Chapter 4 - The Secret Inside the Mercer Trust

The flash drive contained 2,843 files.
Thomas's forensic accountant worked through the night.
By sunrise, they had found enough to understand why Grant was terrified.
Charles Mercer hadn't merely left Evelyn money.
He had left her control.
Years earlier, Charles had quietly invested in the distressed debt of several hospitality companies.
One of those companies eventually became Hartwell Hotels.
The discovery was almost absurd.
Before Evelyn ever met Grant, her father's investment entities had acquired portions of the debt attached to Grant's first hotel.
When Evelyn restructured Hartwell in 2017, those rights had been consolidated.
Through a chain of trusts and holding companies, Evelyn effectively controlled more of Hartwell's financial foundation than anyone realized.
Including Evelyn.
Including, apparently, Grant—until Daniel told him.
Thomas stared at the documents.
"Your father designed this to remain dormant unless certain conditions occurred."
"What conditions?"
"Fraud. Unauthorized asset transfers. Insolvency."
Evelyn understood immediately.
"December first."
Thomas nodded.
"If Hartwell defaults, the dormant rights activate."
"And Blackridge?"
"Daniel appears to be trying to acquire those rights before they activate."
Evelyn looked toward the window.
"So my brother came back from the dead to steal my inheritance."
"We don't know that."
But they soon would.
At 4:17 that afternoon, Daniel Mercer walked into the Beaumont Hotel.
Evelyn waited in a private conference room.
When the door opened, fourteen years disappeared.
Daniel looked older.
Of course he did.
But he still had the same eyes.
He stopped when he saw her.
"Evy."
Only Daniel had ever called her that.
Evelyn stood.
Then slapped him.
The sound cracked through the room.
Daniel didn't react.
She slapped him again.
Then she wrapped her arms around him.
For several seconds neither spoke.
Evelyn cried against her brother's shoulder.
Then she pushed him away.
"You let me bury you."
"I know."
"Mom died believing you were dead."
His face broke.
"I know."
"Don't say that like it makes anything better."
"It doesn't."
They sat.
Daniel told her everything.
Their father had made dangerous investments with dangerous people.
Daniel discovered it accidentally.
When he confronted Charles, threats followed.
Daniel staged his disappearance because he believed it would protect Evelyn and their mother.
"For fourteen years?"
"I couldn't come back."
"You could have called."
"I watched you."
Evelyn stared.
"That's supposed to comfort me?"
"No."
"Then why Blackridge?"
Daniel looked ashamed.
"I needed money."
"For what?"
"To buy the Mercer debt before someone else did."
"Someone else?"
Daniel leaned forward.
"Grant."
Evelyn went still.
Daniel explained that Grant had discovered the dormant rights three years earlier.
At first, Grant had approached Daniel claiming he wanted to protect Evelyn.
Then he proposed something else.
Move Hartwell money through Blackridge.
Use Blackridge to acquire the debt.
When the dormant provisions activated, Grant and Daniel would control the assets.
"And me?" Evelyn asked.
Daniel couldn't meet her eyes.
"You were supposed to sign documents."
"What documents?"
"A marital asset restructuring."
Evelyn remembered.
Six months earlier Grant had repeatedly asked her to sign an "estate planning update."
She had been too busy.
She never signed.
A strange laugh escaped her.
"My schedule saved me."
Daniel nodded.
"Grant started panicking."
"And Madison?"
"I don't know how much she knows."
Evelyn stood.
"Why warn me now?"
Daniel looked at his sister.
"Because Grant changed the plan."
"How?"
"He doesn't need your signature anymore."
Thomas leaned forward.
"Explain."
Daniel removed an envelope.
Inside was a document bearing Evelyn's signature.
Except Evelyn had never signed it.
Thomas examined it.
"Forgery."
Daniel nodded.
"Grant plans to file this before December first."
Evelyn felt something inside her harden.
The affair had broken her heart.
This was different.
This was deliberate.
Calculated.
Grant hadn't simply stopped loving her.
He had decided she was an obstacle.
That evening, Evelyn called a special meeting of Hartwell's board.
Grant arrived expecting a frightened wife.
Instead he found Evelyn seated at the head of the conference table.
Thomas sat beside her.
Daniel sat across from him.
Grant stopped in the doorway.
"You."
Daniel didn't move.
Grant looked at Evelyn.
"You don't understand what's happening."
"I understand enough."
Grant turned toward the board.
"This is a private family matter."
Evelyn slid copies of the transfers across the table.
"Thirty-two million dollars in corporate funds isn't private."
Grant's attorney whispered urgently to him.
Board members began reading.
Questions came quickly.
Grant answered none directly.
Finally Evelyn placed the forged document on the table.
Grant went pale.
"Where did you get that?"
Evelyn didn't answer.
She didn't need to.
Grant looked at Daniel.
"You gave it to her."
Daniel nodded.
"You were going to destroy my sister."
Grant laughed bitterly.
"You took the money too."
Daniel's face tightened.
"Yes."
The room went silent.
Evelyn looked at her brother.
"What?"
Daniel closed his eyes.
Grant smiled.
And Evelyn realized she still didn't know everything.
Grant leaned toward her.
"Ask your brother where the first twelve million went."
Daniel said nothing.
Grant's smile widened.
"Go ahead, Evelyn."
May you like
Then he delivered the sentence that changed everything again.
"Ask him why your father's death wasn't an accident."
