Chapter 11 - The House With No Address

Richard survived.
Barely.
Federal custody placed him beyond Damian's reach.
But before investigators could question him, Richard gave them one phrase:
“The house with no address.”
Damian knew nothing about it.
Clara did.
Their father had once taken her there as a child.
No road number.
No official property record.
A lakeside house hidden beneath another corporation.
They found it forty-eight hours later.
Beatrice went with Damian.
Neither discussed what he had said at the warehouse.
Everyone you love.
Bea had heard it.
Damian knew she had heard it.
Neither was ready to give the words a name.
Inside the house they found Vittorio's private archive.
Recordings.
Letters.
Documents.
And one final confession.
Vittorio appeared on an old screen.
“If Damian is watching this, then I failed.”
Damian sat.
Bea stood beside him.
Vittorio continued.
“Richard betrayed me, but he was not the architect. I was.”
Damian stared.
His father explained.
Years earlier, Vittorio had tried to create peace between the Costellos and Pendletons.
But members of his own organization opposed him.
Richard exploited that division.
Vittorio attempted to control the conspiracy rather than expose it.
That mistake allowed Richard to grow powerful.
“I thought I could manage evil by keeping it close,” Vittorio said. “Instead I fed it.”
Damian looked down.
The recording continued.
“Margaret Hayes showed me what courage looked like. She had no army. No fortune. Yet she risked everything to preserve the truth.”
Beatrice began crying silently.
“If her daughter ever becomes involved, protect her. Not because she belongs to us. Because she never should.”
Damian looked at Bea.
Vittorio's final words were for his son.
“Damian, do not inherit my mistakes simply because you inherited my name.”
The screen went black.
For several minutes, neither spoke.
Then Bea sat beside Damian.
“You're not him.”
“You don't know everything I've done.”
“No.”
She looked at him.
“But I've seen what you do when you have a choice.”
Damian turned toward her.
“And?”
“You protect people.”
“Not always.”
“You protected me.”
“That's different.”
“Why?”
He didn't answer.
Bea already knew.
Their faces moved closer.
Damian stopped.
“If I do this, your life becomes even more complicated.”
She smiled softly.
“Damian, I slept in a mafia boss's bed, discovered forty million dollars, learned my mother was an intelligence operative, got kidnapped, and watched two criminal families become allies.”
A faint smile touched his mouth.
“I think complicated already happened.”
He kissed her.
Slowly.
No urgency.
No danger.
For the first time, the world around them was quiet.
When they separated, Damian rested his forehead against hers.
“I should have done that differently.”
“How?”
“Earlier.”
She laughed.
Then his phone rang.
Clara.
Damian answered.
Her voice was panicked.
“Richard escaped.”
Damian stood.
“How?”
“I don't know.”
Then Clara said:
“And he took Leo.”
The brief moment of peace disappeared.
Richard had lost his empire.
His secrets.
His leverage.

Now he had only revenge.
And he had chosen a four-year-old boy to deliver it.
