened.”

“Then tell me.”

He sat.

For a moment Claire thought he wouldn't.

Then he looked at her.

“Michael wasn't murdered.”

Claire waited.

“He was paid.”

The words landed strangely.

“Paid for what?”

“To leave.”

Margaret whispered, “No.”

Richard continued.

“My father hated him.”

“Because he married Evelyn?”

“Because Michael wanted Evelyn to sell her shares and walk away.”

Claire looked at Adrian.

He was listening carefully.

Richard said, “Michael discovered the surveillance. He confronted me.”

“And?”

“I offered him money.”

“To disappear.”

“Yes.”

“Did Evelyn know?”

“No.”

Claire felt sick.

“How much?”

“Three million.”

In 1995.

Enough to buy a new identity.

A new life.

Claire's voice turned cold.

“He left his wife and baby.”

Richard looked away.

“Yes.”

Margaret covered her face.

Claire hated Michael instantly.

Then Richard added something.

“He came back.”

Claire stopped.

“When?”

“Six months later.”

Adrian leaned forward.

“Where?”

Richard looked at him.

“New York.”

“What happened?”

“He wanted Evelyn.”

“Where was she?”

“Black Harbor.”

“And you told him?”

“No.”

Claire stared.

“Why?”

“Because by then she believed he was dead.”

“You let her believe that.”

“Yes.”

Margaret whispered, “You monster.”

Richard snapped.

“You think I don't know?”

His voice cracked.

For the first time, Claire saw something other than arrogance.

Shame.

“He threatened to expose everything.”

Adrian's eyes narrowed.

“So you paid him again.”

Richard shook his head.

“No.”

“Then what?”

“He left.”

“Where?”

“I don't know.”

Claire groaned.

Richard slammed his hand against the table.

“I don't!”

Silence.

Then the house phone rang.

Nobody moved.

A staff member answered in the hallway.

A moment later she entered.

“Mr. Whitmore?”

Everyone looked at Adrian.

“There is a gentleman downstairs asking for Claire Bennett.”

Claire frowned.

“Who?”

“He says his name is Michael Grant.”

The dining room became perfectly still.

Margaret's wineglass slipped from her hand.

It hit the carpet.

Didn't break.

Claire heard Adrian whisper one word.

“Impossible.”

The man who entered five minutes later was seventy.

Maybe older.

He walked with a cane.

White hair.

Lean face.

Claire saw herself nowhere in him.

Then he looked at her.

His eyes filled.

“Lila.”

Claire's knees almost failed.

“You're Michael?”

“Yes.”

“My father?”

The man nodded.

She slapped him.

Hard.

Nobody stopped her.

Michael touched his cheek.

“I deserved that.”

Claire's voice trembled.

“You're alive.”

“Yes.”

“My mother thought you were dead.”

“I know.”

“You took money.”

His face crumpled.

“Yes.”

“You left her.”

“Yes.”

“You left me.”

“I was a coward.”

Claire almost hit him again.

Instead, she stepped back.

“Why are you here?”

Michael reached into his coat.

He removed a small recording device.

“Because Richard didn't tell you the whole story.”

Richard stood.

“Get out.”

Michael looked at him.

“You still afraid of the truth?”

Adrian moved between them.

“What recording?”

Michael set it on the table.

“Evelyn made it the night she disappeared.”

Margaret whispered, “You had this?”

“For years.”

“Why?”

Michael looked at Claire.

“Because it proves who took you.”

Claire's heart pounded.

Michael pressed play.

Static.

Then Evelyn's voice.

Young.

Terrified.

“If anything happens to me, Richard didn't take Lila.”

Everyone looked at Richard.

His face changed.

Evelyn continued.

“He helped cover it up.”

A pause.

Then:

May you like

“But Daniel is the one who gave them the key.”

Adrian went completely still.
