Chapter 14 - The Betrayal Inside the Mercer House

Adrian Reed called Dante at 3:12 the next morning.

No blocked number.

No disguise.

Just a call.

Dante answered immediately.

“Where are you?”

Reed sounded exhausted.

“You found Northstar.”

“Yes.”

“Then you know.”

“I know you poisoned my son.”

Silence.

“No.”

Dante’s face changed.

Nora stood beside him.

“You gave him the medication.”

“I gave him what Shaw told me were supplements.”

“Don’t lie.”

“I’m not asking forgiveness.”

Reed’s voice cracked.

“I’m telling you I didn’t know until three weeks ago what was actually inside them.”

Dante gripped the phone.

“And once you knew?”

“I tried to stop.”

“You kept giving them.”

“Because Shaw was watching.”

“That’s your defense?”

“No.”

Reed inhaled.

“It’s my shame.”

Nora watched Dante.

Anger.

Confusion.

Disgust.

All collided.

“Where are you?”

“Somewhere Shaw can’t easily reach.”

“Police.”

“No.”

“If you want me to believe anything—”

“I don’t care if you believe me.”

Reed’s voice sharpened.

“I care whether Eli survives.”

Dante went silent.

Reed continued.

“Shaw has someone inside your current security detail.”

Marco immediately looked around.

“Who?” Dante demanded.

“I don’t know.”

“Convenient.”

“He never gave me names unless necessary.”

“You worked with him for twelve years.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

There it was.

The question beneath everything.

Reed answered quietly.

“Because I wanted what you had.”

Dante’s expression hardened.

“Money?”

“Power.”

At least he did not pretend nobility.

Reed explained.

Edwin Shaw recruited him while he worked at Graham’s charity.

Shaw promised opportunity.

Mercer access.

Wealth.

Influence.

At first it was financial fraud.

Invisible transfers.

Altered manifests.

Then Sofia noticed.

Reed lied to her.

Shaw told him the problem would resolve because Sofia was ill.

“I told myself we were waiting her out.”

Dante’s face became murderous.

Nora touched his arm.

He stayed.

Reed continued.

“After she died, Shaw became obsessed with controlling Mercer Logistics.”

“Why?”

“The ports.”

“For Halcyon?”

“Yes.”

“What moves through them?”

“I don’t know everything.”

“Try.”

“Money. Contraband. Corporate intelligence. Sometimes people.”

Dante closed his eyes.

His legitimate company had been a doorway for criminals.

He had unknowingly provided the walls.

“Eli?” he asked.

Reed’s voice changed.

“That was never supposed to happen.”

“But it did.”

“Shaw wanted trust control.”

“And you administered the medication.”

“Yes.”

The confession hung in the room.

“I believed the doses were causing fatigue. Something that would make you postpone meetings and focus on your son.”

Dante nearly laughed from rage.

“You never checked?”

“Not soon enough.”

“When did you learn?”

“When Eli started hiding them. I had one tested.”

Nora felt sick.

“And you still made him take them,” Dante said.

“Twice.”

Reed’s voice broke.

“I was terrified.”

“Of Shaw?”

“Yes.”

“Then you’re a coward.”

“I know.”

Dante’s simplicity hurt more than shouting.

“What happened the night Eli ran?”

“I decided to tell you.”

“You expect me to believe that?”

“No.”

“Then why call?”

“Because Shaw knew.”

Reed explained that someone overheard him arranging a meeting with Dante.

Before he could act, Shaw ordered the final dose.

Reed refused.

Then Eli overheard part of the phone call.

He ran.

“Did you chase him?”

“Yes.”

“Did you call Teresa?”

“No.”

“Did you order the SUV?”

“No.”

“Who did?”

“Shaw.”

Dante’s eyes darkened.

“Victor’s vehicle.”

“Shaw manipulated Victor.”

“We know.”

A pause.

“Then Victor is alive?”

“Yes.”

Reed actually sounded relieved.

That surprised Nora.

Dante asked, “Did you put Eli near Callahan’s?”

“No.”

“Did you plant medication in Nora’s apartment?”

“No.”

“Transfer money to her?”

“Yes.”

Nora’s jaw tightened.

Reed continued quickly.

“Shaw ordered it. He already selected her.”

“Because of Sam.”

“Yes.”

Nora stepped closer.

“Put me on speaker.”

Dante did.

“Did you kill my brother?”

Reed went silent.

Nora’s voice shook.

“Answer me.”

“No.”

“Did you tamper with his medication?”

“No.”

“Did Mallory Crane?”

Another pause.

“Yes.”

Nora closed her eyes.

Dante moved beside her.

“Why?”

Reed answered.

“Sam noticed irregular deliveries.”

Her throat closed.

“Did she poison him?”

“I don’t know.”

“You expect me to believe that?”

“She changed one shipment. Shaw told her to scare him.”

“Scare him how?”

“Make him sick enough to discredit his complaints.”

Nora had to grip the table.

Dante took the phone.

“If Sam died because of that—”

“I know.”

“No, you don’t.”

Dante’s voice became ice.

“You don’t get to say you know.”

Reed remained silent.

Then:

“I have Shaw’s records.”

Everyone froze.

“Where?”

“With me.”

“Bring them to police.”

“I can’t.”

“You can.”

“He owns people.”

“Names.”

“I don’t know all of them.”

“Then start with one.”

Reed hesitated.

“Your security leak is someone with access to the apartment.”

Dante looked at Marco.

Only a handful of people qualified.

Reed continued.

“Shaw uses the phrase ‘blue morning’ when he activates someone.”

Marco frowned.

Then his face changed.

“What?”

Dante asked.

Marco pulled out his phone.

A message from one of the security supervisors.

Received twenty minutes earlier.

BLUE MORNING. SHIFT CHANGE AT 4.

Marco looked up.

“Daniel Kessler.”

Dante knew him.

Seven years of service.

Married.

Two daughters.

Trusted.

Again.

The apartment alarm sounded.

Marco swore.

“Eli.”

They ran.

Eli’s room was empty.

Window locked.

No struggle.

Security camera feed showed Daniel Kessler walking with Eli toward the service elevator.

Eli appeared calm.

Trusting.

Daniel had told him his father needed him downstairs.

The elevator was already below the parking garage.

Dante’s face emptied.

Reed remained on speaker.

“What happened?”

Dante could barely speak.

“They took him.”

Reed went silent.

Then he said the words that turned fear into terror.

“Shaw won’t try poison again.”

Dante grabbed the phone.

“Where would he go?”

“I don’t know.”

“You have ten seconds to become useful.”

Reed breathed.

“Warehouse Seventeen.”

Dante looked at Marco.

Reed continued.

“That’s where Shaw began everything with Sofia.”

And now, nearly six years later, the conspiracy was returning to the place where it started.
