Chapter 13 - The Mafia Boss Who Chose Not to Kill

Margot did not answer her phone.

Neither Mercer nor Victor knew where she was.

For the first time, Elias believed both men.

That made the situation worse.

Victor stood beside the curb while Miriam and Clara moved into Daniel’s vehicle.

Elias looked at him.

“You raised her?”

“For a while.”

“Why?”

“Evelyn Bell worked for me.”

“Worked?”

Victor smiled faintly.

“Not everything needs an ugly interpretation.”

“With you, it usually does.”

Victor accepted that.

“Evelyn and I were together before Mercer.”

Elias understood.

“You thought Margot was yours.”

“For six years.”

“And then?”

“Mercer proved otherwise.”

“Yet you stayed in her life.”

“I loved the child.”

The sentence was so simple Elias almost mistrusted it.

Victor looked toward the street.

“When Evelyn died, Mercer took control of Margot. He trained her to hate the Barons.”

“Then why did you recruit her?”

“I thought I could turn her.”

“And she turned you.”

“Yes.”

Elias stared.

Victor Hale admitting failure was rare.

“What does she want?”

“Everything.”

“Be specific.”

Victor sighed.

“Mercer’s political network. Your legitimate businesses. My remaining organization.”

Clara stepped closer.

“One woman can't control all that.”

Victor looked at her.

“Neither could her father. That's why she spent years making herself necessary to everyone.”

Elias thought about Margot.

She knew company structures.

Political donors.

Old council families.

Victor’s weaknesses.

Mercer’s secrets.

And Elias.

Especially Elias.

“She intended to marry me.”

“Yes.”

“Then inherit?”

“Eventually.”

Elias’s face hardened.

Victor continued.

“But your medical event created an opportunity. Mercer wanted you hospitalized. I wanted you weakened.”

Clara stared at him.

“You altered his medication.”

Victor did not deny it.

Elias felt Daniel shift behind him.

Old rules would have demanded blood.

His father's world had simple answers.

Betrayal required punishment.

Public betrayal required public punishment.

Victor had helped put Elias in a wheelchair and nearly caused his death.

For one dangerous second Elias imagined resolving everything the way Dominic might have.

Then he heard Clara’s voice from the dock the night before.

Maybe losing the empire is the first time you'll learn who stays when there’s nothing to gain.

Elias reached for his phone.

Victor watched.

“Who are you calling?”

“Federal investigators.”

Victor laughed.

“No.”

“Yes.”

“You won't.”

“Why?”

“Because you need me.”

“I did.”

Elias dialed.

Victor’s expression changed.

“Elias.”

“You tried to kill me.”

“I tried to control you.”

“I'm sure prosecutors will appreciate the distinction.”

Victor stepped closer.

Daniel moved between them.

Victor stopped.

“You hand me to them and your father’s entire history comes out.”

“Yes.”

“Your name is destroyed.”

“Probably.”

“Your company collapses.”

“Maybe.”

“You lose everything.”

Elias looked at him.

“I already did.”

Victor stared.

“And I'm still here.”

For the first time, Elias saw fear in Victor Hale.

Real fear.

Not of prison.

Of irrelevance.

Victor had built his entire life around power.

A man who refused to play by those rules had no use for him.

Federal agents arrived twenty-seven minutes later.

Victor did not run.

As they placed him in the vehicle, he turned toward Elias.

“You think this makes you better than us?”

“No.”

“Then what?”

Elias answered quietly.

“It makes me done.”

Victor laughed once.

“You'll never be done.”

Maybe he was right.

But Elias intended to try.

The recording was delivered to investigators.

Dominic’s voice filled a secure room.

He admitted financial crimes.

Bribery.

Conspiracy.

His dealings with Mercer.

His failure to act when Elena first warned him about Victor.

Then came the voice of Senator Mercer’s late wife, Anne.

She described hidden accounts.

Political favors.

Threats.

Years of manipulation.

Enough to destroy careers.

Enough to trigger multiple investigations.

Mercer resigned from three committees before sunset.

By night, journalists surrounded his Washington residence.

But Margot remained missing.

Then Michael called.

“She’s at the Baron headquarters.”

Elias frowned.

“What?”

“She entered with two attorneys and four private security people.”

“Why?”

“She claims she owns controlling interest.”

“That’s impossible.”

“No.”

Michael's voice shook.

“She has signed transfer documents.”

“From whom?”

“Victor.”

Elias went cold.

Victor had prepared one final betrayal.

“How much?”

“Enough, combined with Mercer-connected trusts, to control the board.”

Clara overheard.

“She took the company.”

Elias nodded.

Not permanently.

But tonight she had legal possession on paper.

Daniel asked, “What now?”

Elias looked at the city skyline.

“Now we learn why she wants it.”

Margot answered when he called this time.

“Hello, Elias.”

Her voice was calm.

Almost cheerful.

“You've been busy.”

“So have you.”

“Victor was arrested.”

“I heard.”

“Your father is next.”

“I know.”

“And you?”

A pause.

“What about me?”

“What do you want?”

Margot laughed softly.

“At last.”

“Answer.”

“I want what your father stole.”

“From Mercer?”

“No.”

She sounded almost amused.

“From my mother.”

Elias frowned.

“What did Dominic steal from Evelyn?”

“Her company.”

Elias looked at Daniel.

“What company?”

“Baron Consolidated.”

Silence.

Margot continued.

“Your father didn't build the legitimate empire, Elias.”

“That's a lie.”

“Ask Thomas.”

Elias looked toward Thomas, who had just entered the room.

The older man heard the name.

His face changed.

Margot whispered through the phone:

“Your father stole everything from my mother.”

Elias asked Thomas one question.

“Did he?”

Thomas sat down.

And Elias knew the answer before he spoke.

“Yes.”

Margot laughed quietly through the phone.

“So now you understand.”

Elias closed his eyes.

But Margot was not finished.

“I don't want your money.”

“What do you want?”

“I want you to publicly admit that the Baron legacy was built on theft.”

Elias stared.

“And if I do?”

“I give the company to its employees.”

That surprised everyone.

“And if I don't?”

Margot’s voice became cold.

“I destroy it.”

The line went dead.

For the first time Elias realized that perhaps Margot did not want to become queen of the Baron empire.

May you like

Perhaps she wanted to burn the throne.
